Symposium retraces steps to anti-Asian racism

Asian Americans are facing a crisis. Random acts of violence against individuals have escalated, as the recent mass shootings in Atlanta and the wave of street attacks perpetrated particularly against older people have made clear. But beyond the headlines, as an online webinar on Thursday illuminated, the problem is deeper: centuries of entrenched racism, much of which has been fostered, if not engendered, by the media and the fears of white America.
“These conditions we are experiencing now are not new,” said Vivian Shaw, a Harvard College fellow and co-principal investigator of the AAPI COVID-19 Project, a partnership between the Department of Sociology and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). “They are embedded in the history of the U.S., in the history of racism, and the history of imperialism.”

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A now removed Bay Area job posting by a tech company on LinkedIn has drawn immense criticism for requiring applicants to be "non-Asian."
Stephen Li's girlfriend was on LinkedIn earlier this month when she noticed a posting by the tech company Aptude. Upon closer inspection under "job requirements" were the words "non-Asian".
"My girlfriend found it and was so shocked and she sent it to me. I definitely wasn't going to let it go unnoticed, so I decide I would post it on LinkedIn more as an effort to increase awareness both in the professional world and to get eyes from the company itself and from LinkedIn," said Stephen via text with ABC7 News anchor Dion Lim.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- After receiving dozens of stories of attacks on the Asian American community ABC7 News anchor Dion Lim began noticing a trend: very few are actually reported to the police.
In recent days, Dion received videos showing a woman getting dragged through an Oakland street in a strong-armed robbery as she clung to her purse. Less than five minutes away, another woman was attacked for her bag and her car was stolen.
In San Francisco, a man was knocked to the ground in Japantown for his cellphone. He Google translated what happened on his wife's device, indicating he had been approached by a man showing him a book. In reality, the man had used the book as a distraction.
