He’s proud of this. Consider the scene at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6 — the most violent insurrection in America since the Civil War. Durfee stood outside the domed Capitol building that day as one of New Jersey’s most unabashedly visible members of far-right "Oath Keepers," a coalition of active and retired police and soldiers who have been linked by federal law enforcement authorities to domestic terrorism. But Durfee, 67, of Northvale, who is running as a Republican for the State Assembly, claims he did not witness an assault on the Capitol by throngs of supporters of former President Donald Trump. No matter that FBI and Homeland Security officials insist that mobs of Trump followers attacked police and rushed into the halls of Congress in a failed attempt to block the certification of Joe Biden’s presidency. No matter that plenty of video and photographic evidence supports this narrative.
