The vaccine will cost Rs 300 for States
Amid protests from politicians and public health voices on the differential pricing of Covid-19 vaccines, Serum Institute of India has reduced the selling price on its Covishield by ₹100 for State governments.
“As a philanthropic gesture on behalf of @SerumInstIndia, I hereby reduce the price to the states from Rs.400 to Rs.300 per dose, effective immediately; this will save thousands of crores of state funds going forward. This will enable more vaccinations and save countless lives,” Serum Chief Executive Adar Poonawalla tweeted.

Covishield pricing whips up a political storm

The concerns are over vaccine equity and that some States would get left behind.
Serum Institute of India (SII) chief executive Adar Poonawalla has stirred a hornet’s nest, politically, with the pricing structure he recently announced for Covishield vaccine.
A day after SII announced that Covishield would be priced at ₹400/dose for States and ₹600/dose for private hospitals, key political voices, including Congress President Sonia Gandhi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and DMK leader MK Stalin, have been raised against the “differential pricing mechanism”. The concern was over vaccine equity, and whether some States would get left behind.

The foreign ministers of India and the United States held a telephonic conversation on Monday to discuss recent developments in the region, particularly in Afghanistan and Myanmar. The two sides also discussed the coronavirus pandemic and "health cooperation" amid the surge in the Covid-19 cases in India. However, the White House refused to respond when asked about the export ban on certain raw materials needed for ramping up the production of Covid-19 vaccine.
External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar on Monday said, "Spoke to my US counterpart Secretary of State @SecBlinken this evening. The conversation covered recent developments in India's immediate and extended neighbourhood. Exchanged views on the UNSC agenda. Also discussed issues pertaining to our health cooperation."

American export of 37 critical items controls risk Indian vaccine production

A report in The Economist said last week, the billionth dose of Covid-19 vaccine was produced.
It is a sign of how greatly manufacturing capacity has expanded over the past six months that the next billion doses could be produced by May 27th, according to Airfinity, an analytics firm.
“Yet this ambition is at risk from American export controls on raw materials and equipment. Production lines in India, making at least 160 million doses of Covid vaccine a month, will come to a halt in the coming weeks unless America supplies 37 critical items,” the report said.
Earlier, the world’s largest vaccine maker, Serum Institute of India’s (SII) Chief Executive Adar Poonawalla on Friday appealed to US President Joe Biden to lift the US embargo on exporting raw materials for Covid-19 vaccine production.
