Throughout history the tradition and fashion for choosing a child’s name has changed significantly. Let’s take a look at how Russians have decided the issue of naming a newborn.

In the course of his speech, Musk mentioned the possibility of launching an electric car production facility in Russia. Tesla may eventually build a plant in Russia, says Bloomberg citing the carmaker’s CEO Elon Musk. Speaking at a Kremlin-sponsored event for students on 21 May, Musk covered a number of topics ranging from his hiring practices to artificial intelligence and the future of human consciousness. Among other things, he praised the history of Russia’s space achievements and expressed openness to build a Tesla Inc. factory in the country one day. “I think we’re close to establishing a Tesla presence in Russia, and I think that would be great,” said the entrepreneur. “Over time, we will look to have factories in other parts of the world, potentially Russia at some point.”
Wind energy accounts for only a small part of Russia’s energy mix, and recent changes to a state support scheme are likely to harm an already weak industry. Wind farms may lose all production payments from the Russian state if they fail to meet localisation, export and production goals. Wind power operators in Russia will face huge fines for missing localisation and export targets under a recently approved state support scheme, says Windpower Monthly. The new scheme for projects commissioned in 2025-2035 will involve tenders that are scheduled for September 2021. The government is going to allocate 177 million rubles ($2,3 million) to support about 3 gigawatts of new capacity. However, industry groups consider this level of support to be inadequate and warn that it may lead to job losses in the Russian wind sector.

Photo: 2013 Robert S. Donovan Although achieving net-zero emissions seems to be an unattainable goal for Russia given its commodity-dependent economy, there are still many low-carbon initiatives that can be successfully applied to reduce environmental pollution. International oil companies investing in the Russian energy industry are seeking low-carbon projects, as green agenda advances, says S&P Global Platts. Last week, global and regional heads of energy companies, as well as Russian policymakers, discussed problems of decarbonisation of the country’s oil and gas industry during a virtual dialogue organised by the Moscow School of Management’s Skolkovo Energy Centre. The dialogue participants acknowledged that putting oil and gas out of the majority of the energy mix before 2050 “was out of question”. At the same time, meeting goals under the Paris Climate Agreement will require improving operational efficiency of Russian industry players as well as the use of compensatory mechanisms.
Photo: Antti Leppänen Russia has a chance to improve its trade balance with China through coal exports, as Beijing is seeking to diversify its supplies. Last year, the People’s Republic already increased coal imports from Russia, Mongolia and Indonesia, while Australia remained the largest supplier. China’s coal imports from Russia may increase, says South China Morning Post attributing this to Beijing’s attempts to diversify its coal supply away from Australia amid ongoing tensions with Canberra. For its part, Russia is aiming to supply more coal to its biggest trading partner, which is the world’s largest energy consumer. Since May 2020, Russia’s trade balance with China has turned from a surplus to a deficit, says Emerging Markets Economist at Capital Economics Liam Peach, explaining it by a fall in exports of oil and gas and an increase in imports of electrical machinery and equipment. According to Peach, energy exports to China made up around 15% of Russia’s total energy exports before the coronavirus outbreak.

Photo: AdnaloyMTA Russia should intensify the development of “green” hydrogen technologies, considers Germany, as the two countries have great potential for co-operation here. The existing infrastructure for natural gas transportation can be adapted to ship hydrogen, which is more environment-friendly than gas. Germany is in close communication with Russia about the potential of “green” hydrogen production and transport, says Reuters citing German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Peter Altmaier. Speaking at a Russian-German conference last week, the official assumed that Russia could work with Germany on the production and transport of green hydrogen. “We offer Russia deeper co-operation,” he said. Russian Minister of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov responded that Russia would prioritise investments in these technologies. “I am convinced that this intention will be of interest to German and Russian companies active in that sector,” he added.
