also still ahead, a warning to driver, deadly danger deer pose on the roads. 16-year-old pop sensation justin bieber who was just named artist of the year at the american music awards will be here live, we have a big crowd outside. but less than begin with the black friday rush, nbc s rehema ellis is braving those crowds just a few blocks south of us at the manhattan mall. how is it looking there? reporter: it s crowded here, but it s not a frenzy and some people started lining up here at 10:00 thanksgiving night. the stores here at the manhattan mall, they opened around 4:00 this morning. people came rushing in looking for those bargains, looking for those door buster deals. i asked them why did you come so early? they said i m afraid if i don t get here early, i ll miss out on the big bargains. retailers are expting 138 million shoppers will be spending money this black friday shopping weekend and they say they s up something like 3% from last year so they re feeling optimistic and they re offering a lot of those bargains to try to lure those bargain hunting into the stores. rehema ellis, thanks so much. and brian dunn, the ceo of a bust buy is inside a best buy in minnesota. good morning to you. i believe your doors have been open since 5:00 a.m., are you happy withhe crowds you re seeing here now? i m very happy with the crowds we re seeing right now. it looks like the lines are longer this year than they were last year and so far, so good. how much weight does best buy butt on this day? we talk about it every year, and it seems like black friday started even earlier this year than in years past. we have had a number of events during the course of the month to stimulate the customers. last friday is a really important event for us because it s the gateway to the holiday selling season. i think people have becom very savvy to block friday shopping, they have been expecting those deals, they have been scouring the newspapers and internet. what is it you re doing to accommodate those savvy shoppers who are looking for real bargains? i think those savvy shoppers are best buy s friend. we re out early with our ad, we re in social media with our ad. we really endeavor to talk to our customers where they are, whether that s through an insert, through an aggressive television campaign this year, or an area such social media. earlier this month, consumer reports came out with their best black friday deals a at least five of those deals mentioned best buy as the retailer. but we mentioned how savvy shoppers are this year, and you have to keep your prices low. how difficult i that inhis economy? i don tnow how difficult it is. it part of our nature. it sets best buy above and it gets amplified on black friday, but it is a place that we place an awful lotf emphasis making sure that we re market right for our customers. and we know that electronics are of the every year, wanting to get those e-book readers, camcord camcorders, tvs and those people who are sitting at home w didn t brave the crowds this friday, is it too late to get a deal? are those earlyird specials ne? an awful lot of them are going fast. i obviously encourage everybody to get off the couch and come in and see us. thanks so much, enjoy black friday. it is now 7:06, and here s carl. three teenaged boys set sail on the south pacific on october 5, they never made it back to shore, their families asuled the boys were dead, but incredibly they have now been found alive 50 days after their ordeal began. one of the rescuers shared the remarkable details with us. we could see that it was a small speedboat and that it had three individuals inside it. once we are in calling distance, i did ask them if they needed help, and one of the boys relied yes, and in the same sentence, he said we have been adrift for two months. once hearing that, i immediately got my crew active into launching the rescue boats. it was just amassing to he them in that state as they came on the bode. ey were as you can seeing their physical being was very heart breaking and it was just incredible to see how they were still okay. they only had a few coconuts for e first few days. and they more or less sustained themselves on this fresh rain water and they did manage to catch a bird, a sea bird about two weeksefore we did rescue them which probably did give them enough nutrition to carry them for those next couple of weeks but they were just skin and bones, their skins was just falling off their bones, but their spirit, their mentality was just overwhelming. they were smiling, as we extracted them from the boat. i believe it was just a real miracle that we did come across this boat while we were traveling in a remote area in the south pacific. they were spirit was just so high, they were incredible. and i just couldn t believe they had this will power still after so long. the boys are in great spirits, they re currently receiving medical atttion at a local hospital. they have already staed to put on some weight. almost out of the movie cast away. i m already seeing a made for tv movie. what an amazing story. and to be discovered on thanksgiving. they got a lot to be thankful for. a checkf the morning s other top stories, thomas roberts is in for ann at the news desk. we begin in south korea where the sound of artillery fire was heard earlier this week. richard, did pyongyang receive any new direct hits overnight? reporter: no direct hits, no hits near the islands we re told by officials. people on this island that was attacked on tuesday, heard explosion, they thought it was yet another attack by north korea. it turns out that it wasn t, that it was explosions within noh korea proper. it was apparently a message by north korea however to the united states to south korea that it is not letting its guard down and that the situation remains tse and that the north koreans remain on guard. and as we have been covering, the uss between the u.s. and south korea? north korea says that these exercises are reckless and that they bring the region to the brink of war. it is also threateni to respond aggressively against north rea if any of these warships, u.s. warships, south korean warshs enter any north korean territory. the u.s. however is going forward with these joint exercises, the u.s. government and south korea believe that these exeises are important to show solidarit and to show north korea that it will not severe any more provocation, any more attacks from the north to the south. richard engel in south korea. the number of cholera cases expected to grip haiti has been doubled. the u.n. now projects that 425,000 will contract the disease by spring. meanwhile the death toll has skyrocketed to more than 1,500. dramatic images coming from rio dayanei neeeiro where polica tanks went through. france will reunch a search. the victim s families have pressured the government to find the wreckage and determine the cause of the crash thatalled all 228 people on board. russia is now dismantling one of the darkest legacies of the cold war. the former soviet union has created a new facility to destroy it s massive stockpile ofhemical weapons in anticipation of a 2012 deline. russia has the largest collection of weapons of mass destruction. on a much different note, this is not george, but a man of irish desent. the irish setter was declared best in show on thursday. at just 3 years old, cleooney i quite young to win such a prestigious award. al is off this morning, so the weather channel s stephanie abrams is here with a look at scattered showers around our region on this friday morning. good morning. i m tom kierein. right now we re getting rain across the norern district, maryland, and the western district and we ll have passing showers through the nexteveral hours. right now in the. 40s farther to the west. cold air will be arriving late he tonight. maybe sunshine will break out after the rain this afternoon. a blustery and cold day saturday. sunny and cold sunday. and for your sunday night football forecast, hers how it s looking, it s going to be on the cold side, so you re going to have to bundle up, or maybe youolunteer to cook, that s how you stay warm when it s cold out. here are the temperatures, right around 40 degrees with partly cloudy skies. now to politics, the woman who became a face of americans struggling in this difficult economy. lma hart made headlines when she told president obama she w tired of defending him and was worried about her future. velma hart recently lost her job. we re going toalk to her in a moment. but here s cnbc s washington correspondent. velma hart burst into the nation s consciousness by telling president obama directly her frustrations about the economy. now we know that she was under more pressure then than any of us knew. this was the life that velma hart told president obama about this fall. i m one of your middle class amicans and quite frankly, i m exhausted. i m exhausted of defending you, defending your administration, defending the mantle of change they voted for. reporter: hart became the face of the president s problem. the gap between the promise of his campaign and the reality of his presidency. the self-described finance geek was even described as a cnbc contributor. but she wasn t just exhausted, privatelyhe was scared. but you had a secret? when i was talking to the president on september 20, i was thinking about that. but if you look at our cash position, it wasn t very good they called me in on a friday afternoon and said they had made a decision. reporter: she still supports president obama and worries he has been hurt by midterm elections, but now she has more immediate concerns. could it take me two years to find a job? that s a scary proposition for my family. now as a finance professional, velma hart bases her optimism on things getting better for her personally and fro fegsly. as john said in his piece, you have been the chief financial officer of this nonprofit for a while, you know the economy is bad, but m wondering when you re called into that office and you re told that your job is being cut, are you prepared to hear anythg like that. i don t think anyone s ever prepared to hear anything like that. certainly in this economy you don t want to be out job searching. but i truly was blessed in that i have been such a help to many in my circle over the last couple of years who have lost jobs, i think in many respects, they help to strengthen my resolve and at least appreciation for what h to be done and i m grateful for that. i consider myself immensely blessed, i have told people that hundreds of time. you have two daughters in private school, one s about to go into college. you seem relatively optimistic, but i m wondering if privately you if you are scared. as john said in the piece and in a number of interviews have had so far, of course i m scared. i don t think anybody can be in this situation and not be a little uncomfortable. but i m a personal of faith and i believe that things happen for a reason. i believe in the old adage when one door closes, anoth o window and i m waiting for my window of opportunity. if you had a chance to pose another question to him now, what would you ask? i think i have gotten a little bit shell shocked of having public questions. i do have questions and i would be glad to ask them i i every had the opportunity. i think there are a number. are you still supportive of the presiden my condition isn t directly attributed to any individual. i supported the president before, i support him now. you have become a symbol of people who are frustrated with the white house. tt s actually a great question. i don t think anyone can prepare for this type of attention, especially when you think you re regular, you re just like everybody else. what i think i have decided to do is seize the opportunity to speak for people who don t ordinarily get an opportunity to speak. you know, i get messages and e-mails and evenalls from people all over the country and these last couple of days have been just wonderful and i just want to interrupt for a second and say thank you to all of you who are trying to support me, lift me up, keep me encouraged, i appreciate it. i m passing that on to people i know who are also affecte by unemployment because i think at s very important. but i m also trying in my small way, my small opportunity here to pass on a message that affects everyone, all businesses are being affected. my community which i love is being affected. we re allust trying to struggle through this in the hopes that our leaders will make good decisions going forward. and i m excited about what s going to happen in january and i ho people will get serious about leading this country? have any of those calls led to any job opportunities for you? people are supporting me, ironically, the thanksgiving holiday, i haven t had much time to act on those things, but i do plan to call people back and if nothing else, thank them for even considering me. so i m hoping something good will happen, i m keeping my prayers up and my prayer circle active and we re continuing to do what we do. i m doing what everybody else in this country who s become unemployed, i m pling my boot straps up and i m going to go out and find a job because that s what we do. we rin the here and now, and we re not in some of the tater that s going on in our politics right now. velma, we wish you the best. it is 7:19. if you re driving home after thanksgiving, be careful, this is matg season f deer and that s making the roads incredibly dangerous. reporter: you know, the trouble is that bucks get tunnel vision after chasing after doe and the morning and evening rush hours, that s when the deer are most active. a warning here, some of our video might be a bit disturbing. from a dashboard camera mounted on a west virginia taxi, vid of an all too close encounter with a deer. ws that? reporter: with deer mating season now peaking, november is the peak month for deer accidents and nowhere more personathan iminnesa recently. it brokey sus cavity, it broke any emy eyes, both socket my eyes are broken reporter: the blake family was on their way to a pizza restaurant when an oncoming car hit a deer sending it through the windshield of their car. . i said deer, and about that time, it was like a scene from twister, with the cow, only it was the deer and a split second later there it was. afterhe today deer, i just kind of blocked out. deer collisions are up over 21% over five years, with state farm estimating over 2 million. in montgomy county, maryland just outside of d.c., they pick up 15 to 30 dead deer every day. the numbers are aggering. because now they re everywhere. theically in areas that you don t expect to see deer. eachne of these red dots represen a deer traffic accident. and in our county alone, we have close to 2,000 accidents a year. reporter: 2,000 jus in this county? yes. reporter: rob gibbs is in charge of the county s deer management program. if you see one, there s more than likely going to be more there. they travel in herds. a very close call for the black family. we just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. reporter: well chris blake had 20 thundershowehours of sur repair all of the damage in his face. and you saw oliia there, she played the lead in hello dolly even with a broken nose. still to come, there were eyewitnesses and a confession. so why has a trial date not been set for the man who allegedly gunned down four relives including his 6-year-old niece last thanksgiving. we ll have the latt but first this is today on nbc. plus he s one of the biggest names in music, he s just 16 years old. we re going to catch up with justin bieber when he ops by. let s begin with some serious news. four members of a florida family brutally murdered last thanksgiving, 12 months later, what appeared to be an open and shut ce has now turned into a painful wait for justice. here s nbc s kerry sanders. reporter: thanksgiving a year ago. what s going on there, ma am? my neighbor s oh, i m so nervous. my neighbors next door, somebody has a gun. reporter: among the four people just executed, his 6-year-old daughter michaela. and in the background, you can hear murriel, michaela s mother. my daughter was murder, my mom was murded. my two cousins were murdered. reporter: today murriel and her husband jim say they re baffled by the legal syste a six-week nationwide manhunt led police to paul merit in a hideout in the flori keys. i can t believe i have done all this. reporter: and later again in a recorded jailhouse phone call, he confessed. but even with the confession and eyewitnesses, marriage has entered a n guilty plea, a trial date is still not set. it s ridiculous in a case like this that s s open and shut evidence wise that it takes years. reporter: marriage had been a last-minute added guest to the family s thanksgiving dinner, inexplicably after they shared the meal, marriage pulled out a gun and gan shooting. michaela had just gone to bed. was she asle? or would you like to believe that she was asleep? she wasn t asleep. i heard her gasp. i heard her and then pow, pow. today her bedroom is as it was. their only daughter with all her energy and tenderness, replaced by a haunting celebritie ining . used to all of my nightmares were when i was asleep. now they re all after i wake up. reporter: in the home where the calendar remains unturned and michaela s clothes still hang in the closet. michaela s short life is now touching others. may i please make a bear castle? a bear castle? what are you talking about? reporter: murriel routinely rerded her daughter and on those audiotapes,n impromptu story of a bear who found a icorn. there s a unicorn right there. reporter: that story, the bear s cast system now a book, illustrated by a woman who lost her own dauger. people say oh, you ll get over it with ti, you don t get over it, you learn how to cer it. reporter: but what the book has done is give murriel and jim a way to share their daughter, the mey it earned helps disadvantaged children to participate in what michaela so enjoyed, dachbs and munce and m classes. to think that children are enjoying something that was so precious to her, tohare a story, and we know that that s michaela s heart. for today, kerry sanders, nbc news, jupiter, florida. and dan abrams is our legal correspondent. for the victims who are still alive who were there that day, you can understand their story, we have eyewitnesses, we have a confession. the fact that no trial date has been set at this point, a little usual. but in death penalty cas, things take longer. the bottom line is you need to have the right defense attorney who knows how to handle a death penalty case, you need to have a judge who s handled death penalty cases, that s one of the issues here. so any time a death is on the table, basically the system implements additional checks that says we want to make sure that this was done right. if they were just pursuing the possibility of life in prison, i think this case woulde moving forward very quickly. that s not to justify, that s just to explain why it is where we are. and in this case, public defenders are expected to put up an insanity defense. does that also further complicate things? i think it further delays it. the family is right, in seeing that comparative this is an open and shut case, when you talk about all the evidence we discussed. but the problem is, when the question is who did it, a confession tends to be open and shut, yes, i did it, but he s my exanation. in going through the process of interviewing the defendant, interviewing the people who knew h him, it can be a very, very time consuming process and a very frustrating one. but remember, he s behind bars right now. is is not someone who s walking free pending trial. he s behind bars, he s not going anywhere. there are other cases we he seen sometimes when victims family members are extremely frustrated because someone s out pendin appeal, et cetera. given the facthat we believe an insanity defense may be put forth, if you see wha paul michael marriage did before this shooting, he bought a gun, he bought a cover to hide his car, i would think that make an insanity defense extremely difficult. when you listen to the words he s using in talking to family members, he s now saying he can t understand what he did. that is really is beginnings of an insanity defense. basically saying i couldn t have understood what i was doing, i couldn t have undstand right from wrong and i coun t have understood what led up to it. you re right, that makes it even harder, that you didn t understand that what you did was wrong, buying guns, et cetera thatakes the already difficult insanity defense almost that much more difficult. how much longer can we expect a process like this to take before trial date i set? there s no firm amount of time and that s what s incredible frustrating for the family members. i would expect that in the months to come, they would set a trial date. apparently the problem in this case is finding the right judge. the judges need special training to hear these kind of cases? some stores are offering extra discounts for using their cards. you get an extra 5% off with an already great deal. and if you get opportunities to sign up for new car for discounts, it might be worth that too. just as long as you pay off your balance. there s a lot for sale in the world and a lotf it isoing on discount this season, right? for that we turn to the stotto family, l.j., anthony and elena. guysood morning to you. good morning. everybody was excited when we heard you were in the house. thank you. we re doing the leftovers. leftovers. a you know, on thanksging, i do my famous stuffing which is rice and sausage and cheeses and today with the stuffing, we re doing riceakes. oh, that looks good. so l.j., my grandson, do you want to say how to do this? we start off by taking our stuffing, forming it into a ball like shape to put it inur flour, put flour on both sides to keep the shape together, we then dip it in our egg yoke and put it in our bread kruch bread you just want to saute it until its golden brown. it s oozy and creamy and very easy and here, we use the rest of our sweet potatoes and we got some apples that were on the table. and we cut them up, a little cinnamon, a little butter and we baked them together. ando it s sweet potatoes and a apples. how much butter. oh, don torry about it. it s the holidays. you re going to end up using turkey and gravy? you re opening the refrigerator this morning and is there so what are you going to do with it? you need to get the meat off the rcass so you can work with it. a little bit of olive oil and butter. very little butt. we ll saute that for just one second. we re going to add the gravy that we had from last night. and the day after, you re kind of tired, you don t want to work too hard. and use everything you have. just a touch of cream. a little liquid on the cheese. parmesan cheese. we re going to put this in the oven, a little bit of pasta. we re going to mix that all together. cook it about ten or 15 minutes. this could be lunch or dinner the next day. there s your lunch day, right now, make it. and then of course there s dessert, right. save room for dessert. we re making pumpkin bread pudding. i ha here i have brown sugar, some more vanilla, cinnamon, eggs and if you would just put that pumpkin puree, we re going to mix it all together. this is a very simple recipe, it allows you to use all of your leftovers from thanksgiving and it s great on a chilly autumn night. that panatone that you received as a gift,on t regift it. use it here. we toast it in the oven and we put it in a buttered deish and we re going to cover it with our pumpkin puree and we re going to mix it all together and then we bake it in the oven for about 40 minutes, we top itff with o cranberry sauce. some walnuts. walnuts, pecans, whatever you have left over, here some cranberry sauce we can finish it with. we have some extra time, john wasn t here. how much time do you have? and is there any legal action you can take? even in light of the recent cases of tragic bullying at we have seen, there s still a belief by a lot of people that this is just a part of growing up, this is just something that kids have to deal with, but bullying can actually be criminal? first people need to remember that because sometng happens on school grounds doesn t mean it i not a crime. a school is not a safe zone when it comes to potential criminal or even civil action. so remember that actions that are taken on school grounds should be thought of and treated the same way as if it didn t happen on a school. so if you re talking face to face bullying, when does it become criminal? threats of violence, extortion, harassment, stalking, child pornography, et cetera. these are all things that people associate with bullying and yet sometimes they forget that it s also potentially crimil. and i said that face to face traditional bullying because these days we re hearing an awful lot of cyber bullying. let s say yo child gets a text message that says you re a loser. what rights do you have in that situation? when it s something like you re a loser, probably not much. but you re a loser comes nine, ten, 12, 15 times a day on facebook, on e-mail, on twitter et cetera, then it can become harassment. so there is a line to cross between simply saying i don t like you, versus i m now harassing you with my belief that i don t like you. soet s say your child comes home complaining about being bullied at school and that type of bullying you believe is criminal, what should you the do as a parent? i think is important that the parents almost treat their child like a client, meaning the parents become the lawyers in effect and they now meet with their client to discuss what should we do? let s discuss this together? should we go to the authorities? should we go to school officials? because again and again kids aren t going to wt to do much. they re probably afraid it s going to lead to more bullying. parents have to say, look, i want to advise you to say that i think you might want to move forward he, but the parents have to be very cognizant there s going to be reluctance on the part of the kid. but the parents sometime have to be effective and they have to convince their client that s effective. there was a previous effort at federalegislation which got stuck in committee. there s another effort now in federal legislation, particularly with regard to what colleges can or can t do. we re seeing for example in new jersey now a new effort there, which would individual states are taking action?
