Henry H. Gutterson

Henry H. Gutterson, Supervising Architect of St. Francis Wood
"Truthful to the many styles and variation of styles as reflects the people of California."

Henry H. Gutterson, Supervising Architect of St. Francis Wood -
The career of San Francisco architect Henry Gutterson spans the first half of the 20th Century. Beginning in 1905, when he graduated from the School of Architecture at the University of California Berkeley to his death in 1954, Gutterson's 50-year career most closely relates to the Beaux-Arts, Bay Area Arts and Crafts, and Academic Eclecticism periods. He attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts but was also influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement and he became one of the acknowledged practitioners of the early Bay Area Style. What set Gutterson and other young architects in the Bay Area style apart from others in the U.S. was, "the peculiar way of using historical forms and details, the complexity of forms and spaces, miniaturization, and fully exploiting the site as a major ingredient in creating romantic aura."

20 free things to do in Portland, Oregon
Lonely Planet Editors
12 February 2021
Portland, Oregon keeps it low key – this is a place that's all about paperback books and beer, pinball machines and pretty urban hikes, street art and soapbox derby races down the side of a dormant volcano. So it's no surprise that it's easy to find plenty of free things to do in Portland, from trails accessible by public transit to community art projects, street fairs, and unusual museums.
Here are twenty of the best free things to do in Portland, aka Rose City, Stumptown, Bridgetown, and PDX.
Editor's note: during COVID-19, there are restrictions on travel, and some of these free attractions may be temporarily closed or require pre-booking. Always check before departure, and be sure to follow local health guidance.

How did the changing architecture of jails reflect prison reform in St. Louis?

How did the changing architecture of jails reflect prison reform in St. Louis?
Time and time again, reformers have tried to cloak jails in beautiful architecture, hiding the actual purpose of the building.
Emil Boehl, Four Courts, 12th and Clark
Recent events at the City Justice Center in downtown St. Louis raise the question: How did we get here? Over the millennia in Western civilization, the act of detaining suspects has evolved as the time in which they're confined before a trial has lengthened. The founding of the United States on Enlightenment principles further developed the concept of “humane confinement.” The city of St. Louis likewise has seen a succession of jails over the course of the past two centuries that mirror the evolution of criminal justice in America and the action and reaction against perceived past abuses.

Trump executive order on architecture seeks "beautiful" buildings — Quartz

December 24, 2020
US president Donald Trump waited until his final full month in office to make a new rule dictating the look of federal buildings. Trump’s 203rd executive order, titled “Promoting Beautiful Federal Civic Architecture,” seeks to establish “traditional architecture,” exemplified in Greek and Roman antiquity, as America’s official architectural brand. Backed by the National Civic Arts Society, a Washington-based group that promotes classical arts and architecture, the law is a rebuke of modernism.
Listed in the executive order are preferred building styles like Neoclassical, Georgian, Beaux-Arts, Art Deco, Gothic, Romanesque, Pueblo Revival, and Spanish Colonial. Any designs that deviate will have to go through additional hurdles to get approved. A newly-established council, chaired by a member of the Commission of Fine Arts, will have oversight over the matter. With two women on the commission finishing their term this year, the panel will be comprised of seven men.
