While short-term relief for the duration of the pandemic is certainly necessary, the debate over stimulus checks has opened the door to a long overdue conversation about guaranteed basic income. But even that conversation often fails to address some of the most vulnerable among us: youth transitioning out of the foster care system. A new report from The Appeal’s The Lab makes the case for direct-cash programs initiated at a local level that offer the potential to empower young adults leaving foster care not just to survive, but to thrive. Children in foster care, and particularly those aging out of the system, are often left out of conversations about vulnerable communities in this country, despite the significant uphill battles they face. As of September 2019, there were 423,997 children in foster care in the United States, and as noted by the Washington Post, 20,000 of these children aged out of foster care because they never found permanent placement with families.

would meet pushback by campaign staff about going with them. why is that and what does it say regard to the campaign's relationship to the press and regarding to hillary clinton's reputation? >> i think there was a lot of distrust there. there was a lot of control, image control. in fairness, they thought they were going to win. so why would you take a risk with a story you didn't commission, come up with and shape. they can't shape the "new york times" stories obviously so there was always an element of risk. but to your point, it really hard to find new chapters of hillary clinton's life. people feel they already know her. i spent a lot of time digging into when she was a lawyer for at children's defense fund and give voters a sense of who this person is. >> you're on tour from the book.

party of kamala harris and these young up and coming leaders. i think that today is an amazing show of strength and leadership from hillary clinton. it's also the graceful end of a dynasty and a legacy. even more importantly, i think that where she began with her activism, at the children's defense fund, you'll kind of see that go if you recafull circle s out of the arena of politics and back into the arena of activism. >> a third of the democratic members of congress are not attending. david axelrod, when you hear democrats on twitter or elsewhere talk about not wanting to normalize this day, what do you think of that? >> you know, just to encourage twitter outrage, i will say, i find it bewildering. because the fact of the matter is that donald trump will stand on that platform today. he will take the oath of office.
