among the dead. ktvu is amberleigh begins our coverage tonight after speaking with the family of one of the victims, amber julie. we're in downtown half moon bay were memorial for the victims has grown steadily now. tonight i spoke with the nephew of one victim who tells me his family is holding what's called a rosario prayer session for the next nine days to honor his uncle who was killed very kind of he has a very good father figure. um. use super supportive and whatever i did, he introduced me to a lot of stuff that i like to this day, carlos martinez tells me he and his family are still in disbelief that is uncle marciano martinez humanness was shot and killed monday while he was working at concord farms by a fellow farmworker. it's still like settling in with me again. so, um i still find it. i guess, unreal or surreal. carlos says his uncle's coworker told his family that the suspect walked into the workplace with a gun and that martinez humana's was the first to see the suspect and tried to stop him. he shot my uncle in the head and then, um uh, the worker and next to him was like basically saying, like, you don't have to do this and all this stuff and then the guy time something around the lines of like i have no beef with you. and no like i have no troubles with you. farm workers displaced by the shooting are seeking temporary shelter at a motel in half moon bay. nonprofits in the county are providing necessities such as clothing and food for them, advocates say latino and chinese farm workers have developed relationships over years, sharing food, breaking the language barrier as immigrants from different countries coming together like the working together, living together. this is not about dividing culture is about coming in as a community together. joaquin jimenez, the vice mayor of half moon bay, is also farmworker program director for the nonprofit alice. he says he knew and worked with the chinese gunmen and the victims, both latino and chinese brought something to the farm for everybody. as for the family of victim, martinez humanness carlos tells me when relatives couldn't reach his uncle by phone. after the shooting, they rushed down to the farm and learn from his co workers that he had been killed. it's mostly, um sadness for me. i'm not really angry. it's more like. um i'm just sad. my uncle was caught in between whatever was going on with the guy and whatever he had with anyone else, michael, just trying to do his job was trying to protect people there. right now you're looking at a live picture of the public memorial that has been set up here in downtown half moon bay. advocates say farm workers are receiving mental health services at the hotel where they're staying. the city and nonprofits are now working together to put organized a large public memorial. julie mike live tonight, there in half moon bay. amber. thank you. a community gathering was held in oakland tonight to remember those affected by the three reasons mass shootings in california. dozens of people attended lighting candles and leaving flowers for those killed and monterey park, half moon bay and in east oakland, oakland, a api united coalition of more than 25 groups, organized the vigil at wilma champ park. we wanted to create a space tonight. so that people who feel alone for people who feel afraid when people are hurting from people who need other people. to be here. others including victims of gun violence, expressed the hope that there will be action to prevent future tragedies like these were here in solidarity and action. to advocate federally, regionally and locally so that we can create more communities that are vibrant. that are safe so that all of our people can work, learn and thrive. many faith leaders also attended, offering prayers and reading the names of those who have died. the man in custody for the shootings in half. moon bay was in court this afternoon to face the charges. 66 year old channel isao is charged with seven counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. he did not enter a plea zero also faces enhancements for using a legally purchased tonight outside of school board meeting over stalled contract talks. united teachers of richmond organized the rally outside lavagna dejan middle school. the group says its members have already taken a vote to authorize a strike. they say an increase in salary is a main issue of debate here and argue that the district is not sharing the boost in funding that it received from the state. the state has given our district so much money and they're choosing not to allocate those funds and the way they should be allocated. i have colleagues who are sleeping in a sofa because they cannot afford to rent a one bedroom, one bathroom and the community they love and teaching. the members are also asking the district for shared decision making between educators, administrators and parents. when it comes to their school district has not commented on the labor talks. francisco judge has ruled in favor of releasing the body cam footage stemming from the paul pelosi attack. 11 media outlets , announced a civil rights investigation into a traffic stop in the state of tennessee. lawyers for the man who was detained, say he died days later as a result of being beaten by officers. and tonight the city of memphis is preparing for the release of police body cam video from that traffic stop foxes. caroline shively has the story on the federal investigation. lawyers for the family of tyree nichols say memphis police beat the black men like a human pinata in video that is reminiscent of rodney king. on wednesday, the justice department and fbi announced a criminal civil rights investigation into his death. it will be methodical. and it will continue until we gather all the relevant facts. as with any other fer. lawyers for his family say police, pepper sprayed tased and kicked nichols. he died in the hospital three days later. the five officers who are also black, have since been fired. but after viewing police body cam video, the family wants the men to be charged with first degree murder . i don't have any feelings right now. i don't even know how to i don't know anything right now. all i know is my son tyree is not here with me anymore. memphis is now bracing for potential unrest. takeaway overall is that whatever we're going to see on that video when it gets released is so terrible that the authorities know they have to get out in front of it by reassuring the public that they're working on the case. it will be another week or possibly two until the body cam video is released to the public in washington. caroline shively fox news still to caused thousands of dollars in damage after a hit and run. as the community steps up to show their support. ktvu is jana katsuyama joins us now she is at that memorial, jenna. julie this is at the aras location that helps the farm workers and just this evening, they put up this altar in front of their offices. it has pictures of the victims and flowers that came from throughout the community. many people say that their hearts are going out to this community of farmworkers, which they say are often invisible. two brothers were among the victims who were gunned down monday in the mass shootings in half moon bay. romero perez was a 38 year old father, a family member tells ktvu that his wife and four children are living in oaxaca, mexico. his brother, pedro romero. perez was shot but survived after undergoing surgery at the hospital. the relative says the brothers came to half moon bay about one year ago to work and live at the mountain mushroom farm on highway 92. another victim killed was marciano martinez jimenez. it is also from mexico , and five of the victims were chinese farm workers to work couples 73 year old xue shan liu and i xiangxiang, where husband and wife from san francisco mandarin speaking farmworkers 66 year old changcheng and his wife, 64, year old ginger lew. where cantonese speaking farmworkers, another victim killed with your towel being a 43 year old farm worker. we do have some asian, indian and filipinos that our farm workers, but chinese is really rare rarity to have chinese farmworkers. darlene tennis is founder of the farmworker caravan. late wednesday night. her nonprofit arrived at the allah's house that works with local farm workers bringing donations for the families. most farm workers don't report things because the large majority and doc documenting the 90% sometimes, depending on the location. these photos taken just weeks before the mass shooting show the trailers where the farm workers were living at the mountain mushroom farm when volunteers brought food and donations, farmworker caravan just went there actually, a few weeks ago, right at christmas week of christmas. we did last posadas there, and we had volunteers that made thousands of tamales and christmas stockings for the children. and so i was thinking it was only a latino. community work on the farms. but i was oh, it's some more community here in this area and lives in this area working the farms. i never saw that chinese people. that's my first time that i saw them. yeah there was very quiet. so they say, they say thank you for because we again we were in the food for them, even longtime residents in half moon bay are shocked, invisible. workforce it's feeling everybody that people outside of the agricultural areas just don't understand. it was an eye opener that people who are living in trailers on site were driven by a million times on highway 92. who knew. and a coalition of asian and chinese nonprofits in the san mateo county area say that they plan to hold a gathering on friday to try and support some of these families reporting live in half moon bay. jana katsuyama ktvu, fox two news 10 police have made an arrest in connection to an attempted rape in oakland 32 year old giovanni redmond was arrested by bart police officers in san francisco . investigators say he attacked a store worker pulling off their clothing. that attack happened in oakland last week. right near 47th and international. the alameda county d. a s office says redman is facing other charges of battery and brandishing a weapon in other cases. berkeley police have released video of a man in connection to an attempted kidnapping. you can see the man here highlighted in the video walking across sproul plaza on the couch. campus investigators say it about five last night that man approached a woman at hurston. euclid grabbed her arm and then threatened to sexually assault her. the woman was able to pull away and then ran to a joins us tonight from santa clara university, where a vigil was held earlier this evening for all of the shooting victims, lamonica. everyone i spoke to tonight talked about their frustration with the level of violence in our country, and the mental health professionals says that there are always signs and triggers that could lead someone to take the lives of innocent people. i am tired. god. i'm tired of the unwillingness to see this as an important issue. dozens of people gathered in front of the mission church at santa clara university wednesday night to pray for the mass shooting victims and to pray for healing. i didn't realize this has impacted me. on a deep level. it wasn't until i heard the words of the people here where i actually felt something. i was like, wow, i needed to feel that doctor to watch from asian health services in oakland, says the recent rise of hate crimes in the us against asians during the pandemic has only added to the stress many people in the community were already feeling many of the asian americans, particularly immigrants, they have come from a country where there's been so much violence whether it's war. or other types of persecution. and so this this experience that the recent events in the last few days right around lunar new year has been triggering shooting suspects in half moon bay and monterey park, where both asian men in their sixties and seventies, but dr thomas plant says it's rare for seniors of any background to commit these types of acts. perhaps it speaks to that. you know anybody is capable of using a firearm and in their anger in their aggression in their impulse control troubles or have you and it speaks to that. you know, no one is immune. doctor plant also says most people with mental illness do not cause mass shootings and mental health issues shouldn't be stigmatized . i dream of mental health that is communal, and that isn't just for individuals that is. ah! collaborative and that isn't just like i'm the expert on who you are, and i feel frustrated. i feel angry. i feel compelled to do something. i don't know what that something is, but i want to do something. dr squatch also says that it's immediately. we're going to do something, but we had to, like, get all the pieces together have come together. they did helping hands for a community that's hurting, you know, to provide them a little bit of comfort farmworker caravan in san jose is gathering donations by the bag box and bottle emergency supplies for 40 farmworker families. devastated by monday's mass shooting in half moon bay. there still processing there's in shock. outreach groups like alice are taking note of what's needed knowing victims. families have been displaced amid a murder investigation. they're out of work. they haven't been able to return home or where they work delivery driver left flowers outside the drive to mountain mushroom farm, a place that one month ago was celebrating with tamales for christmas, now a place marked by crime. i'm seen tape. think anything like that would happen out here now. today i don't want to cry just the whole tragedy. i just wanted to do what i could. neighbors like nancy rap gave away new clothes and a check in hopes of helping the farm workers. they work hard for little money they live in. unconscionable. circumstances they're forgotten. this is a community that is in the shadows. this is a community that is oftentimes vilified and these are hardworking people that are working 40 to 70 hours a week and they're living in poverty, which is why farmworker caravan is making it a mission for them to be seen and cared for made all these hats. under bringing out the best in people just a little something that i can do with just helps hope it helps the worst of times. it just breaks my heart. unfortunately um, a lot of the children were there when the shooting happened, so it's been very traumatic for the families a sad reality that's being placed on administrative leave. ktvu obtained insurance claim records showing pictures of the mercedes benz with front end damage. the owner's insurance claim total nearly $14,000. we've learned the sergeant's name is michael chong, and that he was driving a city owned vehicle when he hit the mercedes in a san francisco parking lot. and then left the scene in march of 2021 reportedly told police investigators he didn't remember the accident last year, chang was put on paid leave after allegedly firing his gun inside an elevator at opd headquarters . efforts to reach young and his attorney had been unsuccessful in investigation is underway in san francisco tonight after a deadly fire in portrayal hill. firefighters received that first report of fire on turner terrorist. this was just before noontime today when engines rolled up on scene. firefighters saw heavy smoke and flames. three other people in the apartment were able to get out safely. firefighters did find the way fourth person inside, but fire officials say that victim succumbed to their injuries. police say one person was shot and wounded during a robbery today in campbell, this happened just before 11 this jose. camera and video. police have not said if the shooting and robbery happened inside the store or outside or whether anybody has been arrested. the victim was transported to the hospital. that apparently stolen more than a year ago, the family drove from san diego to livermore, where their pet was returned. the dog was found in the bay area on january 4th inside a parked car that had been
