Political Thinking with Nick...

of an ideology of state communism? did it...? does it now have consequences? yeah, absolutely. i think that one of the reasons why you can read, you can hear in the news of bombs falling on lviv, lvov, where my father was born. it's not in the sort of front line, obviously, because it's in different parts of poland, but different part of ukraine. just for people who don't know, lvov in poland, that's where your father was from, where your grandfather was prosperous, became part of the soviet union, and then later now in ukraine. absolutely. so, i think that one of the reasons for that is because the soviets were on the winning side and never had to ask themselves any questions. you know, one of the first documents that came out of the first personal folder that i picked up on my desk when i began this book was my grandfather, alfred, who was involved in the nuremberg trials, had a copy of the indictment of the nuremberg defendants. as you can imagine, that's quite a powerful document, to hold in your hands.

get in his acquittal -- >> he walks free. >> immediately. >> this wasn't just any plea raven was offered an alfred plea. meaning he would not be offered -- that did not sit well with prosecutor frank's. >> it wasn't my decision to make. i try the cases, i'm not the administrator. that was up to my boss, and my supervisor. >> why did take the plea? >> i took the plea to get out. to get out. to have a guarantee day to get out, and be with my son. i felt that there was so much corruption, so much lying that was going into the trial, i just knew i wasn't going to get a fair trial.

an area to demonstrate. it's now 75 years since the ship empire windrush arrived at tilbury docks — and events are being held to mark the anniversary. it brought hundreds of skilled workers from the carribean to britain — to help rebuild after the war. alfred was among them. he's been telling us about his life here. i've lived here all these years. i've raised a beautifulfamily. oh, god, what a beautifulfamily. and the only thing i haven't got is money. that's all i haven't got! travel now, and this is how the tube is looking. there are minor delays on the piccadilly line between rayners lane and south harrow. now onto the weather with sara. good morning to you. it's been a pretty tricky week of weather this week. because yes, it's been dry and settled, but obviously at times it's been really cloudy and quite cool under that cloud.
