good morning. the day after mother nature leaves her mark as the american east digs out from that monster snowstorm, as mudslides bury parts of california. but no rest for the weary, more trouble could be on the way. during the tea, sarah palin comes out swinging at the tea party calling for a revolution and fueling the fire behind america s newest political movement. now a year later i ve got to ask those reporters if all how s all that hopy changy stuff working out for you. this as president obama rallies fellow democrats and pledges not to back down from his agenda. and the world stage in five days, 92 countries come together in vancouver, the site of the 21st winter olympics. as the world anxiously awaits the start of the games, the athletes begin counting down to their moments of glory. today, sunday, february 7th, 2010. captions paid for by nbc-universal television good morning, everyone. welcome to today on a sunday morning. i m lester holt in vancouver this morning, site of the 2010 winter olympic games. and i m jenna wolfe inside studio 1-a. lester, it feels like the winter olympics should be held here on the east coast instead of vancouver, although new york and vancouver may be the only two cities without a ton of snow right now, correct? reporter: it s true. it was in the low 50s here yesterday. as i look over my shoulder here, i can still see it looks like a few flurries this morning. that s the first we ve seen of that. hopefully that means real serious snow in the mountains behind me. they ll need that plus just a little more to get things ready for the events i m sure. there may be a shortage of snow here. not here on the east coast where people are digging out from nearly 40 inches of snow in the hardest-hit areas in and around washington, d.c. the sheer weight of the snow caused at least two roofs to collapse, one at dulles international airport where they got a record 32 inches of snow and elsewhere around the east coast philadelphia got hit with a record 27 plus inches, our friends in baltimore, 26 inches. and believe it or not, more could be on the way. we re going to tell you when and where coming up in a little bit, lester. reporter: and then here in vancouver the olympics are just five days away now, but for the athletes here, the games represent years of mental and physical training. just ahead we ll take an inside look at what these men and women go through both physically and mentally in their quest for gold. was that you? were you the second guy going down there? reporter: no, no, that wouldn t have been me. just making sure. i like to get all the facts straight. then in our next half hour, getting around new york city is enough of a hassle, even with tubwa subways and taxis. imagine going from point a to point b by asking complete strangers to carry you, one man did that. we ll ask him why he did it. you re not going to believe how far he was able to get. you re lucky you weren t here this morning because there s a lot of carrying going on and obviously you were not involved in any of the planning. reporter: i can tell you people have been carrying me my whole career, so i get it, totally get it. you ve been waiting a long time to use that line, right? first the nor easter that buried much of the mid-atlantic in snow. mike is live in washington, d.c. where officials are still urging rez doensidents to stay off the. reporter: good morning. many areas saw record levels of snow. in the suburbs just west of baltimore and washington getting 30, 35 inches and more. the roads are treacherous, power is out for thousands and the big digout for this storm is expected to last for days. it was a storm that lived up to its hype. dubbed snowmageddon, the storm finally stopped late yesterday, but not after leaving many areas crippled. in washington no flights in and out of all three major airports. buses didn t run and metro trains stayed underground. at times the snow fell 3 inches an hour. it piled up on trees, snapping limbs and bringing down power lines. leaving thousands without electricity, with many still waiting this morning for the power to come back on. nbc s tom costello, snow bound in the d.c. suburbs, filed this report on skype. reporter: we lost all of our heat and our power at about 1:00 in the morning. it came back at 1:00 in the afternoon. by that point it dropped below 60 inside the house. reporter: in maryland some areas measured up to 40 inches of snow leaving roads impassable. in philadelphia crews worked more than 24 hours straight. they are working very hard. over 600 personnel, 350 pieces of equipment from a number of agencies across city government. reporter: at dulles airport, an airplane hangar partially collapsed. back in washington, a 100-year-old church was demolished by a fallen tree. in new jersey, blizzard conditions at the shore. i m getting sustained wind gusts of 35 miles an hour, but gusts 45 miles an hour at times and the snow is blowing and certainly the visibility has been reduced. reporter: even the presidential motorcade was affected when a branch suddenly fell on an suv filled with photographers. the president had already safely passed by. some made the best of it. they met up at washington s dupont circle for a snowball showdown. you are now looking live at reagan national airport where they re still digging out and can t say when flights are going to resume. the same goes for dulles international, baltimore-washington international. philly says they hope to have some flights coming in and out by later today. of course, jenna, the bad news, more storm, more snow on the way for tuesday on the east coast. right now, though, it makes for a beautiful scene. mike, thank you. the west coast had weather problems of its own. heavy rain storms caused mudslides and the evacuation of several hundred homes. more on that from chris jansing. reporter: it happened in an instant, a mile-long torrent of mud, rocks and trees came barrelling down a collapsing hillside in suburban los angeles overnight trapping people in their homes. it was just gushing water. you couldn t get out. reporter: mudslides hit with such force they knocked over barricades. mud several feet deep after intense thunderstorms. it was an absolute torrent down here. cars rolling down the street at 5:00 in the morning. the whole house was shaking. reporter: crews worked to dig out houses and cars, though it wasn t always easy getting there. this fire truck was stuck in rushing water for almost an hour. by late saturday, residents of more than 800 homes were under voluntary evacuation orders. the hardest hit areas had been charred by september s devastating station fire, leaving the hillsides vulnerable to mudslides. the problem for these burn areas, it only takes half of an inch of rain in an hour to cause the possibility of a mudslide. we ve had about a total of 4 to 5 inches in some spots in the mountains. reporter: in canyons around los angeles, crews took advantage of breaks in the rain to clear narrow roads. this road was closed most of the day on saturday, but finally reopened late in the afternoon. but there could be more work ahead. heavy rains are in the forecast later in the week, so tired residents who spent hours cleaning up from one assault by mother nature may have to prepare for the next. for today, chris jansing, nbc news, los angeles. snow in the east and heavy rains in the west, has the worst of the weather passed? take me across and we re done? yes, yes. people were actually doing it. i couldn t believe it! i found myself really enjoying the chitchat. two children, married. what are you cooking for dinner, anything good? please don t drop me. it seemed as though people actually wanted to carry me. oh, my gosh. you don t see this every day in new york. guys, come on. this is awesome. new yorkers are nice. i love ending it right there, mark joins us here in the studio this morning. mark, good morning. good morning. i guess i should start by i was going to say the way you got here today was pretty interesting as well because apparently this isn t over yet. you re really into the carrying. let s show people at home how nice we here at the today show are you comfortable? i m very comfortable. you came as far as our plaza and then you requested that was in my rider. not easy, but i was game and i carried you all the way in. thankfully you re not heavier than you are because you got a lot of people to carry you. jenna, that was very impressive. your strength was intimidating. we ll get to that a little? a little bit. i know you wanted to see if new yorkers were really that nice. what were your expectations going into this? i wasn t sure. i was doing this comedy project by traveling across america sponsored by the ford motor company talking to americans and they still have this idea that new york was an unfriendly place. i wanted to disprove the mayth. so you thought new yorkers would do this? i did. they have heart. they re a little hard on the exterior but i have 155 people pick me up, a stranger, i think speaks volumes. how did people react when you approached them? while we re all wonderful people we re not the most approachable. some were a little taken back but new york is such a they re used to bizarre things. some people no hesitation. i m carrying a strange dude, this is not out of the ordinary. no one has ever asked me. who carried you, men, women. men, women, i had nine musical theater students carry me six blocks while singing lady gaga. no one filed a citizen s arrest, nothing like that. no, no, not at all. everyone was really nice. the only time i was worried was up on the upper west side some intoxicated columbia students wanted to carry me but i had a helmet and i was okay. i understand at one point you were stuck because not everybody carried you and you tweeted some people. i did. i was stuck for two hours. where were you, jenna? exactly. i tweeted some people and within an hour people showed up and carried me. so what does this say about new york overall? two things. i think it says new yorkers have heart and the second thing is getting carried by strangers in new york is often a better means of transportation than the mta. okay. real quick, do you know what you re working on next? i m working on this project where i have to have the government behind me, but i thought it would be interesting to ship myself overseas in a crate. let me tell you who s not going to help you with that one. lester and jenna. oh, come on. no, you re on your own. it would be good video content. great story, very interesting. thank you so much for being here. now let s send it over to lester in vancouver. this morning we begin an olympic series called today s northern exposure. the largest city ever to host the winter games, vancouver is a jewel on the pacific coast of british columbia. there s plenty of sites and scenes here. samantha brown is here with a look. good morning. good morning. i could carry you. well after the show i might need it it s so early in the morning here. you know, i love being here but the one bad thing is everyone will know how great this place is because i ve been coming for years. i love when you come and see all these skyscrapers thaingd it s a big, sophisticated city but there s a casual sight. they hike, they bike, they ski, they kayak, sometimes in the same day. so as a visitor here you really tap into that energy, that exhileration. and some of those things, here we are downtown on the waterfront, you can walk a few minutes to stanley park. which is the jewel of the city, a thousand acre park. it s a peninsula surrounded on three sides by water, rent a bike, go along the sea wall, which is a five-mile path. you ve got wilderness on one side, the waterfront on the other, snow-capped mountains in the distance. it s absolutely surreal. i have taken that ride, it s breath-taking. i haven t been to granville island. the public market is where you can really taste the bounty of british columbia all under one roof. there s seafood, there s prepared foods, baked goods. my advice would be go there, eat your way through it, then go to stanley park and work it off with a bike ride. in a few hours we ll hear the buzz of seaplanes operate. some of those planes will take you to victoria, with a half hour flight. about an hour and a half ferry ride. it has a lot of european charm. it also has a different climate than vancouver. it s warmer, more sun, so they have flowers year round. that s what they boast. so even in february. it s a very romantic place to be as well. one of the places that will be scene for all the downhill skiing events is whistler. there s whistler and black home two hours from here. when the snow goes away, it becomes one of the top destinations for downhill mountain biking. talk about an adrenaline rush. you really don t even have to be a pro to do it. beginners can do the downhill biking as well. i would highly suggest taking the bunny slope. it is a very difficult sport to take on. also at whistler they have a zip line tour. great, great thing to do. go through the trees, soar like an eagle. a little terrifying but kind of beautiful. before we let you go, this is a pit stop for us because the today show is moving across the water to grouse mountain. you can ski, but also on top of grouse mountain when the snow goes away are grizzly bears. there s a wildlife refuge and this is where the orphaned bears grinder and kula are. they re not there right now, they re in their dens so unfortunately you might not be able to see them, but they come out. but, again, 15 minutes away. vancouver has a mountain you can ski on. samantha, great to have you here. you re a great tour guide. you didn t even have to carry me, you just guided me. up next, which super bowl commercials will you talk about come monday morning? that thing and that hipster voice, the technology is great for getting the mouth to move but if you think about it, the original babies are like four years old now. this is a whole new crop of babies. you know, it s like the oldest joke around, but you can t resist, a talking baby. and it wears down your worries about investing in the stock market. sure, sure. next is monster.com and monster.com usually has somewhat controversial ads and very funny ads. this one a fiddle-playing beaver. what does that have to do with monster? i think a little more exciting and funnier and surprising. a lot of celebrities, a lot of movies, a lot of tv references. watch the game, watch the commercials, it s going to be a good night. barbara, thank you so much. up next, inside the mind of the olympian, but first these messages. give a book with your voice on every page. and when it seems impossible to love you more. i do. good night, evan. - i love you. - awww, i love you too. a cuddly bear that answers when you talk. or a card with a dvd that celebrates your love story. gifts that will mean something long after the day is done. i love you only at your hallmark gold crown store. i love you (announcer) right now, all over the country, discover customers are getting five percent cashback bonus on travel. it pays to get more, it pays to discover. three decadent flavors. 60 calories. it s me o clock. time for jell-o. for many athletes, the olympic games is a lifetime of sacrifice for a very brief moment of glory, but the road to the olympic games is one these olympians say is definitely worth the trip. i ve never been to the olympics. i don t know what to expect so i ve been kind of picking the brains of my coaches or fellow athletes that have been there before and trying to say, you know, what if this happens or where do you go after this. when i m going down the track, one of the things that stands out to me the most is just the finesse of it. everybody thinks it s this crazy speed, adrenaline junky sport, but really it has finesse and rhythm and dance and flow. once you get into that rhythm and you feel yourself just gliding down the track and picking up speed, there s nothing like it in the world. it s incredible. the typical training day for me is a little different because i m a mother of a 2-year-old daughter. so for me it s wake up, make sure that my daughter is fed and taken care of. then when she goes down for her nap, there s about a three-hour break where i m able to fit in my workout. the best piece of advice that i ve received is probably just to enjoy the moment. enjoy it all because it s all going to be gone in the glimpse of an eye. i kind of thought after 2002 that i might retire but i just said i ll take it a year at a time. i was still having good results and enjoying myself and my body was healthy and i was able to make ends meet, so i decided i ll keep going. i just stick to my plan in preparation for the olympics. you know, keep doing what got me here. i feel like the monkey is a little off my back winning a medal in the last olympics. i don t feel pressure from anyone really. for the training, we do a combination of kind of a track athlete and a weight lifter. so we do a lot of olympic lifts and a lot of sprinting. i m a soldier, i m in the national guard, and i feel like it s a double honor to be a soldier and an athlete for the u.s. you know, winning a medal is you know, representing is a feeling in itself but to win a medal for your country is, it s undescribable, it really is. joining me now with more insight into the preparations and pressures of an olympic athlete is 1998 olympic gold medallist and author of when turtles fly nikki stone. it s great to see you. you won the first gold in aerial skiing for the united states. you obviously knew your sport. what didn t you know. what advice did you get about the olympics in general?
