Dan Walters: Inflated job numbers prop up bullet train

Inflated job creation numbers help keep California's bullet train project alive despite lack of justification, columnist Dan Walters says.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California's high-speed rail project lost a top leader this week without a replacement on tap, injecting fresh uncertainty into a project constantly in flux.
Joe Hedges, the project's chief operating officer, left his job Monday, said rail spokesman Melissa Figueroa. She gave no details on his departure, saying the agency doesn't discuss personnel matters. Hedges couldn't be reached for comment.
His departure came the same day that rail board Chairman Tom Richards announced the conclusion of an investigation into personnel matters and allegations of fraud, though he said no fraud was found. The board formed a special committee in response to anonymous complaints about business practices and personnel, he said in brief remarks after the committee's closed meeting ended. The committee began meeting in February, according to meeting notices.

Dan Walters: Inflated job numbers prop up bullet train

Whenever politicians spend large sums of taxpayer money on pet projects, they invariably overstate their supposed economic benefits, particularly creating oodles of “good-paying jobs.”
They all do it, using a deceptive assumption that if one worker works one day on the project, it’s counted as a “job.”
Ralph Vartabedian, a reporter for the Los Angeles Times who — thank goodness — specializes in telling us what’s really happening, or not, in the state’s woebegone high-speed rail project, punctures its job creation myth in a recent article.
Vartabedian cites a banner on a bullet train viaduct in Fresno claiming “5,000 jobs and counting” but reveals that while consuming many billions of dollars, the project has employed only about 1,000 construction workers at any one time.

Business class opens to masses as a covid refuge

Business class was that silent and spacious sanctuary for the well-heeled, at least until the pandemic destroyed global aviation. But as flights creep back, this once-exclusive haven is being invaded, by the masses.
Flush with cash and a record number of air miles after a year on the ground, leisure travelers are splurging on premium seats for their first trips back. They're not just after the plated food, champagne and little cosmetics that typically come with the higher fares. Rather, they're trying to minimize the risk of catching covid in the cheek-to-cheek jostle of coach.
