that does it for us today. see you at 9:00, local news update in 25 minutes. have a great day. good morning. no nobel surpri. the stunning announcement that president obama won the nobel peace prize catches even the white house off guard. this morning what the prestige and the pressure may mean for his presidency. sudden impact. the moment a tsunami struck in the south pacific caught on tape. a surge of water sweeps up cars. the dramatic video reminding us of mother nature s incredible power. and holding on a photo of a little girl clinging to her daddy as he prepares to go off to iraq shines a spotlight on the pain of war and separation. and in a today exclusive, we ll meet the little girl who s touching so many hears today, saturday, october 10th, 2009. captions paid for by nbc-universal television good morning, everyone. welcome to today on a saturday morning. i m lester holt. i m amy robach. the announcement that president obama won the nobel peace prize after only nine months in office surprised everyone but, most notabl notably, the president himself. he pretty much said as much. the president had been in office less than two weeks when nominations were due, but in spite of that, the nobel committee voted unanimously to award him the prize. coming up, what it may mean for the president s initiatives and the fuel it is giving his critics. a new mountain of evidence released in the case of florida mom casey anthony including pictures of her partying and getting a tattoo after her daughter disappeared. but there is still a lot prosecutors don t know abwhat happened to caylee. we ll have the latest coming up. the dramatic upswing in swine flu. the centers for disease control now reporting almost as many children have died of swine flu as died of seasonal flu all of last year. this morning, we are going to talk with an expert about how the virus is predding and why so many people are still refusing to get vaccinated. on a much lighter note, what do marge simpson, rush limbaugh and conan o brien all have in common? hmm. we will have the answer for you a little later on. you ve stumped me and i m not sure i want to know. might be frightening. right? first we want to begin with a stunning announcement that came friday that president obama had won the nobel peace prize. nbc s white house correspondent savannah guthrie is here with us this morning in studio. good morning. good morning, lester. suffice it to say this was a white house caught off guard. they bent over backwards yesterday not to crow about it. the question this morning, whether this unexpected international honor will be a political blessing or a curse. president barack obama for reporter: it was the announcement that stunned the world. the white house said no one there even knew the president had been nominated. i am both surprised and deeply humbled by the decision of the nobel committee. reporter: the committee said president obama received the prize for his international diplomacy and nuclear nonproliferation efforts. we would like to enhance, to support what he is trying to do, what he is trying to achieve. reporter: obama joins a group that includes icons like mother teresa and nelson mandela. the president said he didn t deserve to be in such prestigious company but welcomed the prize s affirmation of american leadership. and that is why i will accept this award as a call to action, a call for all nations to confront the common challenges of the 21st century. reporter: obama is the third u.s. president to win while in office. he s not first winner to provoke controversy. some say the award is more about the president s potential than his accomplishments. i think the president has commitment, he has priority, but he s facing galactic problems. reporter: with his presidency illn its early stages, it remains to be seen whether obama can deliver on the ambitious global vion he s laid out. and in a bit of irony, the peace prize came on a day the president huddled once again with his war council, seeking a way forward in afghanistan. i am the commander in chief of a country that s responsible for ending a war and working in another theater to confront a ruthless adversary that directly threatens the american people and our allies. and that was an interesting moment in his speech. the president seeming to want to remind everyone that he will work for peace but he will use force when necessary. will he publicly accept the award and take the money? the plans are for him to go to oslo, norway, and accept the award. he ll take the money but give it to charity. thanks, savannah. amy? thanks so much. joe scarborough, host of morning joe, joins us with more on the president s surprise peace prize. i want the money, by the way. let s get that out front. full disclosure as we head into this. thisurprised a lot of people, including the president himself. surprised you. a pretty strong reaction when you heard the news. actually, i laughed. and i laughed because, you know, we were preparing for the show overnight, as you know, we do this type of show early in the morning, you re constantly on your blackberry. and my executive producer e-mailed me and said barack obama won the nobel prize. and my response was, for what? and i think that was the response not only of conservatives but of a lot of foreign policy analysts, as well. you realize it s like giving an emmy award to the today show not for what it did last year but what it just may do this year. it s interesting because the president did not seek out this award. oh, sure. the white house didn t know he was being nominated. yet the president is getting some criticism for getting this award. is it fair to criticize him given his lack of a role in no, no. and there s not a whole lot of significance to it. there aren t a lot of really good reasons to be upset. in fact, you could actually sit back and say, okay, let s figure out a way and i m sure the white house is doing this how do we leverage this to help america? and if the president can leverage the nobel peace prize to help himself and help the country, i think that s good for all of us. i don t know tha iran s gng to change their position on nuclear facilities or north korea, but who knows, maybe some european allies would be swayed and that would b good for all of us. what about in terms of the nobel committee and choosing barack obama as its winner? some people have suggested this, perhaps, is a rebuke of president bush. yeah. i think most people would believe that s the case. in fact, i was thinking this morning driving over here, perhaps i should really just put george w. bush s face on the actual nobel peace prize medal because it certainly had an impact not so much with al gore, though that was a part of it al gore rebuked george bush s policies not only on global warming but also on iraq very early on but also jimmy carter in 2002 and the lead up to the iraq war. she was very outspoken. he received peace prize at that time. i think most observers understand this award this year is likewise a rebuke of george w. bush s policies. we heard president obama in the rose garden yesterday responding to receiving this award. obviously, this puts expectations at a pretty high level for him. right. did he respond appropriately? kind of tough thing, you didn t know you were getting. it would be like the heisman trophy before you play the first game, and i m sorry, most quarterbacks would want the heisman trophy. there s nothing wrong with a president getting this. and again, maybe we can use it for our own advantage. but you can t blame the guy for people throwing medals at him. yeah. and again, the really the only downside so this may be a political downside to barack obama because even some supporters have said this in the past 24 hours. the expectations were already so high. now he s won a nobel peace prize. the second he sends more troops into afghanistan, which he s going to have to do, they re going to be critics that are going to say he s betrayed the spirit of the nobel peace prize. the second he stands up to iran on nuclear weapons, which he s going to have to do, the same criticism. i m sure if you ask david ax axelrod and others in the white house, they would say thanksor the honor, we would have appreciated it one or two years down the road. you don t think this will have influence on iran, ahmadinejad won t care. in terms of how the president goes with afghanistan in the future, does this influence his decision at all? it does not. it signifies that barack obama is extraordinarily popular and that s a good thing. what we haven t seen, and you can look at all the polling, the german marshall fund did a poll a couple months back that shows virtually no change in attitudes towards u.s. policy globally. perhaps this nobel peace prize and his extraordinary popularity across the globe over the years may start to have an imct. i will say, though, it has brought two divergent forces together. both the taliban and rush limbaugh are one accord that barack obama should not have received this award, so perhaps he may be able to heal the earth after all. i m sure rush will thank you for that. rush said it himself. i mean, he s a uniter, not a divider, bringing us together. joe scarborough, thanks so much. let s check the rest of the headlines, back to savannah guthrie at the news desk. good morning. dozens of people are waking up homeless in kentucky after a tornado roared through the state friday. the twister reached 118 miles an hour hitting casey county about 60 miles southwest of lexington. several homes and farm buildings were destroyed. officials say there are no reports of serious injuries. and major flooding in little rock had firefighters rescuing children from a local day care center after days of heavy rain, parts of arkansas and texas continue to be underwater this morning. in san antonio, some roads and interstates are under water aftertorms there. the fbi has released video showing the strong, deadly tsunami that struck america samoa last week. waves rush in and violently toss cars in a parking lot. it was taken on the morning the tsunami struck from a stationary security camera at the fbi. 183 people died in that tsunami. a terrible accident in florida, a man who thought there was an intruder in his home mistakenly shot and killed his fiance. john tav et of winter springs florida told police he thought his live-in fiance nancy dins more was asleep in bed. authorities say this appears to be authorities say this appears to be a tragic accident. no charges have been filed. the two were supposed to be married today. a south carolina man is recovering this morningfter being attacked by an alligator. these pictures of the gator were taken after it was captured near hilton head, a 77-year-old man hit his golf ball when a ten-foot gator grabbed his arm. the man s golf partners went to help him and were able to free him from the gator s grip. they won their first oscars together and now we re hearing they may actually be related. actors matt damon and ben affleck are tenth cousins. the childhood friends are a descendent of a brick layer that came to the u.s. from england in the 1630s. affleck has a lot of other famous relatives, including 16 u.s. presidents and u.s. president president obama is among them. and a 2-year-old boy is the youngest boy in britain to be accepted into mensa. he scored more than 160 points on a recent iq test. he started talking at just nine months old, and by 18 months old he already knew the alpha bet. that s the news. now back tond bill. we ll look forward to welcoming oscar at the next mensa meeting we attend. amy s the president, right? bill, thank you. still to come, disturbing new numbers about the spread and the deadly impact of swine flu. welcome back n. now to the swine flu. new numbers for the centers for disease control show the h1n1 virus is now in all 50 states, 37 of them reporting widespread outbreaks. and the number of children dying from swine flu is also rising quickly. 76 fatalities since the outbreak began in april, 19 of them occurring just last week alone. dr. anthony fauci is director of the national institute of allergy and infectious dszs. he joins us from washington. doctor, good morning. it s good to see you. good morning. that number, 76 children, is particularly alarming, especially when we consider that s on average the number of children who die from the seasonal flu each year. as alarming as it is, is this flu following the patterns that you expected? well, this flu is definitely not following the patterns of seasonal flu because, you know, it hit us in the spring, it hung around in the summer, and then we had a big upsurge as children began coming back to school. so, this is out of whack for a seasonal flu. we re right in the beginning of a, quote, seasonal flu time period. and as you just mentioned, the number of children tt have died from the flu already is almost as much as an entire average flu season. and we just had 19 deaths among children, tragically, jt this past week associated with the h1n1 flu. so, this is not a pattern that s similar to the seasonal flu at all. the vaccine, as we noted, was just released this week starting with the nasal spray, and it s about to go to the shot form of it. so far, are you pleased with the progress of how it s going? well, i m pleased with the fact that the vaccine is being rolled out approximately when we said it would be. there s going to be a lot more doses available in the coming weeks. as you know last week we had the first several hundred thousand doses. at the end of the week, a few million. and now we re going to be talking about tens of millions of doses coming in. we want to make sure that the people who should and need to get vaccinated do get vaccinated. we don t want to hear what we re hearing, that there are some people that are reluctant to get vaccinated. we can understand sometimes the reluctance. but we just need to do even a better job of getting the message across of why particularly people who are at a higher risk of complications, like pregnant women and young children, should be getting vaccinated. when you talk about the reluctance, adults can make that decision on their own, but many are making it for their children. about a third of adults say they will not allow their children to get the swine flu vaccination. what is your message to them in terms of the safety of this vaccine? well, there s no question that this vaccine and these types of vaccines have an extraordinarily good track record of safety. this vaccine for the h1n1 is made in exactly the same way, the same materials, the same company, the same processing that we do every year for seasonal flu vaccine. we have a record over decades of a track record of safety and tens if not hundreds of millions of people. so, it is really a safe vaccine. they need to weigh that against the risks of the things that you ve just said, about the unfortunate pete yatd rick or children deaths that we re seeing already with this h1n1. so, we encourage the parents to reconsider if they re deciding that they don t want their children to be vaccinated. they really should reconsider that and get their children vaccinated. dr. anthony fauci, always good to have you on. good to be here. still to come, new in evidence the murder case against casey anthony. what was she doing after her daughter disappeared? no one. it was a wonderful picture and a sad parting. we can t wait to hear from her coming up. and we ll cook up some mouth-watering italian meals for us. we have that coming up. later on, some of the strange but true ns stories you may have heard this week. also too good to ignore, like this is playboy s new cover girl. we re going to be talking about that. and we ll take a closer look into those headlines. you wouldn t even believe who that new cover girl is anyway. a lot coming up this half hour. but the latest in the case against casey anthony. the prosecution has released evidence, made it public, hundreds of documents including a photo of a tattoo that casey got after her daughter disappeared. nbc s michelle kosinski has more on that. reporter: 2-year-old caylee anthony was murdered according to investigators. but even they didn t see in the latest amount of evidence in documents released they don t know how or where or why. what they do show us are more photos of casey anthony partying, her new tattoo, bela vitae, or beautiful life, made while her daughter was missing. and the grim reality, the duct tape found on caylee s remains, the bag she was wrapped in. her shirt read big trouble comes in small packages. now investigators reveal it has been theorized that caylee was intentionally placed in this shirt because of what it says. they believe at some point her body was in the trunk of casey s car. one fbi agent e-mails another about a very large stain there. there appears to be the outline or silhouette of a child in the fetal position. investigators combed through that car, every speck, and found one hair, one that lab results suggest came from a corpse. on other hairs from the car, in napkins police suspect may have been used to clean thattrunk, researchers ca found what they death wax, a product of human decomposition. the bag was the same type found in casey s home. but the duct tape was not. casey anthony is presumed innocent until proven guilty. reporter: so far, all of this evidence has proven to be circumstantial. still to some legal analysts, that s enough. i ve gotten verdicts on far less evidence than this. circumstantial evidence continues tooint to the defendant. reporter: however, now we know among this little girl s remains found in the woods six months after she disappeared there was a hair that did not belong to caylee or casey. whose is it? i kind of called to her a couple times. i don t know if she didn t hear me or just, you know, went, daddy, i m not listening to you. but i just kind of sent it to her and she never responded to me at all. abby, how did you get her to let go of her daddy s hand? i didn t. she at one point i don t know if he told her something or she just decided to come over. she came over actually to see one of the other soldier s girlfriends who was standing with me. and she came over and she wanted to go back. and at that point, they were kind of breaking up and i had to hold her because she wasn t going to know which one was him right away. so, i held her and she was not happy about that. she was kind of kicking and screaming and page, let me ask you. why did you go running after your daddy? because i wanted to hold his hand still because i didn t want to go. did you know where he was going? iraq. but what s life like without your daddy now that he s in iraq right now, page? i feel sad sometimes when he s gone. do you get to talk to him much? yeah. do you get to see him? you do? yes, i do. in your head maybe, right? well, we actually want too bring someone else in to ask a question because i m guessing you haven t seen your daddy in a while. he left back in july. can you see your daddy right there? everyone is extremely excited. page has kind of been an unofficial mascot to our company because of being around so much. and people have been just going on to yahoo! websites and msn websites and everything like that, and there s page s picture. they read the article and come knock on my door and say, oh, my god, i saw your little girl on the news. she s on yahoo!, on msn. it s been overwhelming. everyoneere is very excited and very happy that this kind of support is getting thrown out there. and, sergeant, it speaks volumes about what families go through each and every day as they send off their loved ones to iraq and other places around the world to serve our country. yeah. i m certainly not the only phat we are a little girl here. a lot of our unit has left their children at home, and we all really appreciate how this has spread and how we re all being recognized right now. abby, i have to ask, when you took the photo, did you have any idea that this would be the response? - .and grab ahold of the latest tools out there. - oh! .so we can quit all that messing around with extra steps - and get busy turning our doing dials up a notch? - whoo! oh! more saving. more doing. - that s the power of the home depot. - yeah yeah yeah. this morning on cooking with giada, an italian feast. we are filling our kitsch within the smells and colors of the fall harvest. and we are going to make a hearty italian meal. good morning. nice to see you. good morning, guys. rigatoni but i see prawns and squash. little more than rigatoni. we re making pasta, which everybody loves this time of year. but we ll make a sauce a little differently than most people think, with butternut squash. we ll make it elegant, a se jumbo shrimp or prawns to it. cook these the way you normally cook regular shrimp. exactly. they only take a few minutes, chsz why i love them. you always feel so special when you cook shrimp or prawns for them. you can leave it out if you d rather. they only cook for about two to three minutes on each side. did you season them with anything? just salt and pepper. very simple. i ll ask you, lester, to keep an eye on this. i will. i ll bring it over. we have sauce to make. we do. it sounds weird. most people roast their squash, but we ll start with a little bit of oliveoil, add a little bit of garlic for a little flavor, and then i add the butternut squash. okay. you want to cook the butternut squash just like this for about five minutes until it becomes just slightly golden and a little bit tender. and depending on what size you cut your squash, ill s going to cook faster or slower. okay. is there a benefit to having it cook slower? not really. it just depends on how you chop it up. it depends on if you re in a hurry or not. we re always in a hurry. there you go. the more you do it, the faster it cooks. finish cooking it in some vegetable broth. it stays nice and moist. a total of 10 to 12 minutes to cook the butternut squash until it s nice and tender. cover it and leave it there for about five minutes. once it s tender, stick a fork in it, it s nice and soft, put it in the blender for a nice puree. now we mix this with the rigatoni? yeah, but the shrimp aren t quite there yet. not quite. yeah. so, lester picture, if you will. nice, pink shrimp. they re getting there. how long does it take? it takes about three minutes a side. and we haven t spent three minutes yet. come back to them, okay? it really doesn t matter what kind of pasta you use, but i love the rigatoni because i ll touch this with my hands, but you see the hole inside of it? the sauce gets stuck in there, when you bite into it, kind of extra you like the al dente. i do, but everybody s different. here s the butternut squash pureed and to make it nice and velvety, just add three-quarters of a cup of whole milk. it creates more of a sauce so it s not terribly thick. see how it loosens up and turns a beautiful orange color. that looks great. then i just add it right over here. beautiful. okay? then parmesan cheese? parmesan cheese to thicken it up. basil. chopped basil. and that is it. perfect. you just let the pasta finish cooking in here and absorb the sauce. then i top it with the shrimp. top it. you can fold it in if you want. another fantastic dish here. kale and green beans, slightly spicy. nice vegetables you can create and add flavor. what do you spice it with? green pepper flakes. and dessert? strawberry scones. prawns are ready but we re out of time. thanks very much. we ll be right back. i realize we couldn t finish the segment because the prawns weren t ready. they re in there now. can we try?
