Memories: George R. Stanton

SF West History, April–June 2015)
George R. Stanton, center, with friends and dogs after rabbit hunting in the Sunset sand dunes. Possibly Charlie Williams on left., circa 1917 -
On January 5, 1984, George Stanton wrote a letter of condolence to the widow of Harry Wallenberg. After sharing memories of her husband, Stanton told stories of his childhood in the sand dunes of the Sunset and Parkside Districts in the early twentieth century. Mr. Stanton had told similar tales to Mary Ada Williams for her book "Parkside Pranks and Sunset Stunts." Stanton, who was born in 1899, played minor league baseball before joining the San Francisco Police Department. He passed away in 1987. Our thanks to WNP member Bob Wallenberg for letting us share some excerpts from the letter.

A harrowing situation unfolded Monday in Eagan when a driver suffering from a medical emergency crashed into a pond near Lunds & Byerlys, with the vehicle quickly filling with water while the driver was unresponsive.
The SUV was locked and the windows were up when a bystander, police officers and firefighters arrived at the scene, with water levels inside the vehicle rising up to the driver's chest.
According to Eagan PD, the SUV was pointing nose down and floating, so to gain better footing the group of responders pushed the vehicle to more shallow water and then decided to break the windows.

EAGAN, Minn. — Bill Henk had just finished his lunch break Monday when he saw a peculiar and frightening sight unfold on Denmark Avenue near a busy commercial strip.
A driver had pulled into traffic, slammed on the gas, and plunged his car down a hill into a pond.
“All I could see was his car, the front end, sitting down in the pond,” said Henk, a City of Eagan code enforcement worker. “I knew he needed help. I was the only one there.”
