in fact he tries, and tries, and tries before finally getting away. he s still on the loose, and now police are looking for a guy with lots of bruises today, wednesday, april 14th, 2010. captions paid for by nbc-universal television and good morning. welcome to today on a wednesday morning. i m matt lauer. i m meredith vieira. this morning, rescuers desperately try to reach parts of western china hard hit by those powerful quakes. the region is one of the most remote areas in china, near the border with tibet. overnight those crews were hampered by several strong aftershocks. the latest on that situation in a live report from china in a couple of minutes. is also ahead, a possible break in the mysterious disappearance of haley cummings. police say new information has surfaced leading to an all-out search. coming up her grandmother speaks out in an exclusive live interview. plus another major blow for toyota. the automakers says it will now stop selling one of its popular electric sh lexus models after consumer reports gave it a rare don t buy rating. and we ll unveil the lineup for our summer concert series. trust us, it is a really good list. but let s begin with serious news. a strong earthquake in qinghai, china. reporter: good morning, meredith. the quake struck a predominantly tibeten corner in western china known for its landscape and poverty and extremely remote location. the first quake struck at 7:49 in the morning just as people in the town were getting ready for the day. registering 6.9, the earthquake drove residents out on to the street as their homes toppled over. six aftershocks followed in quick succession in the next three hours. the main quake was centered on the tibetan plateau, an average of 12,000 feet above sea level in mountains dividing qinghai province in western china from the tibet autonomous region. a poor and remote area, the county near the epicenter had nearly 9,000 people mainly herders and farmers. it is estimated as many as 80% of residential buildings mostly built out of mud and wood collapsed. state run media shows pictures of rescuers searching through rubble for survivors using their hands or primitive tools like shovels. authorities are concerned the death toll could climb sharply because of the cold weather and challenging conditions. meredith, we re also just hearing that since the main skwak struck, there have been 200 to 300 aftershocks and the weather could definitely prove to be a serious problem. forecasters say sandstorms and rain and snow could hit the region later tonight. more bad news. nbc s adrian wong. thank you so much. natalie s filling in while ann is on assignment. good morning. good morning, everyone. president obama is set to outline the future of nasa tomorrow at the kennedy space center with space shuttle due to stop flying soon, the plan calls for canceling the next generation of rockets that would take astronauts back to the moon and to rely instead on private companies to ferry astronauts to the space station. meantime, three apollo restaurants call the changes devastating. in a letter, they write, the president s plan destines our nation to become one of second, or even third-rate stature. . first lady michelle obama is on her first solo trip to mexico. nbc correspondent savannah guthrie is in mexico city. savannah, why is she there? reporter: well, natalie, they say she wants to emphasize the closeness of our two countries. she s actually going to have her second state kinner at t edinnee house for mexico next month. this kicks off her international agenda which seems to be all about engaging the world s youth after a tour later this morning of the national anthropology museum with the first lady of mexico, she ll watch a performance, chat with the students and then deliver a speech to college age students at a university here. on tuesday she made an unannounced trip to haiti with dr. jill biden, the vice president s wife. she said touring a survivors camp there that the damage was devastating but there is hope because the u.s. will help in the rebuilding efforts. savannah gust gustry in mexi city, thank you. doctors in florida say 11-year-old nadia bloom is doing remarkably well after spending four days lost in a swampy area full of alligators. she was found tuesday morning. we ll have much more on this incredible story coming up. toyota is temporarily halting sales of the gx 460 after consumer reports magazine warned people not to buy it saying the vehicle demonstrated potential handling problems that could cause the lexus suv to roll over. this morning overseas markets are mostly higher. cnbc s melissa lee is at the new york stock exchange for us. lots to watch today. certainly there is. a lot of major u.s. companies are posting quarterly results today. already the markets have good news out of intel. posting better than expected quarterly results but more importantly saying that it is hiring up to 2,000 people and that its customers, businesses, are spending again. this is all good news for technology stocks, but good news for the markets overall, could help the markets hold above that 11,000 mark. melissa lee at the new york stock exchange, thank you. police in tulsa, oklahoma are on the lookout for a burglar who left his own blooper tape behind. according to police, the man broke through the roof of the drugstore, set off the alarm, then used a ladder to try to get away, but he kept falling and falling, at least about seven times before he finally got up and away. like the world s most stupid burglar right there. 7:07 right now. let s turn back over to matt, meredith and al. he should be easy to find. sentence him having to watch that tape over and over again. natalie, thanks very much. mr. roker. hey, look, i m on tv! anyway, let s see what s happening for today. we ve got a frontal system that s bringing some rain to the i m chuck bell and the sun is just lifting over the top of that cloud bank in the eastern skies. turns out to be a beautiful day. the sunshine will burn away the fog in the western suburbs. it is a chilly april start. 35 in martinsburg, west virginia. 47 in annapolis. dense fog becomes mostly sunny at noon time and highs in the upper 50s and low 60 and that s your latest weather. matt? al, thank you very much. president obama has wrapped up his successful nuclear security summit. two days of high-level diplomatic meetings that seemed to have quieted some of the president s critics. one of those critics is with us this morning, dick morris, a veteran political strategist and author of the new book, 2010 take back america a battle plan. hi, dick, it is nice to see you. good morning. i m not silenced. he brings together 47 leaders of these nations in washington. they get together, he says it s the number one threat facing u.s. national security, the idea that nuclear weapons could fall into the hands of terrorists. is there something wrong with this strategy? yeah. we point it out in our book. the nation that is most likely to put nukes in the hands of terrorists is iran. when they acquire it. and the united states, both under bush and obama, has been totally ineffectual in slowing down the iranian program. one of the things that came out of this meeting, china now seems to be on-board with tougher sanctions against iran. that s a major accomplishment. isn t it? yeah, but the sanction that would work is the one that both houses of congress have approved but the president has yet to implement, which is to cut off the supply of gasoline imports to iran. iran imports 40% of its gasoline from dubai. it doesn t have the refining capabilities. very punishing to the iranian people. is that going to get it done? yeah, well a nuclear attack would be very punishing to the israeli people, too. let s talk about the next big battle in washington. that whole concept that obama is pushing which you criticize here can t hurt the people. when bill clinton imposed sanctions on serbia, there were across-the-board sanctions. it hurt the serbian people, it made milosevic back down and as a result we were very successful. let s talk about washington and the next big battle coming up over the supreme court, the vacancy being left behind by justice stevens. is this going to be an all-out battle? i mean he s a liberal, he ll be replaced by a liberal. we know that. how are republicans going to frame the debate? well, i don t know how they will. i know how i hope they do. everybody knows he s going to be a pro-choice judge. as you point out, it is a liberal vote, it will be replaced by a liberal. but there are a host of constitutional issues that have been raised by obama s, in my judgment,, in the health care bill where he tells every single state you have got to cover 133% of the poverty level under medicaid. what that means functionally, the federal government is telling texas you have to have an income tax because you have to come up with $3 billion extra. that i believe violates the sent amendme tenth amendment that gives states the right to do their own budgeting by this massive mandate. the other thing i think the individual mandate to buy insurance is unconstitutional. i can clearly tell you, hey, i m going to tax you $10,000 and give you insurance if i m the government but i can t ask you to buy a policy from meredith. that s not constitutional. i think the republicans as we urge in this book should put this supreme court nominee on the record on these crucial issues. since you bring up health care, in your book i don t have a lot of time you re tough on the president. his dream is our nightmare. make no mistake, fulfilling obama xuixotic vision for our future would result in the systematic ruin of just about every segment of the america we know and love. it is as though the existence of the modern democrat is a myth. at this point no more moderate democrats exist. the speciess extinct. i think we essentially have a fairly polarized system now. i used to be a moderate democrat. that s what i was when i worked for bill clinton. i m extinct. i m a dodo bird. you realize that s going to be the headline of the interview right there. that s okay. and most of the nancy pelosi and harry reid keep power by the votes of guys and women that go back to the district and say, hey, i m a moderate, i m a conservative, i don t vote for all this stuff. but when they go to washington, the first vote they cast is for pelosi as speaker. once they do that, no other vote matters. so they need 60 votes? they get 60 votes. and i believe that that means there is no room in the democratic party for people like me. dick morris. 2010 take back america. the dodo bird. you said it, i didn t. right? good to see you. 13 after the hour. here s meredith. when the housing market collapsed, the plunge was sudden and shocking. now senate investigators say they ve uncovered one big reason why it happened deceptive practices inside the biggest u.s. bank ever to fail. nbc s kelly o donnell is on capitol hill with details. kelly, good morning. reporter: good morning, meredith. this senate investigation has taken more than a year-and-a-half and it gives us a startling window inside the collapse of washington mutual. investigators say they have found documents and got some officials to make big admissions. washington mutual engaged in lending practices that created a mortgage time bomb. there was fraudulent activity going on. correct? yes. reporter: the scope of deception that was inside washington mutual s high-risk subprime mortgage business stunned senators. look. this is what happened. you don t have any controls for fraud. it s going on. reporter: former executives under oath. so help you god. i do. reporter: pressed to explain their own internal review that showed two california offices with an extremely high incidence of fraud. as high as 83% of mortgages. those fraud percentages, 83%, 58%, those are truly eye-popping numbers. are they not? they are. reporter: investigators found that bank employees who sold the most high-risk and high-profit loans earned an incentive, joining the president s club. instead of being disciplined or fired, they are given rewarding trips to hawaii and the bahamas. how does that happen? any time there is fraud, we took it very seriously. no. no. it was fraud. you reward the folks who are being investigated with trips. that s the action. reporter: several bank officials testified they knew that lies were on some loan applications. yes. you think middle managers also knew that? that information was communicated via the results of that work. and how about the top managers? the memos were also communicated upward. reporter: but former ceo kerry killinger maintained that he did not know about fraud. i m certainly very disappointed to think about my customers lying to me, because that s fraud. and it shouldn t happen. reporter: investigators say washington mutual sold investors fraudulent mortgages that were more likely to default. one executive said he has no idea. i would expect that i would be informed of this, yes. i mean this is damning stuff. reporter: the former ceo said he is deeply sorry for what happened but believes washington mutual could have fixed its own problems if the government had not seized the bank in 2008. now all of this is part of why congress is now trying to work on new financial regulations. and the investigators i talk to say that after they hold some more hearings, they ll make a big decision whether to turn over all their findings to the department of justice for the possibility of criminal prosecution. kelly o donnell, thank you very much. 7:16. here s matt. now to a new lead in a case of 5-year-old haley cummings that triggered a major new search more than a year after her mysterious disappearance. we ll talk exclusively to haley s grandmother in a moment. but first, nbc s michelle kosinski has the latest on this story. michelle, good morning. what can you tell us? reporter: good morning, matt. this has been one of those cases with just a big question mark hanging over it. it seems that no one close to this child has any idea what happened to her. there certainly hasn t been any known evidence that she s been harmed. that has given the family some hope. here we are a year later and all of a sudden police have this new lead that they re treating as a very big deal. it s the news this family has been waiting for. a possible break in a year hold mystery. what happened to 5-year-old haleigh cummings. but it was obviously the kind of news they had hoped not to hear. police launching an all-out search, in and along the st. john s river, in a rugged place they haven t been before, about five miles south of where haleigh lived. they re going from house to house, everything everybody that lives here all their personal information. right now we can t release what we re looking for really right now. it just came from a lead, we can t say what source it came from at this point. reporter: police brought the family in to talk to them, including haleigh s tearful father ronald now on jail for serious charges of trafficking prescription painkillers. so is his wife, the teenager who says she woke up february morning of last year while ronald was at work and 5-year-old haleigh was just gone. since then she says she knows more than she s telling, that her story has major holes, they don t even know she was home when she said she was. while she sits in jail on drug charges, her own father urges her to come clean. don t be lying about nothing. because all it s going to do is bury you deeper. reporter: now misty s attorney says this possible break has come from someone else and she may have helped police. she won t say anymore on this still murky, muddy road to finding this little girl. in the last year they ve gotten more than 5,000 tips. right now here all eyes are on whether this will be the one to finally solve it. police continue to keep searching today. meredith? michelle kosinski, thank you have much. haleigh s pa certainly grandmother is with us this morning. good morning. we just saw that image of you leaving the sheriff s office yesterday with tears in your eyes. what can you tell us about what he said to you? they called us in to tell us that they were going to be doing a search, that the search was from a lead that they had gotten and basically there s not much more i can tell you. did they tell you who the lead was? no, ma am. i know that they re searching the st. john s river which is the river that they searched on the days following haleigh s disappearance last year but a different section of that river. what have you learned about why they re searching there? it s just a couple miles out from where they searched last year, and they told us that they were searching there because of a new lead that they have. misty was with haleigh the night she disappeared. the last time we spoke to you, teresa, you said you felt she was holding back something that might help find haleigh. do you still believe that s the case and do you think she might have said something to investigators that led them on this new search? i do believe that she s holding something. i m not sure what it is or how it can help. but i believe that she s holding something back, that she knows something and i don t know. i ve never spoken to her. i do not know if this new lead has anything to do with her. we also saw an image of ron, your son ron, who is in jail right now on drug trafficking charges, but he was allowed to go to the sheriff s office as well and also was in tears when he left the office. how is he handling all of this? it s difficult now. any time they call you in and tell you that they re going to be doing such a search, it s hard for us. we always hold out hope that haleigh s alive. for ronald, it s twice as hard because he has to go back and he has to deal with this by himself. teresa, how do you hold on to that hope that haleigh is alive? a new spin on that cash for clunkers program. time it is not your old car but your old appliances that could save you a lot of cash. we ll tell you how it works. apparently it works differently from state to state. this is a very exciting morning around here because we re going it reveal the lineup for our summer concert series. just wait until you hear who is going to be performing live on the plaza. we begin this half-hour to the happy ending of the search for 11 year-old nadia bloom who disappeared into an alligator-infested florida swamp for four days. we ll talk to the man who found her in just a moment. but first, nbc s mark potter has the extraordinary details. mark, good morning to you. reporter: good morning, meredith. too often missing children s cases don t end well and people here had begun to fear that in nadia bloom s case. but then came a stunning 911 call and everything changed. it happened early tuesday. 11-year-old nadia bloom found alive after days of difficult searching in dense woods and swamps, officials had begun to fear the worst. but then they got a dramatic 911 cell phone call from a densely wooded area they had not yet searched. i ve got her. i ve got nadia. okay, i m in the middle of the swamp. i can give you my gps coordinates off of this blackberry. sir, you re in contact with her? i m holding her right now, yeah. she s okay. she got bites all over her, she s got some scratches. she s very lucid. she has no major injuries, just exposure. i ve got some i m gonna give her some liquids. i ve got some stuff prepared for her. the lord told me where to find her. the caller was james king, a searcher from the bloom family s church who at dawn had ventured into the woods alone. the 911 operator asked to speak with nadia. hi. this is nadia and i m the girl that got lost. nadia, are you okay? you re not hurt in anyway? hi, what s your name? my name is mark, nadia. i m one of the dispatchers for the police department. if you just stay with that man right where you are, we re going to have somebody come to you right now. reporter: word that nadia had been rescued spread fast and electrified the community. she s alive! she s here! i can t imagine what all the rescuers are feeling when you actually search for somebody for five days and you find them alive? fabulous. reporter: nadia, who has a mild form of autism, disappeared friday afternoon near a wooded area close to home in winter springs, florida. her mother also calling 911. i can t find her. okay, what s your name? tanya. what s your last name, tanya? bloom. reporter: police searched for days and nights but to no avail. after james king found her, police confirmed that nadia was barefoot, dehydrated and suffering from mosquito bites but very much alive. she did make two comments to the officers when they got there. glad you guys found me, can t believe you rescued me. reporter: as authorities struggle to carry nadia out of the dense woods on a stretcher, her parents waited nervously to see her. her emotional father later hugging james king. things don t always turn out this way. reporter: doctors treating nadia said, given all she had been through, she actually was doing wonderfully. she was smiling. her vitals were stable. she clearly has had the effects of being outside now for about five days. reporter: for police and the entire community, nadia s rescue was a huge relief. nadia is out of the hospital. both she and james king were questioned by police. the police chief here says he is absolutely convinced that mr. king is a hero. he also says that if he didn t believe in miracles before, he does now. i think we all do. mark potter, thank you very much. james king is the man who found nadia bloom. good morning to you. good morning. what an incredible story. what a wonderful outcome. you were searching for nadia with another group of people on monday. couldn t find her. then you talked with i believe it was her uncle who was leading that search effort, decided to go back at dawn on tuesday morning by yourself and continue the search. i believe that god wanted me to. when the men said, well, we ll gather together tomorrow some time and we ll come in from the other side on a 417, i prayed. my wife talked with me that night and reminded me, james, when we lose something and we pray to the spirit we always find it. i said you re right. we went back in as soon as the sun came up. i couldn t imagine leaving her out there until everybody else was able to get together. as soon as the sun came up i went in and the lord led me directly to her. you were calling out her name every few minutes. right? it was about two hours into the swamp. it was very rough. i was prepared. i ve been in swamped. and i went in and everyone told me to follow where the sunrise was. i went directly east as much as you can go direct in a swamp. i would call nadia? i d be praying and talking to the lord. lord would be directing me. one time i said, nadia, i heard, what? i said, oh! i m going that way! it was probably about 40 yards later, calling back and forth to make sure i went directly to her. there she was sitting on a log looking up at me expectantly like, okay, you re finally here. she recognized you. she said she did. she s pretty direct and straightforward. i m sure she saw me from church. what condition was she in? amazingly good condition. she had bug bites from the top of her head to the bottom of her feet and scratches. none of them were swollen and red as if there was infection. there was no fever. the bottoms of her feet were waterlogged. she didn t have her shoes anymore. her demeanor and her attitude was fine. she was not panicked. she was not panicked. no, not at all. she apparently has a great faith. the prayers of a lod of people and the lord s guidance let me directly to her. in addition to the lord s guidance, you had your blackberry. my bible, some water. i had some stuff prepared for nadia because i believed i was going to find her. i had some nutrition drink, a very small eight-ounce of that, water, trail mix. you also had toilet paper. what was that for? going into the swamp i thought i would maybe leave markers so i would have a way back out. i realized after going in there was no way i was going back out that way. it was very bad, very dangerous. i thought no matter where i am, i m not going back in this way. so i ended up keeping it. with the helicopters circling, they were unable to locate me, i sat nadia back down on the log and went over to the nearest opening in the canopy and covered the top of some bushes with the toilet paper so they could spot us. i got to ask you, the police chief pointed out in his piece, said he has no doubt that are you a hero. but they did question you and there was some skepticism because it seems too good to be true. do you understand why they questioned you? sure, well they re doing their job. they don t know who i am. who s this guy? i wasn t a part of the official search party. i was in by myself. nadia s missing four four days. i m sure they re investigating all kinds of things. they did their job, check me out, did a very professional job and made sure things were as they seemed. james, it is a pleasure to meet you. thank you, god bless you. thank you. let s bring in nancy mcbride from the center for missing and exploited children. nancy, good morning to you. good morning, meredith. i know that your group was also involved in this search for nadia so how are you feeling this morning? i m ecstatic. i ve been doing this work for over 20 years. it is such a wonderful outcome especially in the state of florida. you know we ve got a number of cases that are unresolved so this is just outstanding. what lesson can parents take from this? i think there are a number of lessons. first, what a brave little girl nadia is. everything goes out to her from me. i think she s wonderful. she stayed calm, which is great. i think the message to parents is, this is a great opportunity to sit down, really talk to your kids, really listen to your kids, and do some practicing, do some what if scenarios. what if you were lost, what would you do? absolutely right. depends on where you live. some states cover water heaters, air conditioners. what have you. some states don t. but just about every state covers refrigerators. however, $300 million sounds like a lot of money. it s not when you start dividing it up among 50 states and the territories. in texas they announced they were taking reservations on this program last week. they ran out of money real quickly. florida i think, their program starts on friday. do you expect this money to go very fast from state to state? absolutely. texas basically ran out of reservations inside of four hours. several states are out of funds already. will this do for the appliance industry what it did for the auto industry? was it a big boost? it is going to be somewhat of a boost. again, it is $300 million compared with billions for the car industry. but it s really going to help them i think to some degree because sales are down some 25%. basically, the idea behind this is that you have to replace an existing apluns and the idea is the government wants you to replace a less energy efficient appliance with a more energy efficient appliance. go through the list of appliances we are talking about. again, refrigerators, clothes washers, dishwashers, air conditioners, often heat pumps in certain states, water heaters, furnaces. how much of a rebate can you get on an individual appliance? that differ state to state as well? tremendously. in new york, it is typically $75 or so for many things with recycling, $100 if you buy a bundle, if you buy three energy efficient energy star rated got to be energy star rated, you are looking at $200 per appliance. you said this is the most important appliance in your house in terms of saving money. why is that? it is. because it uses the most. this is refridge refrigerat 24/7. it is the most energy-consuming appliance in your house, next to the tv. in some states you have a better chance of receiving a rebate if you apply and reserve online. that s right. but there are a lot of people who don t have access to computers. are they up the creek? not really. that was a big knock in florida. they can certainly go to the library. obviously if you ve got a son or daughter with a computer or friend, can you do that. library s a good source. the best idea is go to your state s rebate website if you do have a computer or a hotline in some states, get the information because you can save some cash. absolutely. bob, thanks so much for the information. i appreciate it. for details on the rebate program in your state, head to our website at todayshow.com. up next, does kate gosselin regret anything she said about her ex-husband, jon? (announcer) ask your doctor about pristiq. we re back now at 8:10 with the downfall of a hollywood air and sometimes toxic mix of drugs and celebrity. nbc s peter alexander has more on this. peter, good morning to you. reporter: matt, this is a tragic tale. michael douglas older child cameron tried to follow in his father s footsteps chasing stardom. instead it was a battle with addiction that cast him in a real life drama with a judge expected to sentence him to prison later this month. he is the son and grandson of hollywood royalty. but with only a few movie roles to his name hey, dad with you could you chill out, please? reporter: cameron douglas life may most resemble one of his father s award-winning films. there is a war on drugs that many of our family members are the enemy, and i don t know how you wage war on your own family. reporter: but drug enforcement agents did wage war on michael and former wife deandre douglas only son. cameron, who is 31, now awaits sentencing for drug trafficking, a crime that carries a minimum of 10 years in federal prison. this is a huge drug case. this is not a small little marijuana bust. if this weren t michael douglas son, and dthis would be a major because of the amount of methamphetamine involves. reporter: court records show cameron, who was his father s best man when he married actress kathleen zeta-jones, had been abusing drugs since the age of 13 and began dealing meth in 2006 when he refused once again to get treatment and was cut off from the douglas family s fortune. at the time of his arrest in 2009, prosecutors say cameron was hold up in a trendy manhattan hotel shooting up heroin six times a day. it s not just another story of a child of a celebrity misbehaving. this is somebody with hard-core drug addiction. that degree of heroin addiction is a fatal disorder. so in reality this conviction could save his life. reporter: kirk douglas and his relatives are pleading for leniency from the court. i m convinced cameron could be a fine actor and a person that cares for others. i hope i can see that happen before i die. and from catherine zeta-jones, my stepson is a caring, considerate, worthy human being. but nevertheless, the disease he has for years tried to combat did take over again. cameron s family fame was a curse, it was way too much for him to handle. cameron brought his favorite gifts when he was growing up. reporter: father and son visited the plaza at today almost ten years ago as part of the annual toy drive. at the time, cameron showed no signs of his troubled life, a life and an addiction that will now put him behind bars. in a federal prison he is no longer the son of michael douglas. he is a number. cameron douglas lawyers are asking the court to give him just 3 1/2 years in prison, arguing he became a middleman in crystal meth deals to support his own drug habit. again, matt, we ll find out his sentence in the next few weeks. peter alexander, thank you very much. dan abrams is nbc s chief legal analyst. dr. julie holland is a psychiatrist and author of weekends at bellevue. good morning to both of you. this is a sad story for a lot of reasons. i feel bad for the douglas family, for michael who i know, i know he s devastated, as any father would be. but in the eyes of the law, dan, this is not a celebrity case, this is a drug trafficking case. and a big drug trafficking case. we re talking about a lot of meth here. as a result, the minimum appears to be ten years. that s the minimum. the defense lawyers are making a variety of arguments, he was a middleman, et cetera, that he should be entitled to get something under four years. that s very unlikely that a judge will accept that argument. cameron has pled guilty. he s said to be cooperative. he s received support from some high-profile people and i wonder if that might not cut both ways with a judge. on the one hand, these are heartfelt emotions from these people. on the other hand, he s not going to want to appear as though he s being swayed by celebrity. that s exactly right. you don t want to be the judge who gave a lesser sentence because you got a letter from kirk douglas. so i think that there is actually an argument people always talk about celebrity justice. in a case like this, i think cameron s celebrity works against him because, even if a judge was inclined to reduce the sentence, to give something lower than the minimum, i think a judge will say this is not the case i m going to do it. remember, one of the factors when a judge is considering what sentence to impose is, what will be the future deterrent value of this? and in a celebrity case, you could argue, giving a very harsh sentence is a deterrent. i m going to go through some names, julie. redmond o neill. the osborne children. mackenzie phillips. why is it the children of so many famous people have so much difficulty in particular in the area of addiction? i think there is two things. the first thing is the home life and how much love and attention they re getting at home. celebrities i think by definition maybe have are narcissism, are more narcissistic so they aren t necessarily not all though. let s not paint with a broad brush here. i don t want to paint with a broad brush, but i think that children need a lot of love and attention and they need to feel connected to their parents. they need to feel attached and cared for and wanted. sometimes when parents are very busy and they hand their kids off to other people or the household is very chaotic, children go looking for love and attention in other places. but the other issue i think is that when you re a celebrity, people want to be with you, they want to hang out with you. they want to give you drugs. because they re much less likely to confront you and say, what are you doing? right. they re not going to put on the brakes or be confrontational. they just want to tell their friends they smoked pot with somebody who hung out with somebody. you favor intervention and treatment in these cases over incarceration. but this is a drug trafficking case. so it is different in this one? i do believe in our country we have many nonviolent drug offenders who are in prison who would be better served in treatment. this is a trafficking case so i think it is a different story. but he clearly needs treatment and i don t know what kind of treatment he s going to get in prison. which is another issue. is that a consideration for the judge? sure, it is a consideration. the defense hopes it will be taken into consideration. in fact, the defense s primary argument here is that he was feeding his own habit, that he wasn t your sort of classic dealer, that he was actually just a middleman who was taking it from the major dealer and really just trying to feed his own habit. unfortunately for the defense, it is an argument that s made very often in cases like this. it s rarely one that succeeds and in particular, as i mentioned before, i think in a case like this you re going to see that a judge is going to be very reluctant to accept that argument. dan, doctor, thank you both very much for your input. up next, five things to know if you still haven t filed your taxes. you ve got about 24 hours to do it. that s right after this. so we earned a tropical vacation in half the time. we earn double miles every time we use our card. your w-2. remember, you have a job, you get a w-2. a 1099. maybe you work for yourself, got your own company. or your 1099. millions of people are unemployed and are going to get a 1099-g. create that checklist, make sure you get it right. e file. you get your refund back quicker. isn t it amazing how many people fail to e-file. yet it is the fastest, safest way to get your tax return to the irs. as you said, more importantly, we need our tax refunds so the faster you get your tax return to the irs, the faster you get your money and e-filing is the way to go. there s no way those e-mails are going to pile up because it s the deadline? i love that. everyone thinks there s some alien lurking in the internet that s going to steal our tax return. no. please don t have that misconception. i promise you, you e-file it, the irs will get it. you also say this seems obvious be honest on your tax return. let s face it. look at 2009. we ve got high unemployment, people lost their homes, maybe they went through a divorce so people are desperate. we cannot let that desperation carry on to our tax return. two plus two must equal four in 2009 or you will be audited. even if you got to double check your math. even an honest mistake can lead you into some trouble. absolutely. and no one likes math so we know you got to double-check your math with that calculator. tip number four, make copies of everything. you would be amazed how many people send the irs originals and then they get lost in the irs rabbit hole. what s going to happen when the irs knocks on your door and says, i need to you substantiate something and i say, i sent it to you. who do you think is going to win that argument? that s why you ve got to make those copies. if you re not ready to file today, file an extension. this is my favorite last-minute tip. millions of americans are unprepared, unorganized. heck, we ve got to take care of kids, we ve got jobs. we re unorganized. we organize our shoe closet more than our tax returns. good news, you automatically get a six-month tax extension for any reason at all but you have to file form 4868 by april 15th. make sure it is postmarked and guess what? you have six months to get it right. but if you owe the government money, you have to pay it by april 15th. right? absolutely not, meredith. 70% of all taxpayers will get a refund which means 30% need to send a check. if you cannot afford to send the irs your money, make sure that you at least get that extension and know, yes, you ll pay 0.5%, failure to pay penalty interest each month, and 3% interest on that tax return what you owe. but let s do the facts. what if you owe $1,000? you ll only pay $70 additionally to get that six-month. so, no, meredith, you do not have to send the money with your tax return. let s face it, millions of people will not have that money on april 15th. absolutely. finally, there are a lot of states that are strapped for cash right now who aren t going to get refunds to people as quickly as they d like. any recourse? they won. you go to the hardware store, you want to paint the rooms in your home and they have a million paint chips there. how do you not get overwhelmed by that? we ve been designing paint colors for a long time based pretty much on nature. i find that nature offers very soothing solutions to the inside of your house. it could be the fur on your cat, the eyes of your dog, francesca black which is a new color on our 280 colors. look at this gorgeous, gorgeous selection of colors that the home depot. francesca black, my little french bulldog, best selling color. that s because they are very nice to live with. you want something soothing. you don t want something that s going to be jarring every time you walk in a room. when you have a small room, is there a rule of thumb? a smaller room, unless you want a little den, and some men love their little dens where they can hang out, you would paint it a light color to make it look bigger, a bigger room can take a little bit darker tone. but the story that we are talking about today is about super neutral. a super neutral is any shade that s made a little bit more gentler, a little bit more bland by the addition of whites, creams, grays, all of these colors that you see in front of me. these have all been a little bit neutraliz neutralized. you are getting color in that room without that knock-you-over color. right. i don t look liking down a hall and seeing a room that s so vibrant it sort of like disturbs you. would you do an entire room in a color like this? by the way, do you paint the ceiling? i do, but not necessarily the same color as the walls and woodwork. i like the walls to be one color, the woodwork to be another texture of that color, like a semi-gloss or gloss. the walls can be flat. then the ceiling could be, if you re going to do dolphins on the walls, how about trying calabesh on the ceiling. and paint, can you always repaint. i know. it is an easy way to decorate and if you make a mistake, you can cover it up. here you ve used a super neutral on the wall. yes. we have a beautiful color called ash bark. then the trim is a neutral twine. it s just a slight difference. just a slight difference. and then we went to consignment shops and found two very nice tables. they were good tables at one time, they were probably nicked or chipped. they re about the same height. we painted both tables the same color. but you wouldn t saint them t the same color as the wall. these are called blue fur. then you can have different tables but always make something consistent, like the lamps. you painted the lamp shades? yeah, we painted the lamp shades. this is a paper shade. just take a very nice brush, like a good bristle brush, and paint all in the same direction. i thinks it looks really nice. the lamp base is also painted. is there one mistake people tend to make when painting? in at least choosing a color. yeah, choosing a color, either something that doesn t go with anything else you have in the home? right. and then painting the woodwork a very, very bold color that really stands out. i find that like white woodwork, a lot of people think woodwork has to be white. but then when you look at the white window you don t see what s outside the window. then you can add other colors to your room. you can actually paint a lot. you can paint a tray like this which brings another color in to your room. you can add color by just pillows. i m not going to paint the pillows. but we don t have to live in a white and beige world anymore. no, we do not. color is relaxing and beautiful. we don t want people to make big mistakes. that s why we ve come up with all these great ideas. thank you, martha. an inside look at the college application process. three teens share their highs and unfortunately, some lows as well cockledoodledooooo! i do 22 more inspections than the government requires. and my fresh, all-natural chickens are never given any hormones or steroids. .and no candy, gladys. [ clucks ] [ male announcer ] perdue. extra inspections. extraordinary chicken. this morning on today s classroom, picking the right college. decision day is arriving for this year s crop of high school seniors and with competition fierce, many students will not get into their first and second choices. in a partnership with the new york times blog the choice, we gave three students cameras to capture the emotions of being accepted and rejected. i m a senior at deer park high school. my name ann peak and i go to school in los angeles, california. hello. my name is brian and i m a senior at chest wood high school. reporter: brent, ann and brian have spent the past few weeks checking the mailbox for acceptance letters. as the acceptance letters trickled in, the cameras rolled. brian applied to some of the best theater programs in the country. there was good news. you say you re from ucsc? reporter: some disappointing news. i didn t get in. reporter: and one big surprise. welcome. congratulations. that s a big one! how much does school cost? today we re going to pay a visit to rice. i haven t heard from them yet. reporter: brett is ranked sixth in the class of 500, captain of the wrestling team and an ap scholar. as a texas resident with these credentials, he was virtually guaranteed a spot at up in austin but he failed to send his board scores on time. the thing that hit me the most is procrastination can come back to bite me. reporter: and a distinguished student and editor of a school paper. i just worry myself to death about getting into college. reporter: she applied to 15 schools, including some of the nation s most prestigious universities. she was accepted to three university of california schools. it is nice to know that i got into college and that i have backup. reporter: but then rejections flooded in. my parents told me that it was okay, that, you know, it was fine that i didn t get in and they still really loved and supported me. you know that phrase what doesn t kill you only makes you stronger? well, i got 12 rejections. i should be wonder woman right now. dear brett, i am sorry to inform you that we have been able to offer you admission. reporter: brett applied to seven schools and is wait-listed at two. the university of texas at austin did accept him for the spring semester in 2011. missing that deadline has cost me, you know, going to school on time. reporter: ann will be attending ucla on scholarship. i am going to look into the future and just, you know, go to ucla, graduate and have fun. reporter: brian has narrowed it down to two schools. financial aid may be a deciding factor. wherever place i go, i know i m going to make the most of every opportunity because i have to. that was the right attitude. how can you help your teen evaluate their college options? josh steinberg, education reporter for the new york times and author of the gate keepers, inside the admissions process of a premier college. good morning. most of the things we re talking about is kids and how they handle this process but what can parents do to facilitate the decision making? if you ve got acceptance and waiting-list choice you re weighing, sort of help gently guide, if possible take your child to a particular campus to see it. take another look? if it is within range. take a look on the web as well. but you don t want to sort of push too hard. but it s never too late to visit. it is not essential to visit if the visit is not possible. what about the wait list? there are so many kids who are on wait list this year. is there anything you can do to get off that list? the colleges want to know that you re interested and so we have a piece in the new york times today about the waiting list at duke. the dean of admission at duke says that he wants to hear from everybody on the wait list who s interested with a letter of not more than a page or page and a half just sort of saying what you re up to and why you re interested if that particular college. so it s good to be a little bit of a nudge then. but don t cross the line into obnoxious. express interest, realize these are human beings that have a lot of decisions to make but don t be shy about letting them know that if they offer you an opportunity to come, you will come if indeed you will come. okay. in many families obviously, financial aid can be the deciding factor. is that negotiable at all? they hate to use the word negotiable, but i think this is a case where a parent can make a difference, can advocate, go to the financial aid officer. first, sometimes financial aid officers makes mistakes and you want to make sure you ve gotten as much as possible. but also don t be shy about letting a college know if one college came up with a little more money than another college with one caveat some colleges give merit aid and some colleges give need-based aid. a college that does not give merit aid, like one of the ivy league colleges, they re not going to be able to match the offer from a school that provides aid just on the basis of merit. if you, like brett in this piece, if you didn t get in any colleges, what are your options? brett has a couple of options. he can attend the university of texas at austin in the spring. yes, he will have to start a few months after his classmates but he does have an option. he s also still on two waiting lists so he wants to let those colleges know, one of them being rice, that he s interested in coming if they ll take him. but again, for those kids who might not get in, there is also something called a gap year, which is a wonderful thing as well. sure, you can take a year off but it s important for people to remember, there s 2,000 four-year colleges in this country, and almost all of them take almost everybody who applies. we re talking here this morning about a really narrow sliver of a big universe. my heart still goes out to those kids when they get that little nfl. josh steinberg, thank you so much. up next, moms who moonlight as private eyes, but first this is today on nbc. 8:52. we re back with a group of working moms who have a rather unexpected career. here with the story featured in people magazine is nbc s janet schamlian. reporter: they re not unlike multi-tasking moms all over america. how are you going to add them up then? not exactly. i d like to have one team in place at 6:00 a.m. you want to bring one or two teams in case we have to file on foot and change our look later? did we get the gps attached to the car? reporter: though chris butler who employs the women gets his fair share of comparisons to his tv counterpart charlie. that s where we come in, charlie? i m holding her right now, yeah. she s okay. she s got bites all over her. she s got some scratches. she s very lucid. she has no major injuries. just exposure. i m going to give her some liquids. i ve got some stuff prepared for her. the lord told me where to find her. reporter: the caller was james king, a searcher from the bloom family s church who at dawn had ventured into the woods alone. i would call, nadia, i d be praying, talking to the lord. the lord would be directing me. one time i said, nadia? i heard, what? i said i m going that one. the 911 operator asks to speak to nadia. hi, this is nadia. i m the girl that was lost. i m one of the dispatchers from the police department. if you just stay with that man right where you are, we re going to have somebody come to you right now. reporter: word that nadia had been rescued spread fast and electrified the community. she s alive! she s here. reporter: nadia who has a mild form of autism disappeared friday afternoon in a wooded area close to home in winter springs, florida. nadia was dehydrated and suffering from mosquito bites but very much alive. her parents waited nervously to see her. her emotional father later hugging james king. things don t always turn out this way. reporter: doctors treating nadia said, given all she had been through, she actually was doing wonderfully. she was smiling. her vitals were stable. she clearly has had the effects of being outside now for about five days. reporter: for police and the entire community, nadia s rescue was a huge relief. nadia is now out of the hospital and the police chief says he is absolutely convinced that james king is a real hero. he also says if he didn t believe in miracles before, he sure does now. natalie? jean, first extensions. if you haven t made it, you can absolutely file for an extension. you ll get an automatic six months but you ve got to remember this is an extension to file, it is not an extension to pay. and if you owe the irs money and you ve basically known based on how much you earned this year based on last year, write them a check so you don t face large interest and penalties. sharon, because of some of the rough weather across the country, some places are actually granted extensions. definitely file. first, make sure you file your taxes on april 15th so you don t get a penalty. for residents in four states massachusetts, rhode island, new jersey and west virginia if you were a victim of a flood, if you re in a federal disaster area, declared so by the president, your county may be able to give you some tax relief. that means you may not have to pay your taxes until may 11th. you may get that automatic extension. the irs already knows automatically who those folks are. it also is an extension to pay your tax if you owe it and an extension to actually contribute to your i.r.a. for it to count for 2009. that s good to know as well. david, people are getting ready to seal the envelope up. before they do, are there tax credits? there are some new ones this year. go to irs.gov. they re on the front of their website. one is the environmental credit. called the go green credit. if you ve done any home improvements to your house that are environmentally friendly, there is a $1,500 tax credit for that this year and there is a tax credit for college class, called the american opportunities credit. up to $2,500. that s for parents who have been paying for college costs. all of that information is on irs.gov. great resources to help you get your taxes done last minute. start off with the viewer questions. a video question sent in from laura in new york. let s check out the video. my questions relate to the recent student reform loan bill. i heard beginning in 2014 annual student loan payments will be capped at 10% of the borrower s income and any remaining balance unpaid after 25 years will be forgiven. one, does this apply only to new loans obtained after passage of the bill or will my older student loans qualify? and, two, does this apply only to my subsidized and unsubsidized federal stafford loans or will my private graduate student loans also qualify? a lot of questions. very few minutes. here s the deal. it was part of the health care bill actually and, yes, you re right. starting in 2014 paying back on those subsidized student loans on the federal student loans will be capped at 10% of your income which is great. it does not apply to any of your old loans which actually answers both of those questions that you asked. but it doesn t mean there s no option available to you. if you re having trouble paying, look into income-based repayment. that went into effect last year and you may actually find based on your income, if you don t make a huge amount of money, that your payments will be capped and then at the end of 25 years you won t owe anymore more. now to skype, nick calling in checking in from wake forest, north carolina. he s got a question. nick? hello. my wife and i have built a great nest egg, professional i.r.a.s and equity in our home. but i recently started a new career, started a new 401(k) and i still have a small student loan that s just kind of hanging out there. my question is, should i put my retirement savings on hold so i can focus on trying to pay that student loan off quickly? seems like a great time to be investing but i also don t want to be paying off my student loan when my 1-year-old daughter starts school in about 17 years. all right. well, david, i think i know the answer to this but go ahead. the simple answer is, no, do not stop using your 401(k) plan because you have to save for retirement. the best gift parents can give their kids is to not need to sleep on their couch when they grow up. you want to have a retirement account. also here s the key to these student loans. it is the interest rate. we asked you before the show what is interest rate is. i heard you got i think it is a stafford loan, your payment s 4.25%. that s an extremely low rate. we call that free money. you know what i would do? keep using your 401(k) plan. but i want you to double that down on those payments on your student loans. reality is if you just take that minimum student loan and you double it, you re going to pay that debt down in half the time. that will be a huge relief to you. i would have said this if it was a private student loan. if rates were 10%, 11%, i d have you reduce the 401(k) contributions just a little bit and pay extra on the student loan. even if you don t feel like you can completely double a payment, just adding a few extra dollars will get you out in many fewers years. contributing up to the company match is just the key for retirement planning. after that, some of that money can be put to other retirement buckets or also to pay off this loan. now let s go to the street, natalie s got the question. i have the lovely sherry here visiting from ohio. what s your question? my husband and i have been helping put five kids through college so we ve been remiss in saving for our retirement. i was wondering would a roth i.r.a. be a good way to get started? what should they do? i think a roth i.r.a. is a great way to get started. one of the things you may want to do first is see how much you really owe and go to choosetosave.org. that will give you a ballpark estimate on how much you need for retirement. the other thing, start this roth i.r.a., you can contribute up to $5,000 for this year. if you hurry up and get it in before april 15th, do it for 2009 and do it again for 2010. jumpstart that. then think about what kinds of things can you do in terms of adding to your income. are you working right now? i work part-time and we re working to get our mortgage paid off. that s great thing to do as well. but really think about perhaps extending the amount of time you may have to work. a lot of folks think i got to stop working at 65. you don t have to stop working all together. if you are working part-time and you enjoy it, think of your retirement as something that will supplement your income, not keep you from working all together. teams, stand by. more advice coming up, including where to find the extra cash for a down payment on a if you home. then later on if all these money issues have you stressed out, how about some comfort food? meredith asked kate all about the pressure and what the book i just want you to know is all about. when people heard were you writing this book, a lot of people assumed it was going to be a jon-bashing book. and it is anything but that. you talk about your relationship as a married couple trying to raise these eight kids. you also make some confessions about yourself and jon. you say much of what i said to jon was unwarranted. could i have watched what i said better, could have guarded my tongue better. what have you learned about yourself, kate? i learned that in the heat of the moment i have a sharp tongue and looking back, there is probably a lot of people that i love that i probably spoke to inappropriately. and those are the people that are beside you to support you and love you sorry and i ve really learned to watch what i say. do you regret the things you said to jon along the way? i love it. i ll make two sandwiches, one turkey and one more classic. with the turkey one, i ll grill it in the sandwich grill. i m using a rustic country style of white bread. butter both sides. with this turkey sandwich, it is also delicious with walnut bread. start with cheese and end with the cheese. always when you make your sandwich. start with cheese, end with cheese. that s what we believe in this program. that s the glue. start with cheese and end with cheese. layering a little turkey. what kind of cheese if. i m using a cheddar cheese that has sage in it. a little softened leeks, celery. a little bit of crunch and a little bit of thanksgiving flavor. i ll decorate it with sage leafs. you ve got green there so it is healthy. i ve got one ready. let me take that one out. gently close it. don t smash i. people think you have to press it down, but you press the life out of the bread when you do that. i love the smell of the sage. that s for you to try. i have to. we ll move over and do a little classic more cheese. good. thanksgiving in a bite. step over here and do the next one with me. start with your butter. again, don t skimp on the butter. never. this one we re doing old school in the cast iron pan. you never want to not make something delicious if you don t have the right equipment. cast iron skillet. open it up, start with layering in a little mozzarella. we re doing three kinds of cheese. gruyere. which is my favorite. i love the way it melts. it is really stringy. then grate a little parmesan on top. for that green, healthy look, stick a little arugula in between the layers. grate a little sharp parmesan on. maybe i should use you know what would be even better? hold on a second. just take a slice of it! a and voila! let s see how this one is. not ready to turn yet. and yet we ve got a couple of different ones here. yeah. that s one that has some italian cured meat. prosciutto, a little italian salami, and cheese. that s good. oh, that s so good. what about the classic american cheese, white bread, tomato soup, the one we grew up on?
