they've been waiting 18 years to recover their daughter's body. and now they're able to bury her but her parents say that's not enough. amber lee is live where authorities have focused their search for additional victims of the two serial killers. >> reporter: 1,000 bones were unearth from this property. as investigators consider whether to dig up a second well we spoke to the parents of the first victim to be identified. in the small central valley town of clemens, the porch light is on as it is every night at the home of cindy vanderhiten who wept missing -- went missing. a symbol of her parents wait. but her parents tonight say the light will stay on for all the unidentified victims of shermantine and herzog. >> a lot of families that need closure, and my porch light will stay on forever. because my home is always welcome. and i want them to find hope. >> reporter: the vanderhite n's say they never stopped searching for their daughter. they say she met herzog at the bar they used to own. >> it's sad that we'll never be able to bring her home alive. but it's good that we will be able to give her a proper burial. >> i told him there was no way in hell i would pay somebody that murdered my daughter. and so they said it was blood money and i would never do that. >> reporter: but the family says they are grateful to padilla. he convinced shermantine to reveal the grave site for money. herzog killed himself last month. the family says says they want shermantine to -- other families still waiting and wondering include the mother of a young stockton woman who disappeared without a trace 23 years ago. she is anxious for the search to continue. >> it's like a roller coaster ride because when i learned they were going to start digging, i got my hopes up and thought we're finally going to get a closure to it. >> reporter: kaiser is hoping authorities will dig up two other wells near that one in l i --lindon. a lay off threat at american medical response says amr is asking for them for a 25% pay cut. the service is also thinking about walking away from their contract with bay area hospitals. we made inqueries in colorado but so far have not received a response. berkeley police are facing criticism tonight for their handling of a homeowners report of a trespasser over the weekend. it ended with the homeowner being beaten to death. >> reporter: police say they were short in manpower, and they were responding only to high risk calls. >> robert sinai was a good friend of the victim. >> he raised two wonderful boys. and now he's no longer with us. i'm very sad about that. >> reporter: berkeley police say they received a call on their nonemergency line from cooker about a strange person on his property. but because officers were monitoring an occupy protest they were only responding to criminal in progress emergency calls. then a second call from the same address. this time from cooker's wife. she called 911 after hearing her husband screaming. police say officers were immediately dispatched. >> well i think one of the things that it shows is how limited our resources. >> reporter: are like many other cities, berkeley has endured cuts to its police department. the president of the police officers association telling me tonight that in 1996 the force was 200 plus strong. today there are 163 sworn officers. neighbors say they feed uneasy about the random weekend attack and police staffing. >> i think that's a statement of where our resources are going and our priorities. >> reporter: about a block from where cougar was dragged to the bushes and beaten to death, police arrested a 23-year-old man from alameda who has a history of mental illness. reporting live tonight, i'm heather holmes. that 23-year-old suspect now behind bars is tony duwith. his son was 18-year-olds old when he identified as a schizophrenic. >> our system is such that you go in, they shove them with anti psychotics and put them out again. in nine minutes, a bay area neighborhood targeted by vandals. the clues police have in their search for whoever is launching rocks into people's homes. a third marine is said to face court marshal tomorrow for haying a marine who killed himself. lance corporate harry lew committed suicide. just hours before that he was assaulted and humiliated by three marines because lew fell asleep on duty. one of those marines pleaded guilty. the other was demoted. harry lew's family is angry. >> don't think justice has been served. what's hard is to see what's the best outcome from this and that is that the military changes its attitude toward hazing. >> reporter: another asian american soldier private danny chin also committed suicide allegedly after ongoing hazing also in afghanistan. the court marshal is set for tomorrow in hawaii. the occupy movement came to the front gate of san quentin today. three of the protesters who showed up today recently made national headlines. hundreds of prison reformed activists merged with occupy oakland to occupy san quentin. people here demanded an end to the death penalty and complained that far more poor people are looked away than those with money. they also say there's few opportunities for those who come out. >> look on your application, convicted of a felony. you think they'll give me a job. you think they put that down so i can make sure i get housing. >> among those here, the two former prisoners held in iran. >> i know what that life is like. i know what it is like not to have control. and it's a terrible life. >> reporter: police were in position in case any protesters tried to the áf go through the gates. the roads in and around quintin were closed. people could not drive in and out. >> i interrupted my day, my day off of work. but it's making me pay attention to what's going on. >> reporter: the protesters also urged the public to contact governor jerry brown's office demanding prison reforms. at san quentin, rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. oakland police say a man shot by an officer during a foot chase late last night was carrying a gun. police say the officer pulled over a car containing two robbery suspects on 62nd avenue around 11:30 last night. a passenger ran from that car. the officer gave chase and shot him. police say they did recover a gun at the scene. the wounded man is hospitalized in stable condition tonight. the second person drove off during the incident and has not been found. oakland major jean quan led an effort to stop the violence. jean was joined by dozens of people. she encouraged unemployed adult and teens to come to a job fair next wednesday. howard jordan was also there to talk about a gun buy back effort. he wants people to call a gun tip hot line if they know of someone with a gun. finally a rescue plan is in the works to tackle the debt crisis in greece. that allows greece to receive a $170 billion bail out. a separate agreement was forged with private investors. without them greece could have gone bankrupt. so far though asian markets don't appear to be impressed and are lower in early trading. the price at the pump is rising, now above $4 a gallon crash. it happened around 8 miles south of the rio vista airport. a student pilot was navigating the chopper. we're finding out more about a deadly crash in san jose this evening. it happened on the northeast capital expressway. police say there were eight family members without seat belts inside the suv when it flipped. two people were ejected including victor gomez mendoza who died. the family was returning from a trip to mexico and the driver may have lost control because the road was wet. the driver was not cited or arrested. whoever was behind a rocket attack used some kind of launching attack to make the damage worse. the attacks all happened in a neighborhood in south lasco road. if not for one thing, her infant daughter might have been seriously injured, possibly even killed. i looked and i saw this through the window and i thought. oh my god. >> reporter: when this livermore mother returned home, she was shocked by what she found in her 1-year-old daughter's nursery. >> pretty scary. there was glass all over it. she wasn't home, thank god. >> reporter: the rock flu threw the baby's room, punching a hole in her wall. if she were not at her grandmother's house she would have been injured. police believe a group of vandals is behind the thousands of dollars of damages to window, mailboxes and cars including several windows at vineyard high alternative school. >> they're using some sort of device to launch the rocks. the speed and velocity they are going through, so many barriers, they're going through double pane windows, walls. >> reporter: they also have a video that could help catch the vandals. a neighbor who heard a noise captured this on his home surveillance system just before 2:00. it shows a white car leaving the area of charlotte common and charlotte way. police say the vandals are using this type of decorative yard rock. and because of this kind of damage, they are planning extra patrol. the garbage collection company recology is offering an apology to their customers. their customers were overcharged last month. residents were charged an increase of nearly 10%. recology says customers will get a credit next month. the writer reporter: an animal control officer sent this letter to neighbors that nunez had applied for a permit to have 300 roosters. but even though neighbors expressed opposition say nothing has been done. there are now between 400 and 500 roosters here and that the property owner makes $5,000 a month renting space to the birds owners. >> hi mr. nunez this is eric rasmussen with ktvu channel 2. >> reporter: despite several attempts we could not reach nunez to ask him about it. >> is jose here? >> no. >> mr. nunez. >> no. >> reporter: this woman who lives here gave us part of the story. >> he rents to people. and they keep roosters here. >> reporter: are those roosters used for fighting? >> no. >> reporter: she says they are just for show. but long time cock fighting expert isn't the tab on the front page. in sacramento a bill has been introduced in the assembly to keep food trucks away from schools. it would bar food trucks from being 1,500 feet from schools. santa cruz democrat bill monoing says he's concerned that the trucks are offering unhealthy food. >> this is an effort not to ban the trucks, not to take away their licenses. just to put into place some prohibitions during school hours. >> reporter: the bill would also give local health agencies more control over food trucks. santa cruz and nevado already have similar rules. the rule could make it difficult for food trucks to operate any where in the city since cities generally have several schools. the caffeine comes in a powder form and it's packed into pouches or tubes. it's being sold in new york, massachusetts and online. lawmakers say they worry teenagers could abuse it and question it's billing as a dietary supplement. the company that makes aero shot says it contains the same amount of caffeine as a large cup of coffee. ktvu has been looking into aero shot as well. tomorrow what we learned about the caffeine inhaler during our investigation as well as some of the risks that come with it. one bill already submitted was prompted by a 911 call for actress demi moore. she was rushed to the hospital back in january and later details from that 911 call were released to the public including details about her symptoms. assemblywoman torrez says her legislation would keep that kind of personal information private. critics say 911 disclosure helps ensure that dispatchers, police and energy crews are doing their jobs. among other bills introduced, the head of friday's deadline is one that would cap public employee pensions at $100,000 a year or $80,000 with the social security. another would prohibit a foreclosure while the borrower is negotiating a loan modification and a third would allow the sale of certain homemade foods including baked goods and candy. one of the last survivors of the great 1906 earthquake died over the weekend at the age of 109. a tribute to rose cliberg took place this afternoon. that's been the traditional gathering spot in a mountain outside of seattle. alise is a proskier. she deployed a safety air bag that provided boyansee as the avalanche overwhelmed her. the fire started just pwáfr -- before 5:00 a.m. today just east of the altamere expressway. most of the damage happened in the second floor of that building which is where lucky star tattoo is located. this is all that's left after flames tore through la rosa market on 23rd street in richmond. the fire department says this fire started at about 3:15 this morning in the back of the business. officials say it caused about $200,000 in damage and forced the market to shut down. no one was hurt. investigators are still trying to figure out what in serbia fr causing problems. one of the floating nightclubs sank. in japan, operators of the damaged nuclear power plant in fukushima gave journalists a look at the site and the devastation is still very apparent. it was nearly a year ago that the 9.0 quake and tsunami hit that plant and knocked out the coolant of six reactors. it'll take 15 to 20 years to fully clear that plant. america in mexico promised to work together while drilling. clinton said reservoirs benefit both countries. today is the
