>> reporter: they have. some experts are saying there should be about a 10% increase from last year to this year. shoppers have more hours in the day to shop because so many of these big box stores are opening earlier and earlier. >> thank you very much for joining us. while the stores are opening early, others never closed. while most of you got a chance to spend thanksgiving at home for your family, others took one for the team and the customers. >> people that come here to shop, one of a kind. i like to see the people's face, expressions and make them happy. >> the market was open today for people looking to buy that last minute bit for the holiday meal. workers say nay enjoy being able to make people happy during the holidays. the homeless often don't have way to get to shelters for thanksgiving dinner. one group of volunteers decided to bring the feast to them. marianne favro has more from san jose. >> reporter: when this van pulled up at st. james park in san jose, a hundred homeless people lined up. seth said he dreaded the day but the meal gave him hope. >> i woke up not knowing what i was going to eat. i looked forward to a sandwich and it turns into a bit better. i guess things turned out all right. >> reporter: he said once he tasted this dessert his day got sweater. bob man, spearheaded the effort to bring a meal directly to the homeless. >> they don't have transportation to get to a shelter. they are afraid of going to a shelter and getting turned down or turned away. >> reporter: bob got the idea last year after a feast he brought a few leftovers. hundreds of homeless lined up to get the leftovers. he decided to return this year with much more, including 100 homemade pumpkin and apple pies. several coworkers and his 12-year-old nephew joined him. >> they don't have worry about them trying to go through trash cans and finding food that other people have eaten. they can have a nice good meal. >> happy thanksgiving to you. >> reporter: handing out food is important to steve. he was once homeless himself and know what is a difference a meal can make. >> it reminds me of how it was for me. i stayed three, four nights completely homeless not going to a shelter. i know how it feels to be in the cold. >> reporter: the sandwiches may be cold but the thanksgiving gift couldn't be warmer. >> i'm very thankful. >> reporter: marianne favro. even the occupy movement took time to celebrate. glide memorial church were on the road. they helped feed the protesters. hundreds lined up turkey and other traditional dishes. >> this is day to enjoy family and connection and food and we at glide to that well. we want to share with the occupy movement. >> glide church has a long history of helping those in need. hundreds of volunteers got up early to make sure people have a hot meal. we take a look behind the scenes. >> reporter: they were cold, they were wet, but thanks to volunteers they won't be going hungry. >> you saw the line of folks outside who are waiting to get their meal. what's it like to see that?
