good evening. i'm dan ashley. the president is scheduled to speak in a few minutes in redwood city. he arrived at moffet field just after 6:00 and was whisked away to a private fundraiser and is en route to his appearance in downtown redwood city. we showed you a picture just a moment ago before we came on with the broadcast. alan wang is live in atherton tonight. >> just three minutes ago the president's motorcade drove by here and e is on his way to redwood city. he rolled into atherton just after 7:00 tonight. neighbors came out to see the president but they only came within about 50-yards of his limo as it turned down toward the home of lisa and doug goldman. there ithey are the levi strauss heirs. the guests a mix of industry and tech giants. along with pandora founder and several top google execs. if you lived within a half mile from here and you weren't invited it was harder to get around the neighborhood. >> so far i found a number of blocked roads and it is kind of like a matrix work back to one road to get to another road to hope i get home. >> reporter: in this economy silicon valley is one of the few places where politicians are likely to fill up campaign coffers. it is likely we will see more of these visits from the president and other politicians before november. the president was expected to pick up a quick $3 million tonight. now, he is on to redwood city. thanks very much. and the president is en route to redwood city. he will be speak at the fox theater there. we intend to bring that to you live when it happens so stay here with us. house speaker john boehner in the bay area in the hopes of picking up campaign cash. he h held a fundraiser at the home of billionaire tom seibel. tickets for the event cost as much as $35,000. $1,000 for the general reception and $5,000 for a photo with boehner. a group of protesters showed up as well but their complaints were mostly with state representative dan lundgren who sponsored the event. >> they are working together to 99%. seniors and women and we are saying enough is enough. speaker boehner should go back to ohio and dan lundgren doesn't deserve another term in congress because he is to extreme. well, president obama and house speaker john boehner are just the first two politicians in a conga line of fund raising events in the bay area. paul ryan is coming to san francisco tomorrow morning for another republican campaign event. he is charging $2,500 per person. and on may 30, presidential candidate mitt romney will hold a fundraiser in hillsborough. cohosted by hewlett pack card ceo meg whitman and top ticket price is $50,000 per person. hewlett packard confirmed major layoffs today, 8% of its workforce it represents the largest payroll punch in its 73 year history. tough medicine. the cuts in part due to the growing popularity of smart phones, tablets and other mobile devices that make it tougher for the company to sell personal computers. hp expects to save $3.5 billion a year from the cuts. meantime after an initial public stock offering marred by glitches and errors last week facebook is now reportedly in talks to make a big switch to the new york stock exchange. facebook shares now sold on the nasdaq posted a $1 gain today but still trading 15% below the offering price just last friday. the company is now facing lawsuits and a government investigation over its ipo. we shall see, more to come involving facebook. let's talk about the weather. we saw strong winds around here today and they are continuing tonight in a number of spots. let's get a quick update from spencer christian. >> as you pointed out, a strong and steady flow of winds out of the northwest throughout the day. the winds increased in intensity in the late afternoon and early evening. right now the strongest winds right along the coastline. sfo gusts up to 41 miles per hour. half moon bay up to 28 miles per hour. the winds have eased up in some other locations inland and around the bay. peak gusts this evening early at sfo, 52 miles per hour. the winds pick up again tomorrow so get ready to hold on to your hat and we might even have rain on friday. i will tell you all about that in the accuweather seven-day forecast a little later. >> rain and friday. thanks very much. the man accused in the murder of sierra lamar will get his first court date tomorrow. today a major new search for the missing bay area teenager. finding her remains is as urgent as the effort was originally to find her alive. laura anthony with more on that. new details about the man now accused of killing sierra. >> reporter: two days after garcia torrez was arrested for the murder of sierra lamar this man showed up for his first day as a volunteer searcher. >> he is putting out the information now it is our turn to look for information and i'm doing what i can to help rescue, search or find her. >> a sheriff's dive team spent the day combing the waters of the reservoir, searching for a body. >> i don't think so for him doing something back. >> his mother has proclaimed his innocence. sierra's parents hope he provides some clues as to her whereabouts. >> i pray he releases information to help our search in finding sierra. >> we need information. if we don't get it we will not stop. we will continue what we are doing and we will find her. >> before moving to a morgan hill trailer park garcia torres lived with his mother in a rental unit. the older told abc 7 sheriff's deputies were a frequent visitors. in 2009 then 18-year-old garcia torres was arrested for having sex with a minor, a teen who was the mother of the couple's 19 month old child. in 2010, he was arrested for obstructing police when they came to arrest another man at his home. garcia torres told deputies "get out of my house you pigs." he was also charged with vandalism for graffiti and plugging a toilet in his jail cell. for that he wrote an apology letter saying "i'm sorry, i got bored in there." sierra's sister says whether the suspect talks or not, he will not control their family. >> we can't give him that power. >> reporter: searchers still showing up here trying to do anything they can to help. there will be no search this coming saturday at the request of the parents who would like to give volunteers the holiday weekend off with their families. meantime, the suspect will be arraigned tomorrow afternoon in san jose on murder and kidnapping charges. in morgan hill, laura anthony, abc 7 news. a fire broke out tonight on a nuclear powered sub marine at a shipyard in maine. it started in the forward compartment of the sub in maine. not far from portsmouth, new hampshire. several firefighters were hurt but we understand they are okay. coming up here, the sixness during pregnancy that increases the chances of having an autistic child. and california's top science students win accolades at the state capital while pointing out a major flaw with high school classes. a cartoon fun gus and sneezing monkey and why they are on a specec the state assembly is considering reducing the penalty for simple drug possession from a felony >> reporter: supporters believe this illustrates how innovation can stimulate california's economy that these kids are tomorrow's job creators and it all begins with stem, science, technology education and math. because of california's continued budget crisis the governor proproses to cut the second year science requirement in high school to save $245 million. for decades schools have gotten reimbursed by the steats foretopping a second science class but the governor wants to move away from state mandates because he is too expensive. it means districts will have to find the money themselves to continue the program. >> i personally went to the school board and said this is a good requirement but we want the locals to pick that up otherwise they charge us. >> critics say, though, after years of decreased state funding schools can barely keep the lights on let alone pay for science curriculum. >> the problem is all of this is being done during a time when other states and other countries are boosting seances and technology education to make their students and their population more cometive in this global market. >> university of california and cal state require two years of science for admission. if you are in a school where you can't take the second-class it will be tough to get in. the options? >> i go to carnegie mellon university. >> i go to mit. >> a california brain drain. our planet has new company these days. more than 200 new species were discovered last year and scientists have come up with a list of the top ten. they include a sneezing tonight on this clear evening. hoer is what was happening this afternoon. clear skies along the coast because we had the strong flow of northwesterly winds sweeping away any clouds giving us clear skies but cool conditions and strong gusty earlier in the day. right now, gusts up to 38 miles about per hour at sfo. 20 at half moon bay. 20 santa rosa. all the other locations reporting much calmer winds than the last several hours. temperature readings in the 50s around the bay. and a few low 60s in our inland locations. it will be clear and a breezy overnight. windy and cool for the next two days and a slight chance of showers on friday. a very unlate spring like conditions. late may like conditions. here is the setup on the satellite radar composite giving us the windy conditions. the winds are rather brisk and forceful. and we have got this cold upper level low to the north that drops southward and complicates things further. the forecast animation at 11:00 tonight. the next 24-48 hours the low brings some showers. enough to produce some hour activity and may see showers by friday in parts of the north bay and parts of the east bay and snow levels in the see could be down below 6,000 feet. patches of low clouds and fog but not very widespread. low temperatures from upper 40s to low 50s and then tomorrow high temperatures under sunny skies will be lower than today. in the south bay, cool and breezy. 68 cupertino and san jose. 64 san mateo. 65 redwood city. 66 palo alto. mid 50s on the coast and pacifica and half moon bay. downtown san francisco a high of 61. 56 in the sunset district. up i the north bay mainly low 70s. new east bay highs mid to upper 60s. 67 oakland and fremont. inland east bay, low 70s. 73 concord, 72 livermore. upper 60s near the bay and low 70s inland. the accuweather seven-day forecast. we will start to warm up over the weekend but friday a cool day with inland highs only around 70 in the warmest spots. monday, memorial day 80 degrees senator called bureaucratic babysitters. of the 12 secret service personnel accused three cleared, nine being removed. at least two are challenging the disciplinary action. some of the agents say they did not pay for sex and did not know the women were prostitutes and some suggested the agency rules on off duty behavior was vague. >> this is called the secret circus, not the secret service. >> the thought of a notion that this type of behavior is condoned or authorized is absurd. >> members of congress are demanding more answers about whether there has been a pattern of rogue behavior. when abc [ zapping ] [ clang ] this is the next level of performance. the next level of innovation. the next rx. the all-new f sport. this is the pursuit of perfection. is going for aluminum. cullen jones is in it for water-resistant thermoplastic. and amanda mcgrory? she's competing for carbon fiber. they're not just going for gold, they're joining with citi to give back to the programs that helped them along the way with bikes, kickboards. and racing chairs. join the movement at citi.com/everystep and help citi help our u.s. athletes give back together, every step of the way. good evening, once again. suspended san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi is fighting for his job and for his family. too that end he is giving his first in depth television interview about the domestic violence scandal he is involved in to the abc 7 news i-team and responding to our interview with his life and dan noyes traveled to venezuela to talk with her exclusively and he is here tonight with the report. >> he has a lot at stake. ross mirkarimi has lost income. his wife is gone and so is his son and startrded with what he admits was a big mistake on new year's eve. i started the interview by playing the video we shot on saturday in caracas, venezuela of ross mirkarimi's three-year-old son it theo. he hasn't seen the boy in person in more than a month. >> he is a runner. he is fast, too. >> he kept his composure until he saw this, his wife hugging their son. >> she's gorgeous. >> reporter: he hasn't seen her or had a substantive of course conversation with her since january 13 when the courts issued a protective order. it is something neither wanted. >> the system won't allow us to go to counseling together. i can't provide. i'm so dieing to be able to reunite and repair and rebuild. i want our son to have his parents together. >> we have you our problems wih the marriage and we have to deal with that. i wanted to deal with that. >> reporter: the couples had a long running disagreement over her returning to venezuela so often. she was home sick and ross worked too much but it boiled over on new year's eve on the way to get pizza for lunch. the argument grew so intense he turned the family van around and headed home. >> it was then we came back home and i said okay, we cannot talk and he grabbed my arm and in the moment i said stop, he stop it and he react like oh, my gosh and i said okay, let's go inside. >> reporter: he understood that he shouldn't touch you and he let go. >> he immediately when i said stop he stopped. >> i want to understand atmy point were you afraid for your safety. >> no, never. >> were you afraid for theo's safety? >> never. >> it was out and she was half in and half out of the car and i was still in the driver's seat seatbelted. maybe a few fingers around her arm to say come on back. >> a neighbor shot a video of the bruise and called police. she tells me she feels betrayed by madison. >> i was shocked, of course. i was like. >> reporter: were you angry at her? >> no, in that moment i was so confused. i was like she don't have my permission. >> madison refused my request for an interview but a statement from her attorney reads in part, ms. lopez never suggested confidentialallity and asked for help from others. mirkarimi are pleaed down the domestic violence charges to false imprisonment. he was suspect suspended withoy and an ethics commission investigation started to fire mirkarimi. he said it has turn inside a political circus. >> why should you remain the sheriff? >> well, i -- because i can be the most effective sheriff i think that the city would be proud of and i think one of the most effective sheriff if not most effective in the united states. >> reporter: mirkarimi sees his son each day by skype and i will show you tonight on abc 7 news at 11:00. this ordeal has had a serious effect on the boy both emotionally and physically and i'll have a question for ileana that many people are asking. >> reporter: the big question that everybody wants to know is are you coming back to san francisco? >> a frank discussion from both ileana lopez and her husband coming up ton
