Airmen failed to wear seatbelts, helmets in fatal wreck outside Kuwait base, Air Force finds

By COREY DICKSTEIN | STARS AND STRIPES Published: April 5, 2021
Speed and the failure to follow safety regulations were factors in the death of a 26-year-old U.S. airman, who was killed in September during a rollover wreck of an armored vehicle outside a Kuwait air base, an Air Force investigation determined.
None of the three Air Force Security Forces airmen inside the Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected All Terrain Vehicle, or M-ATV, were wearing helmets or seatbelts, when the driver lost control of the 28,000-pound vehicle, flipping it over and ejecting Senior Airman Jason Khai Phan, an investigation board found. Phan, who was seated behind the driver, was killed instantly in the Sept. 12, 2020, wreck near the end of a 12-hour security patrol just outside Ali Al Salem Air Base, where he and the others were deployed.

As the Army faces tighter budgets in the coming years, keen observers wonder whether ambitious modernization programs will be curtailed to make way for end-strength growth, or vice versa.
“We’d like a much bigger Army, but what I have to do at my level is say, you know, what can we actually afford,” Army Chief of Staff Gen. James McConville said Wednesday during a virtual discussion hosted by the Heritage Foundation. “That’s what we’re taking a hard look at.”

Australia's military operations in the Middle East ended three years ago – or did they? | Australian military

Neither Australia’s Department of Defence nor Britain’s Ministry of Defence have formally announced Australian involvement in the drone strikes, which are apparently the consequence of a shortage of British pilots due to “stresses of piloting deadly unmanned aircraft”.
The secretive Australian involvement in the Middle East drone strikes was revealed by Drone Wars (a monitor of unmanned aircraft use) after it was detailed in attachments to Britain’s Infrastructure and Projects Authority – an overseer of major UK public spending projects.
It was subsequently reported in the Guardian and in the defence industry magazines UAS and Aviation.
Despite even having being re-reported in the Australian air force’s own magazine, Wings, the defence department has still refused to provide any meaningful details at all.

The M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System was developed for the United States Army in the late 1990s to deliver precision rocket strike capabilities at stand off range. Mounted on a standard military truck frame, the HIMARS can carry up to six rockets or a single MGM-140 ATACMS missile.

Kuwait takes delivery of 2 Caracal helicopters with 28 more coming during 2021 in 1.7 billion euro deal

Cairo: Kuwait has taken delivery of two Caracal helicopters, the first in a deal worth 1.7 billion euros.
The Kuwaiti army said it launched the new arrivals at a ceremony on Thursday at the Ali Al Salem Airbase attended by military chief of staff Gen. Khalid Saleh Al Sabah.
They will be used in search, rescue and medical evacuation missions as well as transporting VIP personalities and emergency aid to disaster-hit zones, the army added on its Twitter account.
The two are part of an order for 30 H225M Caracal multirole utility helicopters placed by Kuwait with the aircraft maker Airbus.
