will pack the penn state campus for the final home game of the season. many will be looking to focus on football instead of the sex abuse scandal that's dominating the headlines. former head coach joe paterno paterno did report the incident to university officials, neither man ever alerted police. >> i take this job with very mixed emotions. >> thursday penn state formally introduced tom bradley as interim head coach. the legend he replaced wasn't far from his thoughts. >> coach paterno has meant more to me than anybody except my father. and i don't want to get emotional and start talking about that. >> paterno remained out of the public eye thursday, staying inside his home, visiting with former assistants. nbc news reports he had hired a prominent prominent washington criminal defense attorney. a family spokesman denied that report. the man at the heart of the scandal, jerry sandusky, has denied any wrongdoing. he retired in 1999, but his retirement package included access to the football facility. while school officials were made aware of alleged assaults dating back to 2000, the former coach was seen working out on campus as recently as last week. >> i was mortified. just sick to my stomach. >> patty noble worked along syme sandusky for a decade at second mile, the charity he founded for at-risk kids. the indictment against him revealed all of his alleged victims at the foundation. she along with other volunteers feels duped. >> they all came back for the one reason, to help jerry sandusky, the second mile and the at-risk children. and unfortunately, we were feeding his habit. >> authorities know of nine alleged victims but are looking for more. texas officials are now involved. they are investigating whether any crimes were committed when penn state went to the alamo bowl in 1999. sandusky's last game with the team. a deadly shooting outside the anti-wall street demonstrations in oakland, california, does not appear to be related to the protests. a man was fatally shot last night. police say a fight between two groups of men broke out near the protesters. a shot was fired himself at the occupy wall street encampment thursday. they say the man had mental health issues. good news for veterans on this veterans day. the senate passed a bill to help unemployed vets. the measure passed 95-0 yesterday. the deal would award tax credits to companies that hire disabled vets who have been out of work for at least six months. the house is expected to approve the bill next week. now to the race for the republican presidential nomination. where it is getting close. a just-released cbs news poll of republican primary voters conducted this week shows herman cain in the top spot with 18%. but a surging newt gingrich is now tied with mitt romney at 15%. rick perry is in fourth. next, the candidates will square off in a debate tomorrow night in south carolina. susan mcginnis is in washington with more on that. good morning, susan. >> reporter: hi, good morning, betty. these latest difficulties for herman cain and rick perry could end up leaving fewer alternatives for voters looking for an alternative to mitt romney. still these two for now are doing all they can to stay in the race. rick perry hit the "late show with david letterman" to try to laugh off his latest debate slip-up. >> hey, listen, you try concentrating with mitt romney smiling at you. that is one handsome dude. >> reporter: last night he gave the top ten rick perry excuses, reasons he drew a blank wednesday trying to name the three federal agencies he would get rid of as president. >> commerce, education and the, uh, what's the third one there? let's see. >> reporter: the texas governor immediately jumped into damage control, canceling his campaign schedule thursday to appear on eight tv programs. >> number two. >> i wanted to help take the heat off my buddy, herman cain. >> reporter: perry will get another chance to redeem himself tomorrow when cbs hosts the debate in south carolina. but he's not the only gop hopeful trying to bounce back. >> it didn't kill me or slow us down one bit. >> reporter: in michigan, hundreds of supporters cheered on herman cain despite his sexual harassment scandal. michele bachmann's stop in south carolina didn't go as smoothly. dozens of occupy wall street protesters crashed her foreign policy speech. the minnesota congresswoman had to leave the stage before demonstrators marched out and she could continue. >> don't you have the first amendment? >> reporter: as for front-runner mitt romney, he's still trying to break out of the pack. while he's consistently led the polls, his support among fellow republicans has never risen above 25%. and plans for a joint press conference by all of cain's accusers has been shelved by now. and one of them says she was unable to find two of the other women and will not hold that without them. betty? at a grade school in hoover, alabama, madison saw her father for the first time in a year. he is an army staff sergeant just back home from a tour of duty in the middle east. it was just in time for veterans day which, of course, is today. an east texas soldier who was killed 61 years ago in the korean war is finally back home. the remains of sergeant first class benny rogers arrived yesterday in his hometown of athens, texas. amanda roberson of san antonio affiliate kytx has this story. >> it was gold to us. it was absolutely gold to us. >> reporter: it's been a long-awaited homecoming for sergeant benny rogers' family. >> it's a mixture of joy. it's also a mixture of sadness that he was only 20 years old, and he didn't get to live his life. >> reporter: his niece, ruth davis, was only a year old when her uncle went missing, but stories told by her grandmother, benny's mother, katie, kept his memory alive. >> his mother's only been passed away for three years. and she would have enjoyed this day so much because she prayed for it. for 60 years, she prayed for her boy to come home. and now he's home. >> even to tears today because i've been watching it all day and thinking back when katie got the telegram. >> reporter: 88-year-old edith mcavoy was benny's aunt and is the only living family member left that knew him. she was there when rogers' mother received word of her son's death. >> the mailman usually went to her house first. but this time he came to -- he came by. and when i seen him pulling up in the yard, i thought, something's happened. and so i went out. and he said, "i've got your sister-in-law one of them telegrams." she never gave up. she had his plot there by the family. and kept it. so i hope she knows he's come home. >> reporter: rogers' body is home. and as this family finds bittersweet closure, davis is keeping in mind the countless military families still looking for answers. >> there's so many of them that didn't come home from 60 years ago, and there are more that are coming back from iraq and afghanistan and places where they're serving now. they all deserve the honor that our uncle is getting today. >> reporter: amanda roberson, cbs news. >> indeed they do, especially on this veterans day. coming up a little bit later on "the early show," the latest on the scandal at penn state as the football team gets ready for its first big game without head coach joe paterno. plus, newt gingrich joins us to preview tomorrow's gop debate. and all hands on deck for a veterans day college basketball game like no other. that is going to be interesting to see. that's "the cbs morning news" for this friday. thanks for watching. i'm betty nguyen. have a great weekend. -- captions by vitac -- www.vitac.com
