MTEN: Clemson's Upset Bid Falls Just Short at No. 2 South Carolina – Clemson Tigers Official Athletics Site

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Clemson Men’s Tennis team went toe-to-toe against the nation’s second-ranked team but ultimately fell in a narrow 4-2 decision in the ITA Kickoff Weekend opener against South Carolina (2-0) in the Palmetto Series Presented by SC Education Lottery. The Tigers (2-1) claimed the doubles point decisively and battled closely in singles, but ultimately could not hold on to pull the upset in the 115th all-time meeting between the programs.  “I was glad to see our guys come out the right way in doubles today and it paid off,” said Head Coach Brandon Wagner, coaching in his first rivalry match. “We knew it was going to be a battle no matter what - and it was. Credit to South Carolina for playing well in some important moments at the end. It was great experience for some of our freshmen to fight til the end and learn from this moment. We didn’t play our best at some spots, but that happens and we will address that - I know our guys will be ready for the opportunity tomorrow to go after it again.” South Carolina was coming off a road win over then-No. 1 Virginia in their last match, and new Head Coach Brandon Wagner and the Tigers gave them all they could handle in Columbia on Saturday. The match came down to two three-set singles matches between a pair of freshmen, with the Gamecocks’ Jelani Sarr prevailing against Marko Mesarovic, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, when a deep shot from the Tiger freshman was called out. Stewart Aronson also battled from down a set, and looked poised to claim his singles match when the Gamecocks clinched. He led 5-2, 30-0 in the third set.  The Tigers await their next opponent for tomorrow, either LSU or Louisville, who match up at 1 p.m. Sunday’s match will start at 10 a.m. and is available to stream here.  Clemson roared to start doubles, going up a break to take 3-1 leads on all three courts. Maxwell Smith and Spencer Whitaker put their foot on the gas on court one, taking down James Story and Casey Hoole, 6-2. Up 40-15, Smith’s serve down the middle was returned into the net to clinch the match. Marko Mesarovic and Stewart Aronson looked poised to claim a win on court two after taking a 5-1 lead, but a late charge from Samuel and Daryabeigi two games back.  That gave Ryuhei Azuma and Wissam Abderrahman time to finish off their match on court three, 6-4, against Da Silva and Sarr. Azuma served up 5-4, and tallied four straight points to clinch the doubles point when Abderrhamen volleyed South Carolina’s return at a difficult angle, which Sarr played into the net.   The Gamecocks claimed five first sets in singles, setting up a battle in the second sets.  Azuma dropped his match on court one, 6-1, 6-1 to tie the match at 1-1. Da Silva then beat Pitts, 6-1, 6-1 and Whitaker fought back from a 5-1 deficit in the second set before ultimately falling, 6-3, 6-4, giving South Carolina a 3-1 advantage.   Abderrahman continued his strong play into singles, claiming his first set 6-4 over No. 92 Casey Hoole on court two, and going up an early break in the second set. Hoole fought back, but Abderrahman had a huge break at 5-5, and would go on to win his match, 6-4, 7-5 to keep Clemson alive. In the remaining singles matches, freshmen Marko Mesarovic and Stewart Aronson each took early leads in their second sets. Aronson fought off match point with a key break to extend his second set on court five, and would hold to take a 6-5 lead and ultimately force a third set with a 7-4 win in the tiebreaker against fellow freshman Sean Daryabeigi.  Mesarovic, who bounced back from a 7-5 loss in the first set to win the second 6-4, fell down two breaks against Sarr in the third set, falling down 5-0. Mesarovic would take the next two games, and had another break bid fall just short as the Gamecocks clinched.  Aronson was out to a 5-2 lead in the third set when the match concluded.  FINAL: #2 South Carolina 4, Clemson 2 Records: Clemson: 2-1; South Carolina: 2-0 SINGLES (1,4,6,2,3) Toby Samuel (SC) def. Tigers Top Tar Heels in PK Shootout for Fifth ACC Tournament Championship

CARY, N.C. – Clemson and North Carolina played 110 minutes of even soccer before the Tigers outdueled the Tar Heels 5-3 in penalty kicks to take home the 2023 ACC Championship trophy. The 2023 championship gives the Tigers five ACC Tournament Championships in program history. First team all-conference selection Ousmane Sylla netted Clemson’s only goal in the match, before the Tigers were a perfect 5-for-5 on penalty kicks. Clemson is now 4-6-1 all-time in ACC Championship contests and gives the Tigers three ACC Tournament titles under head coach Mike Noonan.  The teams battled in the game’s opening 45, getting back-to-back opportunities and saves in the 25’. The Tigers had another opportunity to draw first blood in the 42’, but UNC’s Cordes made his second save of the day to keep the halftime score even at 0. North Carolina broke the nil-nil tie just two minutes into the second half on a goal by Quenzi Huerman. The Tigers began to pressure the UNC defense, taking seven shots over the next 20 minutes, before Sylla finally broke through and netted the equalizer in the 83’. Joran Gerbet sent the ball to Sylla who stutter-stepped, hesitated, then launched a ball past the UNC defense and a diving keeper into the top corner of the net for his 10th goal on the season. The Tigers took four shots in the two overtime periods compared to North Carolina’s zero, but couldn’t net a game-winner. Then, in penalty kicks, the teams traded makes in their first two attempts before Gerbet netted his attempt and North Carolina missed. The teams traded makes in their fourth attempts and then Alex Meinhard buried his attempt to give the Tigers the 2023 trophy. Next up – the Tigers await their NCAA Tournament seed and opponent. The NCAA selection show will be aired on NCAA.com on Monday, November 13, at 1 p.m.

Although Ransford Gyan will get most of the attention as the Gatorade National High School Player of the Year, all four players are unique positionally and in style.” “I believe that Vitor, Duncan and Ransford will compete for significant playing time early in their careers and Charlie will challenge Joseph Andema and our other goalkeepers every day. I want to credit my coaching staff for their diligence in securing this year's class and in particular, I’d  like to acknowledge Associate Head Coach Phil Jones for his tremendous work as our recruiting coordinator.”  Duncan Wilson Duncan Wilson is set to join the Tigers in January. The Columbia, S.C., native is the 2023 South Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year, a 2023 High School All-American and a member of the 2023 State Championship team with Cardinal Newman High School. He is the type of player I love to coach, hungry, willing to grow and driven to win. Duncan is a prototypical striker with an eye for the goal and an edge in his game. I love Duncan’s personality as he is a fun loving happy young man who balances his passion and discipline for soccer with great family values and a free spirit to enjoy life with his friends outside the game. We are looking forward to welcoming Duncan in January 2024.” Charlie Reed Charlie Reed will join the Tigers in the fall of 2024. Reed is a goalkeeper from Austin, Texas who has played with Austin FC. Charlie has great size, athleticism and presence in the goal which were all qualities Coach (Camilo) Rodriguez wanted to bring to Clemson. I also want to shout out to our Football coaching staff for alerting us to Charlie a couple years back as he is the younger brother of Clemson OL Ian Reed. Happy to be uniting the Reed family together in Tigertown.” Ransford Gyan Ransford Gyan joins the Tigers from St. Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark, N.J. Also, I loved it when I visited and I felt Clemson is the perfect place for me.” Mike Noonan on Ransford Gyan: “Ransford is an attacking personality with the soccer savvy to play multiple positions.  He plays with joy in his heart and a smile that will delight the Riggs faithful.  Ransford’s story is incredible and I would like to credit Ransford’s Mom back in Ghana, St Benedict’s Prep (Newark, NJ) and Coach Jim Wandling for developing such a beautiful human being. There is only one National High School Player of The Year and we are ecstatic that Ransford chose Clemson.” Vitor Geromel Vitor Geromel joins the Tigers from Wichita, Kan. and Maize South High School. Geromel is a USA Today National Player of the Year, a United Soccer Coaches All-American, and the United Soccer Coaches Kansas POTY. Geromel led Maize South to the 2021 KSHSAA 5A State Championship and an undefeated, 21-0, season. He’s also been on the ODP National Team and the US Youth Futsal National Team. Geromel is currently the valedictorian of his high school class with a 4.0 GPA. He is the son of Edo and Erika Geromel and has a younger sister, Gisele.  On choosing Clemson:  “I chose Clemson because of the amazing coaches, great facilities, and the program’s focus on the athletes’ academics and athletics.” Mike Noonan on Vitor Geromel: “Since the moment Vitor set foot on our campus at our summer camp two years ago, we both knew Clemson was going to be his new home.  Vitor was recommended to us by my old professional Coach Keith Tozer who at the time, was the US National Team Futsal Coach and had Vitor in his developmental youth teams. Vitor has developed magnificently over the past two years and reminds me of the Brazilian great Socrates with his majestic presence on the field.”
