Miami Officer Daniel Ubeda Reprimanded for Trump Mask

Police Chief Jorge Colina, who has since retired, said at the time that the officer's actions were unacceptable and a violation of departmental policy. Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle directed her staff to "look into the matter" over concerns that the officer's actions constituted voter intimidation. Even Miami Mayor Francis Suarez weighed in, tweeting that the cop, later identified as Daniel Ubeda, was under investigation and that "disciplinary measures will be taken."
I have spoken to Chief Colina and we agree that the officer’s behavior is unacceptable. This was a violation of departmental policy.
He is under investigation and disciplinary measures will be taken.— Mayor Francis Suarez (@FrancisSuarez) October 20, 2020

Miami ACLU Denounces Homeless Encampment Crackdown

What bothered Barnes wasn't just the absence of the people she'd become accustomed to seeing — people whose trust the group gained by showing up every weekend and providing necessities. She also felt disturbed by the sight of their belongings in heaps on the sidewalk. Barnes especially worried about one man she'd come to know who used a wheelchair.
"By the time we got there, his wheelchair was on the corner," she says. "There were piles and piles of tents, food, people's clothing, their belongings."
As she subsequently learned, the City of Miami had cleared out the encampment as part of a new crackdown on people living on city streets. According to lawyers and advocates for the homeless, city staff gave the people at the 17th Street encampment an ultimatum on February 10: go to a hotel and quarantine, or go to jail.

Abuse Allegations at Homestead Shelter for Migrant Children

The facility is located near polluted areas where the U.S. military dumped hazardous chemicals. It's well-documented that the detention center stands in close proximity to toxic U.S. military Superfund sites. The American Friends Service Committee released a report in September 2019 showing that the sites contain soil and water contaminated by dangerous levels of lead, mercury, arsenic, and other chemicals. The study didn't cite evidence of a link between the presence of toxic chemicals and children's exposure to them. But when the study was released, advocates demanded the federal government produce evidence that it had conducted soil testing to make sure children didn't come in contact with lead or arsenic while in detention. There's no indication the feds ever did so.

Miami, Florida, COVID Vaccine Age Requirements

To qualify for a vaccine, a person must provide a signed authorization from their doctor listing the patient's name, the condition for which they're being treated, the doctor's recommendation for a vaccine, and a signature.
Jackson does not announce far in advance when appointments will be available, partly over concerns that non-Florida residents will book the slots. The hospital system announces when appointments will be available on Twitter and Instagram a few minutes before the online portal opens.
When the online appointment portal opens today, patients will be asked whether they're 55 or older, whether they're being treated for any of the aforementioned conditions, and whether they have a doctor's note recommending them for a vaccine.

Biden to Reopen Homestead Shelter for Migrant Children

When the Democratic presidential debates were held in Miami back in June 2019, several candidates visited the Homestead Temporary Shelter for Unaccompanied Children, an unlicensed and for-profit detention center that held thousands of migrant children who came to the U.S. without their parents throughout the administrations of presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump. The shelter became the subject of national scorn because of reports of sexual abuse, negligent hiring practices, overcrowding, and human-rights violations. Some children described crying themselves to sleep at night, worrying they would never be released.
The Democratic candidates and campaign representatives who visited Homestead that summer — Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, Julian Castro, Kirsten Gillibrand, Marianne Williamson, Elizabeth Warren, John Hickenlooper, Bill de Blasio, and Tulsi Gabbard, plus Bernie Sanders' wife and adviser Jane — made some speeches, stood on ladders to get a look at the shelter behind a tall fence, and summoned the attention of national media outlets.
