WBAL Today February 1, 2010

we are back now with wild sound effects and the first day of february, 2010. and it s coming in bright and sunny here in new york city. a little chilly, also. temperature only in the mid 20s. we want to wish her a happy birthday, the big 5-0, we ve both been there. out on the plaza, lots of nice people saying hi to the people back home. inside, i m matt lauer, along with al roker and ann curry. natalie is off today. recalls have been in the news a lot. you ve got a way for consumers to understand the information. from the head of toyota sales in the united states, you heard this morning, the one making news this morning about toyota and the problems with accelerator pedals. today the automaker announced a fix for the problem here on this broadcast. what if you have a product that has been recalled and you don t know anything about it what are the guidelines for consumers to find out if you have a problem and how to fix it, if you do. you can t fix it if you don t know it s being recalled. next, if you saw these two women walking down the street, would you think one of them was obese? absolutely not. well, it turns out you can be thin on the outside, but unhealthy on the inside. it s called someony fat, one more thing to worry about. we ll explain you re skinny and that s not enough. plus, the show-stopping moment at the grammys last night, after a moving tribute to the king of pop, two of michael jackson s children took the stage. we ll show you why it brought the normally boisterous crowd to silence, plus who the big winners were last night. and we want to let you know about an exclusive interview that s coming up. we ll head down to the white house for a visit with first lady, michelle obama to get her thoughts on being a mom, a first lady in the spotlight one year into this obama administration. learn about a project she is passionate about. that s first lady, michelle obama wednesday only here on today. but first, you ve got a check of all the morning s headlines. that s right. in fact in the news this morning, the head of toyota s u.s. sales division said this morning on this broadcast, that parts needed to fix a sticking gas pedal problem should start arriving at dealers by the end of this week. and speaking with matt, the president of toyota s u.s. sales division had this advice for drivers who had one of the recalled vehicles and might be concerned about driving it before it gets fixed. in the case of the sticky accelerator, it comes on over time. so i would suggest to a customer that has a sensation that the pedal is slow in returning, or that the pedal is not smooth in going down, that they should contact their dealer and get their vehicle in. mr. lentz also denied that his company was slow in responding to the gas pedal problem. president obama today sent congress a $3.8 trillion federal budget that projects a record-breaking deficit of $1.6 trillion. it includes $100 billion to encourage businesses to boost hiring. in haiti, ten americans are waiting to hear if they ll be tried on chirld trafficking charges, they were arrested over the weekend, allegedly for trying to take 33 haitian children across the border into the dominican republic, without authorization. meantime, the u.s. military is resuming airlifts of earthquake victims. the military had stopped carrying injured patients to the united states last week. a weekend storm that dumped up to a foot of snow on parts of the east coast has moved offshore this morning. the storm is being blamed for at least four deaths in north carolina. avatar made it seven weeksds in a row at the top of the box office, taking in another $30 million and topping the $2 billion mark worldwide. edge of darkness was second. and there was a big birthday celebration over the weekend. in california for the inventor named douglas engelbart, he turned 85 years old, credited with inventing the computer mouse and helping to develop email, video conferencing and the internet. so happy birthday, douglas. it is now three minutes past the hour. let s get another check of the weather from al. i thought al gore invented the internet. wait a minute. let s see what s happening today weatherwise. for the temperatures for february, much above normal to above normal through the western third of the country. we re looking at below-normal temperatures, gulf coast into the southeast. precipitationwise, it s going to be wet through the southern tier of states. drier than normal and normal conditions from the great lakes into the northeast. today s weather, wet weather from the pacific northwest down into northern california. freezing fog from texas into oklahoma. light snow in northern parts of the mississippi river valley. sunshine along the the weather should be nice and quiet this monday. a cold start for us. plenty of sunshine to the day. maybe a couple clouds through the afternoon. and now today s health. and the phenomenon dubbed skinny fat. our recent wall street journal article warns that just because the scale says you re thin and you look skinny on the outside, doesn t mean you re healthy on the inside. so what are the dangers? well nutritionist and today contributor, joy bauer is here to tell us. joy, good morning. good morning, al. now you get, you lose your weight, but you still may be obese on the inside? normal weight obesity or skinny fat is basically when you look super-slim and trim, you have a healthy bmi, that s your body mass index. when you step on the scale you have a light or appropriate number. but at the same time you have a high worrisome proportion of body fat, which promotes inflammation throughout the body. and increases your risk for obesity-related conditions. like heart disease, like type ii diabetes and metabolic syndrome. so even though you look healthy on the outside, your insides may not be doing so great. and according to the study, 30 million americans? 30 million americans, yes. this was eye-opening. now, is it more predominant with men or with women? no. it s across the board. we have a couple of women here. but really across the board. how do you know whether you re, you ve got skinny fat? well what we did, we did our own little experiment. we took a handful of women and we had an expert, jeralyn cooper smith, an exercise physiologist, she used skin fold cap perfects and tested their body fat. these were all women with healthy body mass indices, their normal weight. we brought a couple of people back here from the survey. we ve got nancy. and diane. and you re going to take a look at both of them. both of them are wearing skinny jeans, they ve got it going on. but one is fit and one is skinny fat. can you guess which one? i have no idea. first of all, i don t want to get smacked by either one of them. they both look pretty fabulous. i have no idea, you ve got to tell me. let s look at diane first. diane looks fabulous, she exercises regularly. she doesn t weight-resistant training as well. her body fat clocks in at a super-fit 19%. that s unbelievable off the charts. so now, we re going to look at nancy. nancy, on the other hand, is is a genetic lean machine, she s never had to work at this fabulous body she doesn t exercise, she does not closely watch her diet and her body fat clocks in at 27%. now is that getting into the more dangerous range. she is considered skinny fat, she is at risk for all source of obesity-related illnesses. nancy, when you found out, what did you think? i was floored. when joy gave me my number, i was floored. i said, oh my goodness, all this time i ve been genetically blessed. weight was not an issue. diet and exercise were not a priority. now knowing what i know, it back-fired, i have to work out more and put more effort into my health. what causes this, joy? what s the difference between the two women? exactly that. you can t judge a book by its cover is the big message here. it s not enough to be thin. weight is not the sole indicator of your health status. you have to watch what you eat, you have to regularly exercise, both cardioand walking and dancing and light weight training. diane, you work out on a pretty regular basis. i do cardiofive days a week and strength training five days a week and i watch what i eat. is it s not just the weight, you ve got to work at this? nobody gets a free pass. whether you re skinny or whether you re fat, you have to make health a priority. you ve got to eat right and exercise. and you also got to get to the doctor and know your number, that s a snapshot as to what s going on on your insides. your cholesterol, your blood pressure, your blood sugar. it all matters. doing this body-fold fat test, is that really accurate? or should you go to your doctor to get a more accurate reading. it s a great question. doctor offices right now are not testing body-fat percentage. maybe in a few years they ll start incorporating this as regular exams. i think if you have access to a gym and you have an expert that can do these body-fat compositions, great. home skaels are now incorporating the measurements, they re not too pricey. there s margins for error. they do an inner scan? yes. but the message is not to scare everybody out there. no, just to depress us. no, no, no. that, too. just to know that if you take care of your diet and you regularly exercise, and you get your numbers checked, you will make sure that you re in good shape. nancy, what are you going to do now to get the number down? i m going to exercise and watch what i eat and work hard. woo hoo. amen. and diane, you can lay off and have a twinkie. al roker! wrecking the segment. i m kidding, i m kidding. congratulations, and nancy, you ve got something to do. there you go. we re going to bring her back and check it. joy bauer, thanks so much. a fascinating idea. in the wake of the massive toyota recall, what you need to know if you think you ve got a defective product. whether it s a car or anything else. and still to come, britain s prince harry, carrying on his mother s tradition of charity, but first, these messages. heavy greasy food that s hard on my diet. and my digestive system. so i eat activia light every day. activia light, with bifidus regularis is clinically proven to help regulate your digestive system. mmmm. the new taste is better than ever. and with only 70 calories activia light helps make it easier to watch my weight. it helps me feel good and look good too! activia! no, no, no - in out uh, in out no, in [ female announcer ] yoplait light, with 28 delicious flavors at about 100 calories, it only tastes fattening ok, i was just outside out and then i came in - so if you could. this morning on today s consumer, recalls the massive toyota recall has blasted acrosses the airwaves but have you wondered if something you own is possibly defective and you missed the recall? consumer s digest editor is here with more on this. i may miss a recall information. how do you, what happens when that happens? well there s no standard way to get a recall out. and if you happen to tune in and it s huge, like toyota, great, you ll hear about it but i have a friend, heather, who had pottery barns kids shades in her house and found out from a safety expert who happened to be there, that the cord could strangle her kids. she didn t know it was recalled. that s something where, if you don t know, you won t have it taken care of. she did get issued a refund after somebody else pointed it out to her. we ve got the toyota cars and floor mats we ve been talking about on the news this morning. chenille bathrobes because of their flamability and tylenol children s medication containing bacteria. that s just a few of them. there s a lot of news coming out about that. anything dealing with children is very scary. we had the big strollers with the mclaren, that was blasted across the news. the smaller ones might not be. here s what you need to do. you need to register with a website called recalls.gov. what they will do is email you alerts on any kind of recall there is out there. so you will be alerted. also, ann, you know a lot of times you fill out the warranty cards when you buy a product, hair dryer or tv, sometimes you throw them out and sometimes you keep them. that s a good way for a company to get in touch with you. because they have your information. they know the model that you purchased and they can tell you when a recall has been issued. a and also you can seek a resolution. when you have an item and you know it s being recalled, you have to figure out what to do with it. right, do you throw it out, get a replacement part. that s up to the manufacturer, but you can strike a deal with them. heather didn t want a credit from pottery barn. but she actually got a credit and actual money back to her account. that was a good resolution for her. for the huge recalls the mclaren strollers, they ll send a small device to fix the problem, and that s great, but you need to know about it. when do you call the consumer product safety commission, what triggers that? let s say you re buying a product used at a garage sale or someone is giving you a car seat, let s say and you don t know if there s been a recall issued. you can look at their website, you can call the cpsc. a new thing moms are doing now is twittering with companies, here s the consumer product safety commission number. you can call them if you suspect that suspect you own is defective and you want to alert them to a possible recall. and it is your duty to do that. but about moms twittering. they re twittering with the companies to have a dialogue with them about i m concerned about this, i m concerned about that. do they actually get the companies pay attention? they pay attention. it s a great way to get the information out there really fast. a mom did it with graco. she found out a graco product had a problem. that was a quick way to find out that there was a recall. maybe it s because we re in the news, janice, but it seems that there s a lot of children s praukts that have undergone a recall. cribs and beds and strollers. it seems like it s a constant theme. when people go to these garage sales, you mentioned this earlier, they should be very wary, should they not, when they buy things used that involve children. would that be, is that fair to say? i would ask the seller if they could put it on hold, get to a computer, run a quick check and see if there was a problem with that particular model. because you don t want to buy a car seat that s been recalled for any reason. or if it s cheap enough, buy it and toss it if it s not right. are there other things in stores that could be under recall that the stores may not know about them? or are they pretty much all gone? the stores have three days to pull anything off store shelves once a recall has been issued. if you think there s a problem, report it. they have 24 hours to look into it and then pull it off shelves. i think recalls.gov and having the alert is a good bit of advice. sign the warranty cards and loyalty clubs and twitter. coming up next, the moving michael jackson tribute that brought the crowd to silence last night. at the grammy awards is coming up right after this. and symbicort is already helping significantly improve my lung function. so, today, i ve noticed a significant difference in my breathing. and i m doing more of what i want to do. so we re clear it doesn t replace a rescue inhaler for sudden symptoms. my doctor said symbicort is for copd, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. it should not be taken more than twice a day. symbicort may increase your risk of lung infections, osteoporosis, and some eye problems. tell your doctor if you have a heart condition or high blood pressure before taking it. my copd often meant i had to wait to do what i wanted to do. now i take symbicort, and it s significantly improves my lung function, starting within five minutes. symbicort has made a significant difference in my breathing. now more of my want-tos are can-dos. as your doctor about symbicort today. i got my first prescription free. call or go online to learn more. doing the kind of cirque du soleil thing? that was so amazing. i have to say, you could see people in the audience, their jaws just dropped. that was very gutsy of her. she was singing up side down and water falling. and twirling. we were wondering if there was a lip-sync involved, but we know they don t do it on the grammys. still to come on today, we re taking a trip. we re going to see prince harry, who is on a mission to raise money for the less fortunate. plus some pasta dishes that will score a touchdown with your super bowl guests. i needed more customers, so i got my nephew to build a website. i hired someone to make my website. five months ago. we are building a website by ourselves. announcer: there s an easier way. create your own small-business site with intuit websites. just choose a style that fits your business and customize, publish and get found in three easy steps. sweet. all from just $4.99 a month, get a 30-day free trial at intuit.com. after all the rich holiday food. and activity you were.? that attitude was honed over years of working in the entertainment industry. i didn t get it in syracuse. i was sort of like hi, thank you so much. but all of a sudden as you grow through your career and you have hundreds of millions of dollars of responsibility on your back and you see people are more interested in spinning things and lying and betrayal, you have to kind of get to the point. for me i chose, i want to be an honest truthful person. i don t want to be this other type. it got you someplace. it did. being honest and truthful is part of what you think is your success. your mom says, tell the truth, it s finally better. i m making a living off of it. on the other side of you is this woman who did come from syracuse, you can tell me why, you re so protective of your employees. you are you almost really mother hen them and you ve got that other side. where does that come from? well you know, i decided like by the time i was 25 i kind of bought into be the prettiest, smartest, fast, most successful, get married, do all of these things, and it failed me miserably. so i decided i wanted to know myself and i wanted to tell the truth and live life on my terms, not society s terms. so i m like that with them because he i feel that s what i wanted somebody to be for me, but that person wasn t there in the workplace for me. the authenticity with the world, that doesn t have as much authenticity as you feel it needs to have. and the connections create a lot of loyalty. they re young women when they come to me. i always say they re kind of chubby and wearing rock t-shirts from like the limited and converse sneakers, we re signing for their first apartment. we re teaching them about you re cosigning for the first apartment. you ve gone that far. i ve done probably like ten of them. and when my assistants graduate, i take them out and buy them beautiful bedding. there s nothing like a good sleep when you re working so much. not everybody is going to have an earth mother as a boss. what is your advice? in this book you make a big point of trying to give women good advice. and your road you talk about in the book is pretty tough. you went from a tiny town near syracuse. at one point you didn t have a home to be in. a rough situation in your book and you re pretty honest about that. into now being the head of this pr company, you got this tv show. you ve got now that s starting, a book out. on top of that, you re a single mother. so what s your advice? i mean, for me, i think it s just really important that they figure out that a lot of times women are told what to do instead of thinking what they want for themselves. one is deprogram yourself. forget about disney, forget about being the hottest, prettiest, youngest girl. learn how to listen to the voice inside yourself. know that you re magical and there s something for you to do that s as unique as your fingerprint. and if people are around you telling you it can t happen for you in places like that, consider them a crime against you and get away from them, even if it s your own parent. and move on to places and things and experiences that resonate and feel right with you. and if you have a hard time and something goes wrong in this plan, get back up and do it again, right? if i quit my job every time i felt bad or i wasn t good at my job or somebody said something mean to me, i don t think i would have ever been employed more than a month. and meantime you have this gorgeous little girl, ava. and 24 beautiful photograph. she looks like a little one of you. how would you say given all of that, we ve seen on tape, the balance works? well you know, i was going through a divorce and i became pregnant by someone else and i found myself by myself, having a baby. and so ava and i, we just connected so deeply. and i thought, i had a lot to give and a lot to learn. so you know, ava is always my first priority. even the way that i work is for ava. you know, i mean i want to make sure that i can afford to give her the best that i can. and we just kind of go through things together. and it s a very, very sweet, loving, amazing relationship to be in. kelly cutrone. you ve got a soft side. thank you. and your show, called kell on earth premieres tonight on bravo. coming up next, if you want to make a real meal for game day, pasta may be the way to score with super bowl party fans.
