Superhero cinema reached its mature stage with The Dark Knight

looks back at the highest grossing movie in America from every year since 1960. In tracing the evolution of blockbuster cinema, maybe we can answer a question Hollywood has been asking itself for more than a century: What do people want to see?

Film culture, especially popular film culture, moves in fits and starts. There’s a lot of money on the line, and the people in charge are responsible for making sure that money stays secure. If something works, Hollywood studios figure that it’ll work again. Audiences get used to seeing the things they like, and they’ll go see the fourth movie in a series even if they thought the third one was only okay. This column has covered a lot of boring, uninspired, formulaic drivel. But every once in a while, the energy changes, and the world feels it, like a sudden drop in barometric pressure. A couple of fresh new things capture the public imagination, and the world rearranges itself around those things.

Real World's Eric Nies says he was nearly Batman Forever's Robin

Real World world 29 long, strange years after the series first debuted on MTV. Said intervening period involved a lot of changes for everyone involved, not least of which because they’d suddenly transformed from “7 twentysomethings with the free time to let themselves be filmed bickering in a house for several weeks” into some of American TV’s first reality stars. For Nies, that apparently involved becoming friends with director and producer Joel Schumacher, who took over the
Batman film franchise after Warner Bros. asked Tim Burton to take his creepy clown obsession elsewhere in the aftermath of
Batman Returns. Schumacher was apparently so impressed by the then-24-year-old Nies that he reported tried to make some moves to get him cast in the Robin role that eventually went to Chris O’Donnell, but the decision was (again, according to original

Leto's Joker now wearing a crown of thorns, for Christ's sake

We knew that the long-awaited second coming of
Justice League, the new, irresponsibly long cut of the not-great movie from 2017, was going to change things. We knew, for example, that Batman would at long last be able to say “fuck” on film (perhaps when stubbing his toe really hard) and that some people were probably going to get hacked up real good. But we weren’t prepared for just how apocalyptic the arrival of the Snyder Cut would truly be—that it would, in fact, give us Jared Leto’s Joker in full-on Jesus Christ cosplay.

Vanity Fair first heralded the arrival of this new, even more twisted version of Leto’s Joker by showing off his long, greasy, turned-his-back-on-the-social-norms-of-regular-haircuts look earlier this month. And now that the rest of the seals have opened, they’ve returned with a longer piece on the making of the Snyder Cut that shows us a photo of Joker, comic book supervillain, dressed up in a grimy robe, hands and eyes raised toward God, with a crown of thorns atop his clown head.

Batman Forever Schumacher: Retro FAQ by Rob Bricken

There are many, many reasons 1995's
Batman Forever is hard to watch by young nerds who’d been delighted by Tim Burton’s first movies. For them, it was crushing disappointment that the first superhero movie franchise that wasn’t solely aimed at kids was devolving into the silliness of the campy ‘60s show. Now people are coming around on Schumacher’s
Batman & Robin for that same reason, but
Batman Forever is caught in between. It’s a natural evolutionary step from Burton to
B&R, but it’s trying to be brooding and campy in the same movie, and those are canceling each other out. So

Here's the full trailer for Zack Snyder's Justice League

This morning, HBO Max released a new trailer for
Zack Snyder’s Justice League, a.k.a. “the Snyder cut,” a.k.a. “a very expensive remake of a movie that people generally didn’t like the first time around but now it’s four hours long and Zack Snyder has been given free rein to do whatever the hell he wants with it.” As you can probably guess, the new trailer is extremely serious and dramatic, which at least befits the amount of internet fervor that Snyder loyalists have built up for every little scrap of information about this thing, but it all might seem a little, you know,

Zack Snyder reveals Jared Leto's Joker in Justice League

Zack Snyder has taken steps to comply with our demand that he explain himself, Re: last week’s blurry photo of Jared Leto’s Nu-Nu Metal Joker in the Snyder Cut of
Vanity Fair to (quite literally) clear things up with a set of very tasteful black-and-white photos of a Joker that appears to have picked the entirely wrong fucking time in history to enter a Marilyn Manson phase. Like you, this Joker has also been growing out his hair in quar:

Per
Vanity Fair, this iteration of the Joker appears to Ben Affleck’s Batman in another one of those post-apocalyptic Darkseid dream sequences. Snyder says he always planned to eventually have this Joker and Batman share the screen, and being allowed to complete his cut of
