the king s speech andthe cial network ? we ll find out today, tuesd, january 25, 2011. captions paid for by nbuniversal televion and welcome to today on this tuesday morning. m meredith vieira. i m matt lauer. thpresident called for more civility in washington so i think we llee the message put to the test tonight as he addressembers of congre and the rest of us in the nation. some democrats and republics will sit together instd ofcross the aisle but will this signal a new tone in washingtonnd will it last? also ahead, andmission of guilt from the woman accused of kidnapping aaby from a new york hospital 23 yrs ago. we ll tell you what she had to say as she faced her victim s familyn court. plus, she is back. the mom who opened up in a new book about raising successful children in a strict and limitingmanner. she calls ithe chinese way. last time she was he she sparked firestorm with viewers. she ll respond toer crics and we fin out what her kids have to say about h they were raised. we start with what preside obama is expected to say during the state of t union address. savannah guthrie has details. good morning. reporter:ood morning, matt the president was up last night still tweing the speech. he m practice today. the speech will focus on jobs, keeping ameca competitive and ll include a reach-out to republicans. aids hope it will hp cement the president s rise in the polls. madam eaker, the president of the united states eporter: with the president t to address congress tonight, on monday his spokesman d enough to avoid giving too much away. i am not at noon on monday going to give a lot about what theresident is going to say at 9:00 on tuesday. will there be specifics on social security? i was going to print up a slide to say the state of th unn is at 9:00 p.m. on tuesday. in termof cuts will we hear much? i realize the exercise in futility on both endshere. eporter: when t president takes the podium it will mark the mpoint of the presidency. o union is strong. reporter: in many ways the beginning of his 2012 re-electn campaign. no accident he gave a sneak preview to online campaign supporters. we still ve a lot more work to do. reporter: s an opportunity to reset with voters. ten weeks ago he wasn t going to make the playof. now he s in the super wl. eels bad. reporter: after getting shellacked by voters in the midterms the preside promised a mid-course correction. he cut a dl over xes, and turned to siness-friendly executives to fill high profile posions. he led the nation in mourning over the shoing in tucson. his approval rating is now up 8 points at 53% and in indepeents his approval jumped 11 points. but white house aid deny the present made a political shift for tactical purposes. h the president moved ideologically to the center? the psident is still the same president we have had f more than tw years. reporter: things may be different on capitol hill where republicans on monday moved forward with the plans to dramatically slash ending. we must return to ebailout, prebinge spendg levels for funding the federal government. repter: well, tonight at the state of the union whe congresswon gabrielle gifrds would have been sitting tre will be an empty chair. some wilwear bla and white ribbons to honor her. daniel hernandez, thentern who helped safe her will be in the audience. one other note, carol browner head of the energy and climate office at the whi house is leaving her position and is likely t be eliminad all together when she leaves. we could see rash of personnel changes late this week including a new press cretary. back to you. savannah, thank you ve much. valerie jarrett is a senior adviser to m obam thanks foroining us. thank you, matt. good morning. let s talk about what s bei call the president move to thecenter. here shat mitch mcconnell said over the weekend. i m happy the presint is pivoting, slooet let s see if he s willing to do it and if h is i think he ll find a l of help among republicans in congress. is this abo a pivot, move to the center is it a reaction to the last election or in preparaon for the next elecon? none of the above, matt. whathe president is focused on every day since he was elected is what are we going to doo grow our economy, create jobs in america. he had to make very tou decisions and now we ve seen the economy coming back. we re seein private sector job growth, over a million this ye. the stock market is up so people s retiremt funds are increasing. as we ok to the futurwe are really focused on winning for america. at s going to b the focus of the speech. what we can do togeer. one of the things he s doing is reaching out to big business, pointing two big business leaders to key posts. is there a risk-reward in that? does he risk alienating liberal voters by doing that? no. i think what he s doing is recognizing that the long-term sustainable growth and job creation of our country rests with the private sector. so who better than creating job in america, who s exporting good created in america all overhe world and bringing goods back to america to strengthen the ecomy, who better to advise the president? he has advisor from small, medium large, all kinds of bunesses, matt. i don t think we should jump to conclusions becaus of one really important appointmt. let me ask you about defic and spending. is the president tonightoing to do what some demrats criticized rublicans for not doing over the past year or so? will he get scific about where he will make cuts in spending? will he embrace some othe toug recommendations from the deficit duction commission u know, cutti things like social security, medare and fense? tonight s budget speech really will lay out a framework for the future. in the next few weeks he ll release his budget whic will be specific. on social security the president has said he wts to kp social security strong. he doesn t believe in privatizing social security, letting it go up and down with the marketplace. on that specific point he wl be very clear, but the budget will come out in three wes. it will be ecific. at the end of tonight s speech, i think every american will understand the preside is absolutely committed to getting our fiscal housen order, bringing down the defici quickly, if you will, in the wake of e tragic shootings i cson, there have been calls for tougher gun laws in thi country. the mayor of new york city called on the president to use is opportunity t get tough on gun laws and to cnge the way background check are done for gun purchasers. will the president directly dress gun control i tonight s speech? i m not going to eview what he s going to say specifically, but we have an empty seat in e chamb. congresswoman gfords has a long way to go. it is a reminder of how we have to work to bring down crime, to build an environment of civility ere we can disagree witho leading toiolence and the president clearlyas always stated thate supports the assault weapons ban. i don t want to get too much into the dails of tonight, but certainly an empty seat in the house is a remder for everne, not just this evening but around the country. ms. jarrett thanks for your time this morning. you re welcome, matt. you can wch live coverage of president obama s state of the union tonight at 9:00 eastern/6:00 pacific time her on nbc. it nine minutes aer the hour. here s medith. hank u. security has been tightenedt russn airports following monday s r error attack that killed 35 people at moscow s busiest rport. stephanie gosk is there with th latest. good morning to you. reporte good morning, meredith. the attack took place over my shoulder. there is an increase in security here and at other airpos ound the country. this morning dmitry medvedev was blaming airport security for lapses in security. today ruian news agencies are reporting thathe special services here had specific informion about an upcoming attack includi the names of three people they suspected were involved. they cldn t find those people and ultimately couldn stop the attack. authorities sayhe suicideomb was desigd to be as deadly as possible, killedith ball bearings and screws that rped through e international arrivals hall moscow s main airport. amateur video appears to catch the moment of theblast. some eyewitnesses say they saw e bomber i just raised my head and here came the ast. there we many ces and somebody made a shout, starting with the snd ah followe by the explosio i saw the suitcase. the suitcase was on fire repter: inside a cloud of thicsmoke, chaos and victim their baggage and blood strewn across the airport floor. teible. something i wish iad never seen. i mery shocd. reporter: dozens we kille and more than 160 wounded. many removed on luggage carts. russian president dmitry medvedev blamed terrorists, vong to findnd punish tse behind it. u.s. officials condemned the attack. we stand with theeople of russia in this ment of sorrow and grief. reporter: so farhere has been no claim ofesponsibility but the city has been attacked before by islamic insurgents from the troubled caucus region. what we know is it involved shrapnel, it was a suicidebomb. that s karcharacteristic for attacks fr the caucuses. rorter: last march two female suicide bbers killed 40. in 2009 a bomb exploded on a couter train and domodedov haan targeted before as well. the rebel leader of the islamic movent warned that war was coming to russian streets. at the airport monday, war is what it looked ke. 20 minutes after the explosion this airport was up and running, bumany russians are concerned that this has already had negativeffect on the international community onheir reputation. it s a big concern because in 2014 they are hope hosting the winter olympics just north of the troubled ccuses region. thank you very much. roger cressy is a terrorism analyst for nbc news. good morning. good morning. no one has claimed sponsibility for the bombing but as we pointed out it has characteriics of an attack emanating from the causes region of russia. can we draw conclusions about the bomber or bombers involved here? what interesting is in prior attacks they went after transportion targets and the aiort was a transportation target, too. but they went ter the inrnational arrivals terminal. the objective was to kill not just russians but foreigners. if this was a chechnyan attack th are looking to embarrass putin and dmitry dvedev and alsorying to call int question russia s ability to secure its citizen are they trying to evoke internationa pressure on russia? tt certainly could be an objective here. for years they have tried to argue that t international community isn t doing enough to deal with their ight, their cause and for years they have trd to separate from russia. but the government of russia sees it as domestic sovereignty and won t do outreacho the internationacommunity. if that she objective of this attack i will fall short. there are repor that there were two bombers, oneale and one female. hat s interesting now is we are seeing reportsf finger-pointingoing on. that the was a credible specific threat, local securities, domestic security services were going aft it but they didn t notify rport thorities to put up aitional security measures. there were no mal detectors put up. it looks like it s a casef a lack of information-sharing. so the investigation on this one will be interestin oesn t it strike yous odd that security wasn t beefed up given that the had this intelligence a week ago? exactly. any timehe domestic security service is chasing a potential terror plot theres an assution they will work with local charts, police a security officials in any of the potential transportation targets. clrly someone dropped the ball on this and we have seen tragedy fold. in the guardian they quoted a security source as saying quote, agents were sking three suects but they managed to access the territo of the airport, witness the explosion which theirccomplice carried out d then leave the airport. have you heard about tho ditional suspects? what s important here is even with aingle suide bomber it is unlikely that individual acted by themselves. in the past additional individuals have supported the attacker. one, there is credible information and the russians failed to find the individuals d second, it speaks to the network that if its the chechans behindt they can operate within scow. two major attacks in less than 12 months is a proem for the dmitry medvedev government. it s 7:15. here s matt. now to ccago and a state court of appeals decision to remove former white hou chief of staff rahm emanuel from the ballot for mayor. john yang is there with the latest. good morning to you. reporter: good morning, matt. chicag politics, it seems that litt is simple and straightfoard. and this morning the candidate who once seemed theavorite is f the ballot. anything in the news you guys want to talk about? are you here for my economic plan? reporter: he wishes. after a potentiallyatal blow for the campaign to become chicago mayor, rahm anuel trying to take it in stride. as my fathersed to say, nothing is ever easy in life. this is just one turn in t road. reporter: just hours before, a 2- state court ruling order him off the ballot saying he dn t meet the illois requirement that he reside in chicago for the yr preding the election. he said he rented out the hse and mov his family to washington in 2009 when he came president obama s chi of staffe remained a resident. itill own a home here. i look forward to moving into it one da i vote from here, pay property taxes here. reporter: his attorneys asked the supreme court to stay the ruling while they appeal. do you believe the people of chicago desee to dece who should be eir next mayor? rorter: printers were ordered to start producing ballots without his me. early voting begins january 31. we have to printallots now. eporter: his candidacy attrted the big guns lik bill clinton and comedian andy sandberg who ptrays him on saturday night live. everyone in washington is trying to kill youll the time. reporter: he s gotten big poll numbers, a 2-1 lead over theecond place candidate and an even bigger fund-raising edge. nearly five times more than the closest competitor. rm emanuel came back to chicago with an air of inevitability and a huge war chest. this ruling ves people back in the pack a new leasen life. repter: his attorneys will file the appeal with thetate supreme court toy. the firsthallenge isust to get the justices to agree to hear the case in theirst plac matt? you have gone to the extreme whether it s tongue in cheek or not. of the biggest differences i see between western and chinese renting is chinese parents assume strength rather than fragility. reporter: sophia defended h mom in the new york post writing, i think strict parenting forced me to be more indepeent. readers responded. the book shot to numbefive on the new york times best seller list. now on her book tour chua highlights the end of the story where a public blowout with lulu caused the author to rethink some ways. shut up, she said to me. shsaid, you don t love me. reporter: the two have reconciled and chua allowed lulu to pursue some of her own interests. both young women insist they are satisfied th their mom s parenting style. if i changed anything i wouldn t be who i was. reading the book i was surpsed. i was like, wow, these kids soun like they had a miserable childhood, but ihink we had a lot of fun. amy, good moing to you. good morning. thanks f having me. n at all. it s been a crazyouple of weeblgs for yo it feels le a hundred years. talk to me about what the reaction haseen like. there have been a lot of negative comments about the book but also positive ones. that s what s been most surprising to me. i have had so many e-mails from people who say, hey, i m not chinese, i m not an immigrant, but we share your values. i from idaho. my family belves deeply in the value of sustainedard work a the pride and j of doing something extremely well. i had this oneute youngan who wrotee and said, tiger moms comen all races and varieties. my mom was a single mom who workedwo jobs and she got home really late everyvening exhausd. even though sheas exhausted she always checked my homework, looked at tests. a minus wasn t good enough for r. she never let melack off. now i m at a really good college. i dn t write the book for that purpose but i feel a lot of americans it s a coersation that st of was waiting to happen. as i said in the beginnin there are lots ofeople who were crical of what you had to say. so many that your oldest daughter sophia felt compelled to write to the new york post. she wre, one problem i people don t get your humor. in fac you have said much of the bo is young in cheek, making fun of myself. are there parts of theook that have been misunderstood by folks or misinterpreted? this is the funniest thing. it sbout 50% othe people maybe 70%. but there areeople who say, oh, my gosh, i w rling on the floor. this was so funny. i reading the lines aloud. other people areaking it straight saying, this is horrible. it s a prett dry t. also, if you know me but a lot of people don t. where is it wit, amy? where are you speaking truthful? it s trhful all the way through but it ooh es like a self-parod i put a lot of things in my daughters mouths. when i say i m going t be applying my strict chinese parenting t my two big dop dopey somalia dogs that s like lucille ball burlesque, b the whole book is true some of it is for dramatic fect. it s weird bause hen you say ialled my daughter garbage or said i would burn her stuffed animals. that s from m daughter. but, ye, i want to say, meredith, that s gotten ou of control. i called my father used that word garbage with me oe and only once in my entire childhood. itas when i had something that mighbe common in more permissive families. i had a fitt 15. i told my mom, shut up, i hate you. ike lulu said to you. ut i have to tell you the way i was raised, you honor your parents. it didn t take me down at all. was saying, shame on you. that s how took it. he said, if you talk to you mother like that afterhat she s done to you, you are worth nothing. that w the chinese word for garbage. i used it once and only once. sophia s entire life. that s theay i believe she took it, too. those are all ue. you know, part of it s me now looking back so when i said only theiano and viol, that s likee putting myself back 18 years ago when i was overconfidt parent with a very easy first kid and i w kind of trying to do what my parents did. thatist was applied strictly to , i have to tell you. your second daughter which was the one that caused allhe trouble. your first was compliant. it waslulu. from t beginning. kicking and she said she would raise her own children much the same way exce she would allow them to have more social interaction with other kids. is that a regretou have? it is a regret. you know, i have loosened up in the last year and half. i have to te you, it s not like i think, oh, this is so eatnow. now they have more time on facebook. i m ambivalent. bui have loosened up socially. they both said that we have a viewer question from todaysw.com. when they are older, how do you think your children will remeer their child differential diagnoschildhood? i think this is why there is so much criticism. are all anous. i m anxious. my daughters and were really close. again, welown around a lot. so i hope, i pray that s the only thing that matters to me my relationship to them. so far the signs look good. i adore my own parents b i don t know. that she thing. one of the reasons it struck a chord with people, emotion chord is we are looking at statistics forids in this countryersus the world in reading, mathnd science. we rank 17th. students in shanghai, above everybody else, numberone. whatan parents learn in this cultur about raising children? you know, i think that this is actually maybe a good timing. you know, chi actually they are trying to lrn from the west because they have very much this emphas on sict discipline, focused drillingnd memorization, but ty are now the entire country is trying to revamp the education system to bring in more creavity and exploratio so we should try to learn, too. maybe we have gone too far. think it s great tt we have the emphasis on choice, freedom. i love it. that s what make this is country great. maybe we can, y know, lrn something little harder on early child i don t know if drilling is the right word, but hard work building the basic skillsarly on. no being afraid thkids will crack if we are a little hard them. it s finding balance. as long as we don t coromise their self-esteem. yeah. thank you for bng here. the book is called battle hymn ofhe tiger mother. still to com we head to beverly hills r the oscar nominations. first these messages. hey, youade yourwn lunch. yep! look in your bag, made you something. when i used it it was more like the west wing. that s wha i felt. instead of president bartlett it president o. people are talking about the bo now not because of what s itten in the bk for the mos part. they are talking about the marketing of the book with this anonymous author and saying, here we g again. good book or good marketing scheme? i hope it s both. personally think it s an entertning, suspenseful book. ere were good reasons f the author to be anonymous. there is a long tradition of anonymously writt political novels. whe you say there are good reasons, whacan you tell m about the author? the author is somebody who has long experiencen politics who has hadccasion to observe barack obama in situations not open to the public. so inhe same room as barack obama. eah. okay. did the author want to remain anonymous orid simon and schust go to the author and say, we have a good idea, why don t you rain anonymous? it was mutually agreed upon. it was an ia we had at about the same time. there is a lot of creative freedom in being anonymous. you ca say a lot and put it all out there if you don t have t worry about your name being on it. when wring a political novel isn tt important for the reader to have perspective, t kn whether the pson who wrote the book is a republican or a democrat? doesn t that add context to the book? that s it. the book has become so partisan we didn t want peoe to know whether the author was liberal or conservative. we wanted people to make up their own minds aut the book. we thought it would be more fun. let me play 20 questio with you. is it a man? well, i m willing to rule out a couple of people, okay? okay. meryl streep didn t write it. od. snooki didn t write it. is it man? well, there is a 50% chance. is it a person who is either right now or previously was in the obama inner circle? well, you know, some people suggested that president obama himself wre the book. it seemed far fetch -fetch. wh are the chances? i would love if somebody asd him at a news conference. you didt answerhe question. was this pern or is this person now a mber of the obama inner circle i would say the answer to that is probly not. is this person a member of themedia? is this person a member of the media? i don t want to go that far. some people have suggested that it s stephen colbt. rig. i think stephenolbert is probably too busy. let me ask about an interesting post online fm the american tnker website. speculate that is the author of the book is a novelist named james uno, a former journalist and state department official who left gernment service a few years ago to write books full time. e character fm one of his novels a presidential aidamed waer lafontaine is the name of a major character in the book. is it james bruno? there is a better chance of it being snooki. will you rule him out? i guess i ve. it s not james bruno. you sent an e-mail, quote and chuck todd g one. you may be asked to comment whether or not you arehe author. if sot would be gre if you refrained from commenng. you want journalists to play along? i was having a little bit of fun. it was like tom saer telling his friends not to pnt the fence. mostly i was trying to protect the author. is there a deal to reveal the name of the author at some point, a la joe cline? no. so we may never know who wrote the book? you know, riters have distinctive voices. i wouldn t be surprised if somebody figured it out, but we ve not going to talk. all right. jonathancarp, the plot thickens. thank u very much. thank you. 8:26 is your time now, 31 deees. much warmer than yesterday and some wintryix headed our way. towill have yourorecast right after thenews. good morning, i m eun yang. a boil water notice is in fect for 400,000 water customers after this massi water main break in prince george s county. the 54-inch main burst, sending 50 millionallons of water gushing and leaving aath of destructn. bottled water was sent to schools impacted by the break. we ll take a quick break w. we ll have you weather and traffic when we come back. stay with us. here s your four-day forecast. mostly cloudy, warmer today, right now near 30. afternoon highs low to mid-40s. then tomorrow, might getome cold rain mornin during the afternoon. then after sunset into the evenin some accumulating, wet snow, mainlyn gssy areas. how s traffic, jerry?
