Former President George W. Bush revealed that Condoleeza Rice, who served as his secretary of state, beat out President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump as his top choice on the 2020 ballot.
"She knows it. But she told me she would refuse to accept the office," Bush, 74, told
People Magazine.
Bush, a Republican, made the revelation shortly after he described today's GOP party as "isolationist, protectionist and, to a certain extent, nativist."
He amended those comments in his latest interview to say that he shouldn't have painted the whole party as being that way.

Laughable or laudable? George W Bush's strange, artistic second act

Laughable or laudable? George W Bush’s strange, artistic second act
Since his secret passion was exposed by a hacker, Bush has painted dogs, world leaders, and now immigrants. What is he trying to tell us?

George W Bush, the former US president, is enjoying a second career as a painter. His new book, Out of Many, One: Portraits of American Immigrants, publishes 43 of his works. Seven of them are on the cover: smiling out, above a sharp-chinned picture of the German-born NBA player Dirk Nowitzki, is a portrait of the Afghani women’s-rights activist Roya Mahboob. Depending on your own politics, Mahboob is an unlikely or entirely predictable subject for a pro-life president – laughable or laudable. Full of contradictions, W’s art reveals more than it has any right to.

George W. Bush: Today's GOP is 'isolationist, protectionist, and to a certain extent, nativist'

Former President George W. Bush said on Tuesday that today’s Republican Party is far from what it used to be.
“I would describe it as isolationist, protectionist and to a certain extent nativist,” Bush said to host Hoda Kotb during an appearance on NBC's "Today."
“Well, that’s not exactly my vision, but you know what, I’m just an old guy they put out to pasture," he added. "So just a simple painter.”

The former president also said that he thinks a GOP candidate with progressive positions on immigration laws, young immigrants brought to the U.S. by their parents, gun reform and funding for public schools has a shot to win the White House in 2024.

George W. Bush says failure of immigration reform one of his biggest regrets

Former President George W. Bush said during an interview that aired Sunday that one of his biggest regrets was a failure to reform the U.S.'s immigration system.
In an interview excerpt broadcast on CBS' "Sunday Morning" anchor Norah O’Donnell asked Bush what he considered to be the biggest disappointment of his presidency, referring to a 2006 speech from the Oval Office in which Bush said "America can be a lawful society and a welcoming society at the same time."
When O'Donnell said it had been 15 years since that address and "still nothing's been done," Bush responded: "No, a lot of executive orders, but all that means is that Congress isn't doing its job."
