WRC Today July 19, 2010
you should assume if he makes it down the aisle in one piece it s a major accomplishment. the inside scoop today, it s a major accomplishment. the inside scoop today, monday, july 19, 2010. captions paid for by nbc-universal television and good morning. welcome to today on a monday morning. i m matt lauer. i m ann curry in for meredith this morning. a lot of people were hoping this new cap would temporarily stop the flow of oil into the gulf, but overnight there are signs it may have created a new leak or seep elsewhere in the well. obviously of great concern to people. the government and bp seem to be at odds. bp wants to keep the cap closed at least for now. but in a sternly worded letter sent overnight the man in charge of the government s response is demanding a detailed plan for re-opening the cap if that becomes necessary. we re going to get the latest on this story coming up in a couple of minutes. also, matt, kyron horman s stepmother has moved out of the home. the impact of her move and what impact it may have on the police investigation. you may be enjoying coffee this morning, but should the kids be doing the same thing? coffee drinks are all the rage among young adults, even children. is it leading to new health problems? we ll talk about that later in the program. let s begin with the seep found near bp s crippled well and what it could mean for the disaster in the gulf. nbc s chief environmental affairs correspondent anne thompson is in venice, louisiana. anne, good morning to you. reporter: good morning, matt. it has been a long night for bp engineers and government scientists as they have been monitoring that seep that is some distance from the wellhead. and they have also been looking at possible methane over the wellhead. and after meetings and after promises of extensive monitoring, thad allen gave bp the go ahead to continue the test for another 24 hours. overnight, word came of the seep and possible methane found near the busted oil well, potential signs of a leak. for four straight days the cap has been doing what once seemed impossible, holding back the flow of crude that s polluted much of the gulf coast for three months. earlier, on sunday, bp s doug suttles suggested the cap could remain on until the relief well is finished. we are hopeful that in the encouraging signs continue we ll be able to continue the integrity tests all the way to the point where we can get the well killed. reporter: the government isn t sure. the pressure level is at 6,792 pounds per square inch, above the danger zone but far from ideal and bubbles have been seen in two locations. bp says they are not uncommon but are doing tests to see what the source is. national incident commander admiral thad allen is pleased no oil is going into the gulf but says the government needs to understand the lower-than-expected pressure readings. sunday he wrote, it is important that all decisions are driven by the science. ultimately, we must ensure no irreversible damage is done which could cause uncontrolled leakage from numerous points on the seafloor. in gulf shores, alabama, water carried more oil to the beaches. where there should be tourists, there are cleanup workers. darryl finley who runs a bed & breakfast. try to get this cleaned up so we can at least have a decent living here. people can come back and enjoy the gulf coast. reporter: now, among the monitoring that s going on out at the leak site, there are rovs with cameras, sonar, temperature tests at the blowout preventer. so far the tests show that the water is about 40 degrees and that is good news. if it was any warmer that would indicate that oil was coming out. matt? all right. anne thompson in venice, louisiana. thanks for your report. we appreciate it. five minutes after the hour. here s ann. matt, thanks. hillary clinton is in pakistan trying to shore up support for u.s. efforts in the region. andrea mitchell is traveling with her. reporter: good morning, ann. hillary clinton is trying to push the pakistanis to go after insurgents killing u.s. troops in afghanistan. that means overcoming years of distrust between the u.s. and pakistan. today, she came bearing economic aid, water and electricity projects desperately needed here. still, public opinion toward the u.s. remains negative, even hostile. so we know that there is some questioning, even suspicion about what the united states is doing today. i can only respond by saying that very clearly we have a commitment that is much broader and deeper than it has ever been. reporter: one achievement, she witnessed the signing of a long delayed sign and trade agreement between pakistan and afghanistan, decades in the making. she acknowledged frustration with pakistan s efforts against al qaeda. again, saying that elements in pakistan s government know where osama bin laden is and could get him if they wanted to. in an interview with nbc news do you still believe that? i do. there is a bit of a debate going on within certain elements of the pakistani government. our argument is very simple. look, you ve got to take on every nongovernmental armed force inside your country, because even though you think they won t bother you today, there is no guarantee. it s like keeping a poisonous snake in your backyard. reporter: in a decades old terror case, pan am 103, clinton said the government has told her there is no evidence bp pushed the decision to release abdelbaset al-megrahi. it may be that there is nothing to be done about it which is deeply frustrating. reporter: while she juggles, war, diplomacy and terror a world away, in less than two weeks, chelsea s wedding. you handle a lot of state secrets and classified information. there is no more closely guarded secret than well, the locale has leaked, but the guest list, the arrangements. what has gone into keeping this so private? my lips are sealed, andrea. i am under very strict orders not to talk about it. and i think for the right reason. it s chelsea s wedding. it is a family wedding. the people coming are her friends, as it should be. reporter: before she can get back to being mother of the bride, clinton has to go to afghanistan and south korea, all in a day s work for a busy secretary of state. ann? thank you so much. we ll hear more about the up coming wedding coming up. for now, it is 7:08. here s matt. thank you very much. has the u.s. intelligence community become too bloated since 9/11? the washington post is out with what it calls the most comprehensive study of the system since the terror attacks. pete williams has the details on this. pete, good morning. reporter: matt, good morning to you. the newspaper says the u.s. intelligence apparatus has become so big that nobody knows anymore how much it costs, how many people work for it or how effective it is. the post says much of the growth comes from an explosion in hiring private contractors to do sensitive government work. since the 9/11 attacks of 2001, the post reports, the intelligence community has been growing so fast in the washington, d.c. area that 33 building complexes for top secret work have gone up or are under construction, totaling 17 million square feet. it is really exciting to come and spend time in this fine facility and to meet the men and women who work at the national counterterrorism center. reporter: the 9/11 attacks sent the nation scrambling to find new ways to gather information on the emerging threat. now the post says more than 1,200 separate organizations and over 1,900 government contractors work on top secret terrorism, security and intelligence programs. they re scattered around the country at more than 10,000 locations. no question, say intelligence experts, the system has produced good results, but is a work in progress. there are parts of the intelligence community that do an extremely good job in dealing with the terrorism threat. but there are other parts since 9/11 that are still trying to figure out their role. reporter: the post says the system is bogged down with overlaps. example, 26 separate agencies analyze intelligence churning out more than 50,000 classified reports a year. the post says it found more than 50 separate federal organizations and military commands looking at terror financing, working in 15 cities. much of that growth in the intelligence community, the newspaper says, has come from private contractors. the former director of national intelligence, dennis blair, said a year ago at his confirmation hearing that the trend worried him. you have to get it right. you have to keep the government functions by people who get their paychecks every two weeks from the government and i will get into that issue. reporter: the man nominated to replace blair, general james clapper, has his hearing tomorrow. he ll be sure to be asked about the questions raised in this, matt. pete, thank you very much. diana priest, a pulitzer-prize winning journalist in the post writes the story. good morning to you. good morning, matt. pete talked about 1200 government organizations, 1931 contractors spread across 10,000 locations. we are talking about the stuff of national security, top secret information. how can we keep it secret if so many people in so many locations have access to it? well, frankly, they have a system for giving security clearance to people in the system. the 1,900 contractors are really large companies. so we re talking about close to 250,000 contractor who have top secret clearances. the reason we looked at top secret level is when we started to look at the secret level which is below that, it was simply too large to count. so we needed to go one step further. really, what we set out to do is to create a database which you can see online yourself and play around with and look at the redundancies and how big this has gotten. what we came up two years later with was really, i call an alternative geography of the united states where the capitol is not washington, d.c. it s somewhere else. based on the concentration of both government organizations and private contractors. remember after 9/11, everyone was talking about the fact that we had the intelligence but we weren t talking to each other, we weren t coordinating. when you look at the organizations spread out, even looking into financing, analyzing intelligence, is it possible that all these different groups can communicate with each other? well, that s the crux of the matter. there has been some advance a lot of advance in intelligence sharing among different agencies. but at the same time, the system has grown so large that many managers of it don t even know what all is out there. as a consequence cannot share throughout the community because they don t have a sense of how large that s become. one of the surprising things to me and bill arken who put together this database is how little the government itself knows how big it s grown because it is broken down into its different departments. there is a lot of interest in what we were doing and we got a lot of help from people inside the department of defense and other intelligence agencies who are curious about our findings. yeah, you raised some eyebrows. i know you spoke to robert gates, the secretary of defense. his opinion was and i m not sure he got to look at all the information yet, but his opinion seemed to be that it is not too big. he didn t actually say that. he said it s manageable, but it s based on ad hoc relationships, personal relationships. he said it does need to be examined and he s going to do that. he said it needs to be trimmed, that he knows there is waste. on counterterrorism he said, that s so important we need to do it with a scalpel, not an ax. he s committed, he told me, to undertake a review of all the programs. same with cia director leon pinetta who said we can t afford this anymore. he started creating a five-year plan. it s because of the deficit. it s also because they know this has become so large that there are some inefficiencies. couple quick things. what did you learn after the ft. hood accideincident, after the christmas day attempted bombing? what did we learn about weaknesses in the system? more is not always better. bigger is not always better. with ft. hood you had the main army counterintelligence organization which is about 15 miles up the road from walter reed where the alleged ft. hood shooter resided. they were doing something different. they weren t looking within their own ranks. they had chosen to go out and look at what fbi agents and other organizations have looked at which is the presence of terrorist organizations within the united states and not do the job they were meant to do which is to look in the army ranks. it s more difficult. as a result, they had no clue. they had never heard his name. they had no clue when he started talking in strange ways about islam that he even existed. i just want to get in one more thing. the president s choice for director of national intelligence goes through confirmation hearings in the senate this week. if you could sit down and ask mr. clapper one important question, what would you want to ask him? we actually did and he responded on the record. that is, do you believe that you know the most sensitive programs within the department of defense and the intelligence community? he said there is only one entity in the universe that would know all that and that s god. diana priest of the washington post. unbelievable report. thanks for joining us. thanks for having me. now a check on the top stories from natalie morales at the news desk. good morning. tragedy in india where two trains collided killing more than 60 people and injuring more than 100. it happened when a speeding train hit another that was stopped at a station. the force of the crash threw the roof of one train onto the tracks above. officials haven t ruled out sabotage. a wildfire destroyed at least three homes and threatens more year yakima. it s burned more than 10,000 acres. officials in kentucky think they have accounted for everyone after weekend flash flooding that killed two people, washed away homes and knocked out power to thousands. a state of emergency was declared in the their. take a look at these dramatic scenes from southern china where weekend storms left more than 20 people home. the storms forced more than half a million people to evacuate. overseas markets are mostly lower after friday s big 261-point drop in the dow. erin burnett is at the stock exchange. we have optimism at the start and one of the lead stories is about boeing, america s biggest exporter. they are going to get a big plane deal. the world s biggest air show is under way in england. boeing sold 30 of the 777 jets to emirates airlines. the deal could be worth more than $9 million and they expect additional deals over the next few days. more planes means the economic recovery is still on the road to recovery. we ll take it as good news on a monday. thank you. nelson mandela celebrated his 92nd birthday sunday. the former south african president spending the day with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in johannesburg. sunday was marked as mandela day around the world. and sunday s first victory at the british open. when he received the trophy he said people have to learn to pronounce his last name. you said west-hysen. i have heard woost . they call him shrek. good for him. mr. roker, how was your weekend? miguel, thank you very much. clint van zant is a former criminal profiler. good morning. good morning, ann. we should mention once again that terri horman has not been named a person of interest, not been charged with a crime, yet you think her move out of the family home this weekend is significant. now, why is that? i think it s significant for law enforcement. there are some positives and negative. the negative is as the set-up piece suggested, she s moved about 160 miles away. that makes it harder for local investigators working the case to continue to conduct any type of surveillance or anything else they want to do to her. so it stretches it. the other side, ann, is that it continues to put pressure, whether she s been named a suspect or a person of interest. the court of public opinion has already convicted her. notwithstanding that, law enforcement keeps an open mind, but on somebody like this who allegedly has told stories, lies, tried to hire hitmen, engaged in extramarital affairs while this was going on, if any of these allegations are actually true, i think what law enforcement wants to do is keep the pressure on her. ann, just like in the oil spill, we re looking for some type of crack, some type of fissure, but in this case it s in her story which may suggest to law enforcement what happened to this little boy. cane horman is making the suggestion that there is a possible third party involved. what do you make of this? what are the chances that this might be true? i think to hold onto the hope that this little boy s alive you have to hold onto the idea that there is a third party, that there is some individual that we don t know that s out there somewhere that has secreted kyron, that s holding him, waiting for whoever the prime kidnapper was to say, okay, bring him forward, the story is over with now. if we don t allow for that, there is very little hope that this little boy could be alive. for investigators, they now have to go back at least six or seven months, at least to the time when she allegedly tried to hire a hitman to kill her husband and then go through her cell phone and her computer, anybody she had contact with. if there is this mysterious second person that could have been involved with her, who is he or she? where are they? how do we find them? you talk about the cell phone messages. there are reports about text messages with a neighbor named michael cook. these are apparently intimate messages. what are investigators doing behind the scenes? how do you expect them to be treating him based on this new information? well, they are trying to get anything they can out of him. realize that if, in fact, a story of seven months ago of her trying to hire a hitman is true, i think law enforcement has to say, was this part two? was he going to be some type of a hitman, associate or was this just personal? was this just terri horman was lonesome, needed somebody to be with and this was the way she was going to do it. where does he fit into this puzzle? are there other people like him that haven t been identified yet in this fractured family, missing boy situation. still a lot of questions. it s been six weeks since his good morning. at this hour, it is mostly cloudy, warm, and humid around the washington metro area. and temperatures here are in the 70s. we ll have highs today climbing into the low 90s and there s a small chance of a passing afternoon thunderstorm. around the metro area, though, and east, a little bit greater chance, a 50% chance of storms this afternoon into early this evening. years on the run, 19-year-old colton harris moore will be returning to his home state of washington. good morning. reporter: matt, good morning to you. this is a secret process when federal inmates are transferred, but u.s. marshalls say moore could be moved back to washington state as early as this week. there is one thing certain. when the barefoot bandit, accused of stealing at least five planes he won t be the pilot but a passenger, in chains. the so-called barefoot bandit has been paraded through the bahamas in shackles and marched into u.s. federal court. when colton harris moore is back in seattle, his lawyer may ask that he be allowed out on bond. it is not inconceivable that i may try to get him released on electronic home monitoring or something like that. reporter: it seems unlikely since he started his life on the lam by escaping a halfway house more than two years ago. he s accused of dozens of burglaries and thefts in nine states. if that s proven it entitles him to a harsher sentence. i don t believe the justice system works like costco with a discount. reporter: he got a rude awakening friday. sitting in federal court, side by side with an accused carjacker and kidnapper. harris-moore didn t say a word. the attorney for his mother tells nbc news she s elated her son will be coming home safe despite a rocky history between them. she asked the system for help. she asked the school system, the legal system for help for colt consistently from a very young age and didn t get very much. reporter: harris-moore s former partner in crime is back behind bars charged with felony assault in washington state after knocking over an 85-year-old shopper last month while allegedly trying to shoplift five packages of cheese. earlier this year in a jailhouse interview he tosaid he taught harris-moore how to break into homes and steal. my dream, which he shared with me, was having so much money that we could just bathe in it. reporter: harris-moore is celebrated by more than 90,000 fans on facebook. a new page demands the barefoot bandit be convicted. the lawyer for his mother says she understands he could spend time behind bars but she hopes he ll get a college education and one day make a living as a pilot. that s ironic. thank you. we appreciate that. up next, the five-second rule debunked. important information on food safety. later on, lots of speculation about chelsea clinton s wedding. where will it be? who s invited? what will she wear? we ll have answers, but first these messages. great. yea, mom you re the best. i thought you would like it. so, how are your classes, are you enjoying them? who is invited? what will the bride wear? we have natalie morales upstairs with the details we have so far. some call it the wedding of the century. chelsea clinton has never been one to seek out the spotlight, but when dad is a former president and mom is the secretary of state, your wedding is bound to be an affair. the clinton family knows a thing or two about national security. but keeping all the details at chelsea s wedding under wraps, that s near but impossible. this is as close to a royal wedding as america is going to see. reporter: chelsea, now 30 is marrying marc mezvinsky whose parents were both democratic members of congress. the bride and groom first met as teens but didn t become a couple until several years ago. the vows are set for the last day in july. word leaked this month that it will be held in a beautiful, secluded, versailles-style mansion two hours north of new york city. it s located in reinbeck and it is beautiful. there are 30 acres surrounding it. it overlooks the hudson river. reporter: there is plenty of curiosity about the guest lists with reports it could include a-listers from hollywood to washington. we have heard steven spielberg, ted turner, barbra streisand. president obama was invited. his press secretary said that he won t attend. who knows? reporter: secretary clinton spoke to andrea mitchell. your message to all the people out there waiting for an invitation a-listers, b-listers? we love you all, but this is her wedding. reporter: chelsea, the clinton s only child, has come a long way from the teenager who grew up in the white house. today, she has an elegant poise and style and an impressive career as a hedge fund manager to match. a bride who knows who she is and what she wants on her big day. my daughter has really taken hold of it. she knows what she wants and how she wants to have it come off. the former president, your husband, performed a wedding ceremony. should we assume he won t be officiating? you should assume that if he makes it down the aisle in one piece, it s a major accomplishment. he is you know, he s going to be so emotional, as am i. but we re both looking forward to it and very happy about it. so a lot of you may be wondering, what about the dress? sources say chelsea will wear a custom-designed dress made by oscar de la renta. she ll make a beautiful bride. thanks, natalie. cheryl, good morning. you have had fun. you wrote about the wedding so cloaked in secrecy where the mother of the bride holds down national diplomacy details are harder to ferret out than the afghanistan strategy. what did the invitation say? how do people know where to go? the invitations are save the date with just the date and no information about where it will be held. people were told to get yourself within new york city driving distance. we ll give you the details with a week to go. so we don t know if it is at this estate we saw in the piece, but the chances are pretty good because the chances are pretty good. first of all, it is within driving distance of new york. it s a lovely place, secluded on 50 acres, owned by clinton donors, kathleen hammond and her husband who is a real estate developer. it s easy to get to. people could conceivably get to new york and then drive 90 miles to this lovely estate. meantime, the secretary of state who is very busy in pakistan has referred to herself as the m.o.t.b., the mother of the bride. she s been more hands-on than people might expect. she s been absolutely hands- hands-on. she s been viewing flower arrangements, tastings, dress selections. she s obviously excited as is her husband, the former president. they are both close to their only child. yes. you have done reporting about this. how close are they? very close. when bill clinton was president he put off an overseas trip to stay home and study with chelsea for her exams. they are obviously a tight family. we know chelsea could have held them together when they had rocky times in their marriage. this is a happy ending for all of them. jenna bush interviewed him and he said, i hope i can keep it together as i walk down the aisle. this is an emotional moment for him. meantime, you think she ll wear an up-do. do i. did you see her hair? she s obviously growing it out. as soon as i saw that i thought, oh, mere come here comes the up and who is on the guest list? the guest list is small by clinton standards, about 400 people which is big for you and me but intimate for people who know kings, presidents and hollywood stars. to make the cut you have to be a friend of chelsea and marc. all the big-time donors, we love you, but it s chelsea s wedding. so the reports that oprah and barbra streisand are on the list we know matt lauer isn t. we know some very close friends, people like harry th thomason and his wife. president obama who is hillary clinton s boss is on the list. but the white house says he won t go. that makes sense. he travels with a big press entourage and they are trying to keep it secret. you cover families and you have a deeper understanding about our fascination with the presidential children. what explains why we are so interested? well, we don t have royalty in this country. i think we are particularly fascinated with chelsea because she was a gawky teenager, grew into a lovely young woman. everyone remembers the picture of her walking to the helicopter with her parents holding the hand of each after the president confessed to infidelity. people wondered, how is this kid going to turn out and she s obviously turned out really well. it s a nice ending. it s like we all want to cheer for her. right. thank you very much. no problem. coming up next, kids and coffee. it s a growing habit, but is it a healthy one? we ll get into that right after this. male announcer ] fact. when pain keeps you up, nothing is proven to help you fall asleep faster than advil pm liqui-gels. rushing real liquid relief to ease you to sleep fast. for nighttime pain, make advil pm your #1 choice. over a thousand people a day are switching to chevy. they like that vehicles like the 2010 malibu, traverse and silverado half-ton have each been named a consumers digest best buy. they like that chevy backs the quality with a one-hundred-thousand mile powertrain warranty. they re not just trading in, they re trading up. qualified lessees now get a low mileage lease on this malibu ls for around one ninety-nine a month. call for details. the switch begins at chevydealer.com. blue shirt: great. well, with every laptop, you get a geek so. take your pick. mom: look at all these fabulous geeks! there are so many! look at this one! it helps you video chat with mom! son: bingo! mom: look at this one. you can video chat with me, honey. son: mom, go get the car. mom: he s in such a hurry to learn. vo: buy any laptop and get geek squad support for six months. online. on the phone, or in-store. caramel frappuccino this morning on eat smart today, kids and coffee. walk by any coffee shop and you can t help but notice their newest consumers are kids, teens and young adults. one in three young adults is now a regular coffee drinker. is it a good habit to start so young? this morning newsweek is out with a compelling story that tries to get to the bottom of the beauty bias. we all know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but could it help you land a job? miranda hires me. she knows what i look like. beauty bias is the idea that when someone makes the decision to hire you, they re not just looking at your resumé but at you and how you look. reporter: we have heard before attractive people have a leg up. that s the first impression when people look at you and the way you are groomed. reporter: a new survey including hiring managers says we still pay a lot of attention to attraction. 72% admit that being physically attractive is beneficial to a woman looking for work. with the unemployment rate at 9.5% the competition to get a job these days is tough. if you re a manager, is it fair to look at somebody and say, are they polished, professional, do they look put together and like they care about their appearance? yes, of course. on the other hand, if you re looking at every applicant that looks through the door saying do you look like gisele, it won t be a good staff. that s not an intelligent way to make hiring decisions. reporter: if looks get you in the door, how far can they take you? i think there is favoritism but i don t think it has anything to do with your ability. you have to have the education. if you haven t got that you may as well hang it up. reporter: in the end, good looks alone won t get the job done. i think a manager at work wants to know that you care enough about your appearance to be able to project professionalism ton jon the job. they don t want you thinking about your highlights when you should be thinking about the bottom line. jessica bennett wrote the article and we have the editorial director for latina magazine. good morning. hi. you conducted the survey online. 202 corporate managers? right. we surveyed 1,000 people of the general public on the phone. the statistics we are finding, 72% is for men and women? > mm-hmm. so it affects men as well as women? women face it more. there is pressure to look a certain way. it also affects men for sure. what s your reaction to the numbers? it s not surprising. this was written about in the beauty myth 20 years ago. at the time it caused a stir. since then the problem has only become worse. we are much more obsessed with looks than ever before. is it raw beauty in men or women or is it how well put together we are? it s a combination. we want to make sure we distinguish between wearing a clean shirt to an interview and being physically attractive. one of the most surprising numbers was among women. hiring managers said 61% said that wearing revealing clothing would help a woman at work. would help a woman? maybe not if she was being hired by a woman. perhaps. there is definitely the girl-on-girl competition but at the same time women may also not want that kind of thing there is a pressure women get with each other that they want a professional environment. sure. it s a double-edged sword. last month we saw a latina woman suing citibank here in new york for allegedly hiring her for being too hot. there is a bit of a double-edged sword. i cut you off. i m sorry. 46% of hiring managers said that you can also be punished for being too good-looking, particularly if you re a woman. so the net impact because a lot of women are looking for jobs. obviously we have to spend more attention on our looks than we may have thought before. what s your best advice to men and women on this score? it goes back for centuries. it comes back to the point that these pheremones, these primal chemicals are what attract us to each other. when a woman is pregnant and a man is committed to her, the testosterone levels drop. the nesting hormone, prolactin goes up, and it s to keep the man at home so he won t stray. after the birth things reverse so men start thinking about procreating again. it s mother nature s plan. i started getting into things i didn t care about before like the color of the nursery and stuff like this. i learned about separating science from anxiety. oh, my gosh i m responsible for this human being for the rest of my life. it was interesting looking at the symptoms, the nesting getting the furniture built, painting the nursery. you want to create a safe place for someone. there are symptoms. i noticed my breasts got bigger. breasts, tummy. put on weight, nausea. all the fake pregnancy symptoms you see in women, men can sometimes get. it s not unusual for a guy to put on 15, 20 pounds. in the medical literature there is a man described as having a belly that goes along with the size of a seven-month fetus. we know men can t physiologically get pregnant, but, yes, some men take the hormone thing to extremes. centuries ago this was considered normal biochemistry. in the 1900s in the united states it s been given a psychiatric moniker. i think for some guys it s the cohabitation 15 to 20 pounds and the anxiety and codependency. what s interesting in the research, al, is they say it continues for a while after the baby is born for a few months. i felt that where you feel a deeper connection to your wife. to me, she became even more impressive than she was already. you feel like you want to be there for the family. what s your takeaway for other fathers to be? my takeaway would be simply it s okay to be anxious. it turns out there is science. okay to put on 20 pounds. which i didn t lose after. which contradicts what you said that it goes away. no, no. she said the guys go away. i can t get the last ten pounds off. anxiety is part of it. it s totally unexpected. nobody s ready for kids. the gift here is that a woman doesn t go through pregnancy alone. it solidifies a relationship. once you have the baby you don t know how much you can love something until a child comes into the world. it alters everything. it s how you feel knowing your heart is beating outside your body for the first time. that s right. great stuff. thank you very much. are you going to stick around for the next half hour? [ female announcer ] maxwell house gives you a rich, full-flavored cup of coffee, so you can be good to the last drop. this morning on today s money, the secrets of the super savers. they put away 20% to 60% of their earnings. how do they do it? the answers may help us all save more and live better. we have money magazine s donna rizato. she interviewed dozens of supersavers and wrote about them. good to see you. you, too, annment. you basically compiled all the information and really it comes down to smart choices. that s right. a lot of people feel like the great recession changed people s money habits. we want to know if people are really saving more. we all know we should be but are people doing it? after interviewing dozens of people i found they are using smart strategies. they are not people living a deprived life. they are taking vacations, living a good life but are smart about saving money. you found similarities in what they were saying. among them, they set goals. that s right. sounds like a simple thing to do. set a goal and you are more likely to achieve it. the power of setting a goal is making it concrete. put a label on the goal and you are likely to achieve it. i interviewed financial researchers and they found if they put a child s name on the college tuition fund they doubled savings. put concrete labels on it and you will save more. don t have too many goals, but having several goals with specific names will help you reach them. wait before you buy. there must be a lot of waiting involved to set aside 60% of your income. delayed gratification is not the american way. we are spenders more than savers. i found a lot of our supersavers really were very they learned to curb impulse spending. one couple had a rule where they the husband and wife do not spend more than $30 without checking with each other first. that would stop things. that would slow things down. another simple thing anybody can do is use cash or a debit card than a credit card when buying something. when you pay immediately and you re not racking up interest costs. makes sense with a dress or outfit but what about everyday costs, the things you have to buy? i m not a fan of cutting auto the latte or not taking a vacation, but with the supersavers they were smart about how they spent money on everyday items. a lot of tools you can use. billshrink.com is one. if you have a cell phone or cable package it helps you figure out the best package for you. coupons.com. you can have coupons zapped directly to your store loyalty card. who wants to carry around coupons? you mention something that s hard to do and that s to live on just one salary. say you bring home money. choose one salary to live on and the other one, put it away. right. how can you do that? if you re lucky enough to live in a two-income household it s a good thing to practice for a while. most people i talked to who did it would bank one salary while they had the other one coming in to see if they could do it. most found they could easily do it. if you don t have two salaries, you could do some moonlighting and freelance on the side. one woman had a nice six-figure salary but liked to do writing and event planning. she would go to guru.com and find ways to earn money doing things she loved and she banked the savings. it s really about making part of your job saving money. you talk about keeping track of spending which makes sense. making saving automatic. this is about being purposeful about it. that s right. we re all human beings. it s not easy to save. but there are ways to make it simpler to do it. automate your savings. it overcomes our natural tendency to procrastinate. if you have money automatically taken out of the paycheck for your 401-k or bank account for savings you re more likely to save it because it won t hit your wallet. if you save it before it hits your wallet, you will never miss it. working on this article you started to save more money based on the tips? i thought i was a good saver but there is so much more i can do to save. one final tip that s terrific is just to pick one big ticket item in your life whether the house or car and live a little bit below your means. it samazing. if you take one or two big items that you can save a lot of money on you don t have to watch the small stuff as much. i learned a lot myself. donna s sharing the wealth with the rest of us. thank you very much. thank you. up next, the dos and don ts of high heels when it comes to style. wind myself up just to get out of bed. then.well, i have to keep winding myself up to deal with the sadness, the loss of interest, the trouble concentrating, the lack of energy. cooper square. i haven t been there yet. we re cooking in house beautiful s kitchen of the year. this thing is gorgeous on rockefeller center. got a skieylight. we can see the rain coming down. it s great. we re doing pasta three ways. we are starting with a simple pasta, especially this time of year. we have beautiful tomatoes that i have chopped up. the heirloom tomatoes are coming up now. they re fantastic. and we have buffalo mozzarella. this is simple. tear it up, a little bit of sea salt, extra virgin olive oil and a touch of salt. then i have this pasta cooking. very hot pasta. right. inside this cold salad, if you will, and just toss it together. that s it? that s it. that s the whole thing? that s one of them. so pour it right in that bowl. that s one down. one down. and then i have another pasta here which i sauteed onions and sausage. what s wrong with that? nothing wrong with that. i will add the penne i cooked. that s already cooked. could you precook it and keep it in the fridge? i don t often do that, but if i do, what i would do is cook it, lay it on a sheet tray just before it s cooked instead of rinsing it under water. that way all the starch is in there. so you can thicken it up. exactly. i have beautiful tomatoes. i have some beautiful spinach. we re just tossing that all together. i have another penne that i did as well which is that looks fantastic. over there with escarole, roasted mushrooms and toasted garlic. goat cheese as well. a bunch of good flavors. parsley. parsley. we re good to go. little crushed pepper? throw a little pepper in there. we ll grate some parmesan cheese over top of it. nothing wrong with that. there we go. this is a simple dish. they re all simple dishes. that s the thing. you know, simplicity for me is the ultimate elegance. you just push it together and boom. that s it. same thing. look at that. didn t take long. i m impressed. even i can do it. what s the big mistake people make when making pasta? a lot of times people overcook it. the cooking time is on the box. you can t mess it up. the other thing people do is they don t put all the flavor in it that they can. it s nice and simple. beautiful, straightforward, stuff. thank you very much, scott. we appreciate it. good luck. i will try to get down there. coming up on the next hour of today, we have the latest buzz on culture news and a makeover for your cruisewear. kathie lee is back, hoda is back. it s a big hour still ahead. don t go away. your local news and weather is coming up. 9:56 is your time now. 81 degrees. thick humidity out there in the nation s capital. tom will have your forecast after the news. i m eun yang. it is monday, july 19th, 2010. in the news today, parking in the district may be about to get a whole lot more confusing. the city is trying out new high-tech methods for paying for parking starting today. the new systems are in effect in parts of the district including friendship avenue and friendship heights. the pilot programs will be in place for about three months. tom s here with our forecast. no break from the heat anytime soon. it will be with us all week long, along with the humidity. and radar showing some showers now coming into culpepper county out of the west, arrange county, drifting off to the east. off to the west, another batch of showers coming out of the mountains into the central shenandoah valley. temperatures out ahead of that are climbing into the low 80s, 82 in washington. highs today, low 90s and the likelihood of passing afternoon thunderstorms that could dissipate by early this evening. with the new lane configuration, slow from army navy dry. that s the who s of it. and it looks like everyone s been cooperating with other commuters. very good news. 270, northbound and southbound, lanes are open. southbound germantown to the capital beltway, all cleared out for the morning commute. wake up with us extra early every day. news 4 today starts at 4:30 a.m. we hope you ll join us then for all your news, wea know the species, know the stain. lanolin-free coat, i know it s an alpaca. walks in here, looks says hey look, it s a llama! cleaning the stain like he would a llama stain. time he s wasting. call 1-800-steemer captions paid for by nbc-universal television from nbc news, this is today with kathie lee gifford and hoda kotb. live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. it s monday and fun day around here. we re so delighted you re with us again. and delighted you re back from your week off. how was it?
