reporter: venezuela s dark lurch into poverty and chaos is on display as you drive in to the capital, this food truck breaking down for mere seconds before it was looted. basic food is scarce. no shortage of bleach, but long lines for bread. this crisis all created by the mad policies of a government that now wants to hide the collapse, cracking down on an intimidating journalists. we had to go undercover and much of our filming was done covertly to avoid arrest. with some poor nearing starvation the people demand change in violent clashes. tens of lives lost, as desperation meets tear gas and police bird shot. you ve heard from the molotov cocktail, well that would be too simple for a once suave gas rich state so this is the pooppotov,
Would day and the material would be gone. he is determined to share his footage with the world. i continued for about an hour or hour and a half and i left and up loaded the material on youtube so everyone could see it. so that everyone could know who was wrong and who was right. viewers of his video identify the shooter. but it isn t until after the presidential election that he files a report with the prosecutor s office. no charges ever have been filed. although the bird shot remains in his eye he can see. since the shooting he quit his accountant job and works full time as a reporter and photographer for on tv where he continues to capture egypt s violence. coming up, a sports photographer gets too close to the action.

President mohammed morsi on july the 3rd. we re getting conflicting reports of the death toll. many of the casualties were brought here, the home base of the pro-morsi supporters when you talk to the doctors here, they say between 50 and 70 people were killed, more than 2,000 injured, but the health ministry is saying 46 people killed and more than 600 people injured. we re also getting conflicting reports. when you talk to the demonstrators they are protesting and marching towards the downtown area, that, of course, morsi protesters when all of a sudden the forces started firing at them with live weapons and bird shot, but they deny this. they say they didn t fire any weapons, all they used was tear gas. we ve also reviewed some amateur video of the clashes from last night and we see what appeared to be people on on both sides in civilian clothes, also see people in civilian clothes next to police officers firing guns,

[inaudible] i m sorry? how many students were at risk? in the classroom, it looks like about 28 students in the classroom. by talking to this young man, may have saved 20 or 30 lives? what we do know he was armed with a shotgun. he shot someone. he tried to shoot one else. the teacher is trying to get the students to evacuate during the back door. during that process the teacher and campus supervisor engaged him in conversation and allowing the students to get out, and then he put the weapon down. 0 shotgun rounds on him. these are 12-gauge, and we we haven t inspected the type of ammunition yet, but it could be bird shot, and could be a mixture. i don t know. was he wearing protective fear? not that i know of.
Finally being able to actually get the rest of the protesters out and so far, none of them have come back. there was one person who was killed in the battle overnight. he was shot with what s called bird shot, which means at some point, the egyptians were authorized to put in shotgun shells and use them against this crowd. that goes to show how serious egyptian police have been coming about protecting the embassy here. global media reports there was a credible threat by a jihadi group based in the sinai peninsula against the american embassy here and over the past couple of days, we have seen a huge amount of presence around the american embassy, including the egyptian building concrete walls in the middle of the street, not only to prevent cars from approaching the u.s. embush era tax cuts but also now to prevent any people from getting within about 150 yards of the u.s. embassy despite the protesters best efforts, so far those concrete barriers are holding.
With tear gas and bird shot. you got into these villages to tell the story in bahrain. it has to be a challenge for journalists, not just cnn and anywhere around the world. to tell the story accurately. and journalists are having a very difficult time doing that. we re one of the few crews in the world that is able to get into these villages because the government is assigning government minders to essentially baby sit journalists and only show them the view of bahrain that the government wants the world to be shown. once we have our minders, we were given minders, they would bring us to the shopping mall or when we asked to see the villages, they wouldn t take us. they wouldn t let us shoot any video of the military. it was through a very narrow lens and unfortunately that s the way the whole world is being
