winning. now sheen says he has some regrets and is a changed man. we ll hear all about that. then, savannah, we all know you are beautiful. you are gorgeous. where is this going? you never told me you double, you moon light as a model. oh, my. yes. she got in on fashion week this week in new york learning how to walk the runway like some of the top runway models. did you have a good time? it was really fun. i mean, there was absolutely no i didn t know what i was doing. all i got to say is, holy hair extension. but anyway, it was really fun. and i am super awkward. it was pretty exciting for me. kind of a girlie dream to get your hair done and makeup and all that stuff. it was really fun not really a manly dream. what s your dream? not that. okay. think about that. in the meantime we ll turn to natalie morales over at the news desk with a check of the news. good morning, savannah and carl. good morning, everyone. what appeared to be a possible break in the search for missing utah mother susan powell may have been premature. nbc s miguel almaguer has the very latest from west valley city, utah. miguel? reporter: natalie, good morning. even though investigators have yet to unearth any bones, they say there is a 50/50 chance they have found the remains of susan powell. search teams with cadaver dogs and atvs made the discovery in the utah desert. the shallow grave that investigators say was recently disturbed. but after a day of digging through the site, investigators say they have found no human bones, no body fragments, no clothing. still, police say two different sets of cadaver dogs have hit on something. they are smelling something and it s human decomposition. reporter: this week s discovery comes 30 miles from where susan s husband josh powell told police he took their children camping overnight in the snowstorm the night susan vanished. while josh has denied any involvement in his wife s disappearance, police say he won t cooperate with investigators and remains the only person of interest. today susan s father joins detectives at the utah search site. now they re here with a large contingent doing the search and i just felt i needed to be closer. reporter: calling this week s discovery, quote, what we ve been looking for, detectives caution there is more work to be done in the utah desert. it s still unclear what cadaver dogs may have found or who may have been at the site not so long ago. they said that they can tell there s definitely been a disturbance there in the recent little bit. reporter: a recent disturbance and an unfolding mystery in the utah desert. investigators say they ll be back at the search site later on today looking for human remains. meantime, josh powell, susan s husband, says he, quote, hopes they find his missing wife. natalie? miguel almaguer in west valley city, utah, thank you. television evangelist pat robertson is under fire for some comments he made about alzheimers disease on his 700 club program, giving this response to a caller whose friend was dating other women while his wife was ill with alzheimer s. here s the loved one. this is the woman or man that you have loved for 20, 30, 40 years. and suddenly that person is gone. they re gone. they are gone. if you respect that vow, till death do us part, this is a kind of death. robertson went on to say that he encourages the spouse to divorce before dating again. the alzheimer s foundation of america responded saying that his comments feed misconceptions about the disease. federal officials have now pinpointed the source of a deadly listeria outbreak to a single cantaloupe farm in colorado. jensen farms has recalled its entire harvest of melons. authorities say no other farms have been implicated in the deadly bacteria that has killed at least two people and sickened 22 others in seven states. on thursday the first lawsuit was filed against jensen farms in connection with the outbreak. investigators believe an engine room explosion was to blame for thursday s deadly cruise ship fire in norway. two crew members died and eight people were injured. more than 200 passengers had to be evacuated from the ship as black smoke billowed from inside. the first living marine to receive the medal of honor for service in afghanistan praised his fallen comrades at a white house ceremony on thursday. president obama presented the nation s highest military award to 23-year-old retired sergeant dakota meyer of kentucky. meyer ran repeatedly through enemy fire while wounded to help save the lives of 36 fellow troops. on a different note, some animals make great pets, but no matter how cute, some just don t. meet rambo. bill mcdonald found him as a baby near death on his door step so he took him in and he nursed him to health even though veterinarians had warned him not to. but the mcdonalds didn t want to release the little buddy into the wilds just yet. seems even the family dog likes him. just wait until he raids the refrigerator. let s go back outside to savannah and carl. thank you. now let s check this chilly weather with maria larosa from the weather channel. good morning, guys. it is a chilly you know we ve had a lot of floridia in the crowd. you guys are from tampa. clearly you watched the forecast because you are ready. how does it feel? a little chilly. all right. we have a couple more chilly mornings, but florida really the one spot that s going to be kind of toasty over the next day or so. we have a few showers and thunderstorms possible there. but also in the mid section we ll continue to be a little unsettled for the next few days. meanwhile, it s all about the high pressure settling in the great lakes and the northeast that will bring those frosty temperatures, talking lows in the 20s and 30s, highs only into the 50s and 60s today but plenty of sunshine. chance of showers and thunderstorms also today in the we are getting our first taste of fall this morning. if you are heading out to work or school or the golf course, morning sunshine gives way to afternoon cl natalie, back inside to you. thank you, maria. this morning on today s daily dose the importance of early detection. when it comes to our health some conditions are out of our control but there are some warning signs you should know to prevent other conditions from becoming life threatening. dr. nancy snyderman is our chief medical editor. most importantly, you say the rule of thumb is get to your doctor every year. yes. i used to not think routine evaluations were important but now i think you need to at least check in for simple things like blood pressure, weight. are you happy? are you doing well? whether it s a nurse or a doctor have someone you can check in with. let s start with oral health. i think a lot of people ignore it or don t think of it as importantly and how it can impact the rest of your overall health. and speaking of gums. this may be one of the best examples of how the knee bone is connected to the thigh bone. everything has something to do with it. exactly. so that your teeth and your gums particularly are important. so this morning i wanted to concentrate on something called gingivitis which is something your dentist checks for every year in children and adults. the classic sign that your gums might not be healthy is if they re red, tender. they may have bleeding when you floss your teeth. right. any of those symptoms should warrant sort of a heads up. sometimes even simple bad breath can be a hint. why is it important? because it can link not only to the idea that you might lose a tooth and if you lose a tooth you end up losing the amount of density of your bone in your jaw or in your cheek. but it can also lead to heart health. so you must, must floss your teeth. and i think at least two times a day. and i m a big believer in the mechanical tooth brushes. and getting to your dentist how often then? at least once a year. and for children, as soon as that first baby tooth starts, get your children accustomed to seeing the dentist. right. for little things. even a wash rag in a baby s mouth is enough to sort of get a child on the right course. a little rubbing the teeth. yes. next is depression. mental health is key to an overall healthy body. recent studies actually find depression starts earlier even in childhood. yes. so what are some of the signs of clinical depression versus, you know, that every day the blues. the reason i think this is important is because we still stigmatize it. i ll say oh, natalie, snap out of it. you have so much to be thankful for. what s wrong? right. but the hallmark for depression versus just having a lousy day is hopelessness. people say it s like being in a steel can where you just can t claw yourself up the sides. if you re irritable, you no longer like to do the things you like to do, and i mean reduced sex drive, like nothing brings you satisfaction anymore, sometimes fatigue, you ll hear women say i just don t want to get out of bed in the morning. or difficulty concentrating. any of those alone may not be enough. but put them together and it s important. and for you and i who have children, you have to really look at transitional times in a child s life. preadolescence can really become depressed and when you see it as a parent you may not notice it. but changing grades, friends at school. hormones. all of that stuff. we even know that inutero we can start to pick up on depressed babies based on how they respond to music and what their overall environment is like. this is not something to be worried about. it s not something to be chastis chastised. it is really something to understand. because there are phenomenal treatments including therapy. and it s usually lower levels of seratonin that triggers depression? the whole neuro transmitters and a lot of times it s medicine. increasingly we believe it s medicine and some kind of therapy. let s move on to cancer. unfortunately very hard to detect some types of cancer so early detection really is the key. it s controversial. so i threw this whole thing together under the big tent. right. because we know some cancers are very curable like childhood leukemia. what i really want people to understand is if you look at this laundry list of stuff, it can change. sometimes people just say i just feel lousy. i feel fatigued. if you find a lump in your neck that is growing and not going away or a lump in your breast, obviously we know that s time to go in. sometimes people interestingly drop weight and they re not on a diet. that can be a problem. any change in bowel and bladder, blood in your urine, blood in your stool, it s a reason to go in. for smokers, increasingly we know for people exposed to second-hand smoke, a cough. so i want people to know it s not about a disease specific laundry list. it s about suddenly, you know what? i m different. it s lasted more than two weeks. nothing is making it go away. at least a reason to go in and be checked. right. and you said any change in your overall health. right. finally arthritis. yes. i think a lot of people think of arthritis as something that you maybe will get later on in life but a lot of younger adults are getting arthritis as well. the number one disability in this country. if you want a great resource the arthritis foundation has a phenomenal website where you can go for help. and this may be one time to really intervene early. for children who get arthritis there are great biologics and a lot of belief that the pain and stiffness and swelling and redness can be different in kids than it is in adults but a lot of arthritis doctors think the earlier you treat this the more you can reduce symptoms. most people at some point will say my fingers or my toes are a little stiff. right. as baby boomers age, this is going to be one of the things they ll complain about. but it affects children and adults and there are phenomenal therapies. all right. well, dr. nancy snyderman, that s all the time we have for today but thank you as always. still to come more of our exclusive interview with charlie sheen after a chaotic start to the year. the actor is opening up again about what he would have done differently. up next, there is a super model in our midst. hum. who could she be? savannah struts her stuff on the catwalk right after this. don t be nervous. why settle for a one-note cereal? get more with honey bunches of oats. four nutritious grains come together for more taste, more texture, more healthy satisfaction. have a bowl of happy. yep! (mom) i m so proud of you. the bus is here, gotta go mom. okay hunny, have a great day. look in your bag, made you something. (announcer) it s more than just that great peanut taste, choosing jif is a simple way to show someone how much you care. choosey moms, choose jif. maybe not. v8 v-fusion juice gives them a full serving of vegetables plus a full serving of fruit. but it just tastes like fruit. pretty darned low considering it s a chip, yes. vegetables, fruit pouches? i think it s always hard to think about what you can really pack in a lunch box. right. here are good examples. these are cool and i love the packaging. this is like apple sauce on steroids. they re fruit and vegetable purees. they don t have to be refrigerated. this is revolution foods mashups in a variety of fruit and vegetables. this is go-go squeeze. both of these companies i like a lot. yummy. whatever that flavor was. very good. they re all good. okay. i wanted to be sensitive to the allergy kids. right. this is enjoy life, an allergen-free line, free of dairy and wheat and tree nuts and peanuts and soy. all of the usual suspects. great. these bars have been out a while but they re newly formulated and it has an improved taste. kids seem to like the best the caramel apple, the very berry, and the cocoa loco. this must be the cocoa loco. that s good. chewy. they re totable. good choice. really good. okay. and then over here, this is for this is like the super, super duper snack of all time, right? right. not all kids like hummus but if your kid does, take advantage of it. this is super hummus. they integrate soybeans together with chick peas when they puree, which increases the protein and i love this. it comes in plain and a garlic spinach. parents loved the garlic spinach. sounds delicious. i think if you pack the hummus you need to pack the crackers as well to go with it. gluten free, lentil crackers from the mediterranean snack food company. they have more protein and more fiber and you don t have to be gluten free to love these. they re crunchy, hard, and delicious. seems like more companies are doing that with the legumes. it s great. more nutritious. trisquits i love. simple, wholesome ingredients. low in salt. whole grain. look how cute they are. mini trisquits. greek yogurt has more protein but this is so kid friendly because it has a little pouch with granola you can add in. kids will love that. brings it to the next level. exactly. instead of soda and juice boxes check out lacroix sparkling water. this is the most delicious water, flavored water with no sugar, no artificial sweeteners, that i ve tasted. all right. i didn t quite eat my way through the whole segment. joy bauer, as always, thank you. coming up next, no more tiger blood for charlie sheen. the actor says he has turned over a new leaf. more of our exclusive interview right after this. bonus! so you earn 50% more cash. according to research, everybody likes more cash. well, almost everybody. would you like 50% more cash? it s really a lot calmer. it s a lot mellower. yeah. that was a time when, you know, what happened, i don t really know what happened. it was one of those things where, boy, the planets were either aligned to perfectly or imperfectly, but i just i said some stuff and then it it caught such traction globally and instantly that i couldn t i couldn t really put out the fire, you know, so i had to kind of keep fueling it. all it was was why do you think you could put it out? you were in control of what you were saying and you were the one granting the interviews and appearances. sure, sure. why couldn t you manage to put the brakes on it? because it took on a life of its own and people grabbed on to these catch phrases, these metaphors as it were. and they just ran with it. and it seemed like it caught people at a time when they needed something different to root for, to or to get inside of and feel the energy. you know? it s, again, impossible to explain how something like that can happen. i don t think it can ever happen again. what was it like to be in the middle of it? could you even get your arms around how big it became? did you understand no. how many people were talking about you? no, no. it was like being shot out of a cannon into another cannon. and then just shot out of that one. yeah. it was like one, from one moment to the next. i didn t know what was going to happen. it was pretty exciting. then the whole scary or exciting?
