you know, i forgot the question. i m still sticking with the drinking the beer on the porch t you because you re too young. will it attract mosquitos? it does apparently. the more you drink, the more mosquitos you ll attract? it takes a lot of sun light and focus it into a small area and use that thermal energy to heat up an engine to create nice, clean solar power. the folks at eagle mount spent over $100,000 heating their pool because special needs folks need the pool at 89 degrees. they re going to save a lot. this is amazing. this will cover half their power bill. j.d., thank you so much. very happy to do it, absolutely. it has a death ray look about it but it s really used for good. very positive thing. j.d., thank you so much. thank you. and also back here we have folks from murdoch s. let s open that bad boy up. they have $30,000 worth of donations from a carry-on trailer and metal gates, $11,000 worth of hay. the horses have to eat. king cutter tractor yard rake, boots, jackets and shirts, all thanks to murdoch s ranch and home supply. they re home grown here in bozeman, montana. thank you so much. we appreciate that. let s check your weather, see what s happening. we have a risk of strong storms today that will be stretching from the plains all the way to the east coast and there could be hail, tornadoes in the north central plains, upper midwest. on the radar you can see these storms are firing up, moving through iowa, heading into illinois. rainfall amounts 1 to 2 inches. some areas may pic as we head into the afternoon, there is a possibility we could see thunderstorms develop and some of those to be strong or severe. until that time, it should stay and that s your latest weather. more from bozeman, montana, and eagle mount later. natalie? announcer: today s be well, be healthy is brought to you by cheerios. 100% natural whole grain oats, one single gram of sugar per serving. sos, someone please help me this morning on be well, be healthy part of our diet sos, your diet dilemmas. how much protein should you be getting every day and the benefits of a raw food diet. joy bauer, a registered dietician. as always some great questions. corinne is with us from skype. what s your question? how much protein do we need a day? great question. so here is the simple calculation. you want to take your weight in pounds and half it. and that s the number that you need in terms of grams. so, for example, let s say a woman weighs 140 pounds, half of that is 70. she needs about 70 grams of protein per day. now pregnant women and serious athletes need a little bit more, but for the rest of the population, that s a really good ballpark number. and there s no problem getting that much. when you think about a palm-sized piece of chicken or fish or even lean red meat gives you between 20 and 25 grams and most people eat we re probably getting a lot more than that. double that for lunch and dinner. there are so many great vegetarian sources but half your weight in pounds. i hope that helps. no difference between men and women then? it s a total weight calculation? right. men are larger so normally they ll need more than women. again, athletes and pregnant women need more as well. okay. thank you to corinne. a call from lori out of kalamazoo, michigan. caller: i know all fats have the same amount of calories. i was wondering do we steel need to remain under the same total fat intake in grams recommended by cardiologists as long as we account for all the calories? okay. that s a very interesting question and the answer is going to vary depending upon what part we tackle. so when it comes to weight loss, your weight does not discriminate between the bad fat and the good fat because all fat, whether it comes from red meat or from heart healthy fats found in nuts and seeds, one gram equals nine calories. so if you excessively eat fat from any of those sources, you re going to pack on the pounds. on the other hand, the type of fat matters tremendously when it comes to health. because we know the bad fat, the saturated fat in dairy and the meat and poultry skin is going to jack up your cholesterol levels. that s the ldl. 4 l for lousy. on the other hand, the plant-based sources, the olive oil, avocado, nuts and seeds, these things help to enhance your overall health. so how much you should be eating. health organizations say between 20% and 30% of your overall calories should be coming from fat but i say as long as you minimize the bad fat and you account for the calories and your weight s in check, it really doesn t matter if you slightly fall below that or above that. just focus on the good stuff. and the lean meats and the lean poultry, all of that to have more of the good stuff. again, that s protein so back to our first question. okay. thank you to lori. finally, an e-mail from claudia out of medford, new jersey. i ve been practicing bikram yoga, the hot yoga for six months, and it was recommended i start a raw food diet. currently i have a well balanced diet but would like to increase the quality of my health. is there a true benefit to eating only raw food? hot yoga can do a lot to your body. and kudos for being so passionate about her health and wellness. but i don t think there s enough scientific scientific data to support the effort someone who have to put into following a raw food diet. they follow a vegan diet for the most part, a strict vegetarian diet. they believe when you cook these plant-based foods you re destroying the nutrition and losing the plant endimes that help to you digest and absorb the food. while it s true that some nutrients are lost when you cook food especially overcooked like witt minimum c and b, lycopene becomes more available when you cook them. so what i would say is go out of your way to increase your produce. i mean, the more the better, but it s absolutely fine to have some cooked, to have some raw, and just really vary it around. and a well-balanced diet, sounds like she has all of that going. she s already healthy so that s fabulous. as you said, kudos to her. that yoga is hard core. it s hard core. you need to replenish a lot of water after that, too. it s great, though. joy bauer, thanks. head to todayshow.com and submit your questions for joy. if you want to take our quiz text the word well to 46833. turning beach casual into evening chic with the hottest cover-up. but up next, keeping your family safe this summer with new backyard gadgets. sharing art is the highest calling for me. but without my health i wouldn t be able to do anything. the last ball. everybody asks me about what s the most memorable thing both in beijing and athens and sharing that moment with kari because we sacrificed so much together. when we started as a team we made it happen. and any of the gold mean more to you? you get that a lot. a gold is a gold. definitely the first one just because we were so young and nervous and we were up against a good brazilian team but the second just doing back-to-back, knowing we ve done it before. we ve accomplished so much in such a short time. i mean, they re both amazing feats. as i was reading through some of the book, you literally grew up on the sand, russell beach, santa monica pier inc californi. tell me about some of your memories, childhood and just being there as your mom, barbara, and your father, butch, were volleyball players as well. yeah, my mom came from a tennis family. so i got to dabble in all these sports, tennis. i played soccer and did volleyball. there s no better playground than the beach. i grew up right there at santa monica pier, watched it get knocked down during storms, watched it get rebuilt, just watched the whole santa monica transform and had many people watch me out there and karch karai was out there so a lot of the great players played at the beach. i was a rug rat just roaming around, boogie boarding and just living care free. and learning your craft very well. and you do dig deep in this book as well and you talk about some less than happy moments in your life. you talk about your parents dealing with alcoholism and, in fact, reached out to your are that you were writing was about all of this and he said whatever i did, i own it. how is your relationship with your dad now? they were recovering alcoholics, as far as i understand, when you were 15 years old. correct. my dad stopped drinking first and my mom had to battle it but she got sober and they were sober my dad still doesn t drink and before my mom died she had been sober for over i mean it was about 15 years. so it was i mean, it takes away a little bit of your childhood, but i think every family has a story to tell and these are the ups and downs that i hope people will read my book and say, oh, my gosh, she went through the same thing and this is how her family got through it or as a kid, oh, this is what she did to overcome it. did it make you a tougher competitor? does the beach volleyball really help you go through that period in your life? i think plays sports, volleyball, soccer took my mind off of what was happening at home. you come home and, you know, when people drink, they can become different people. but once they get healthy, our family is loving, caring, great support system. a great relationship all around. yeah. kari walsh had another baby. now a 1-year-old and a 1-month old the twins. sundance and joseph exactly. congratulations. and i hope i look that happy. i hope that s coming up in your future as well as more volleyball. i know you re playing with nicole, your new partner. we wish you a lot of luck and are we going to see you in london?
