Google Joins 30 Tech Companies to File Court Brief in Support of H-4 EAD, Work Authorization for Spouses of H-1B Workers


Google joined 30 U.S.-based tech companies May 14 to file a “friends of the court” amicus brief supporting H-4 EAD, work authorization for spouses of H-1B workers on track for green cards.
“Google is proud to support our nation’s immigrants. We joined 30 other companies to protect the H-4 EAD program which spurs innovation, creates jobs and opportunities, and helps families,” tweeted Google Indian American CEO Sundar Pichai.
“H-4 EAD authorizations for the spouses of high-skilled workers help American companies recruit and retain the world’s best talent,” tweeted Kent Walker, senior vice president of global affairs at Google.

Google backs work authorization for H1B visa spouses


Google is reportedly leading a huge effort by US tech giants to back a program that gives the spouses of H1B visa holders authorization to work in the US. The multinational tech company is joined by 30 other firms in support of the H4 EAD (Employment Authorization Document) program. 
 
H4 visas are issued by United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to the immediate family members (spouses and children under the age of 21) of H1B visa holders. Tech companies rely on the H1B visa program to recruit tens of thousands of people every year from countries such as China and India.

San Francisco, May 15 : Google has filed a legal brief with over 40 companies including Apple, Amazon, Twitter and Microsoft to protect a work authorisation programme that allows the spouses of H-1B visa holders to work in the US.
The earlier Donald Trump administration had proposed to end the issuing of work authorisation (H-4 EAD) for certain spouses of high-skilled talent who came to the US on H-1B visas as part of his anti-immigration policy.
US President Joe Biden has already permitted dependents of H-1B visa holders to continue working in the country. The development is expected to provide relief to over 1 lakh Indian nationals who had moved to the US along with their spouses for work.
