found 80% displayed a happy expression, but behind those happy faces were conservative female politicians who looked happier and more attractive than liberals. reasons for this happiness abound. you are not surrounded by gloom and doom. it is easier to walk in heels without cloven hooves. i'm sure that breathing helps. but the study's authors find that a finding make sense because previous research has also highlighted this link between attractiveness and conservativism. which means it is time for a gratuitous shot of dana perino. isn't she lovely? that is without makeup. here she is with makeup. yeah. so why are conservative so hot? what could be the reason for this? are liberal women really uglier than conservative women and that is why they still wear useless masks when driving alone in

nikki haley's responses? >> i think the former president is correct. i just wish you talked a little bit more like this when he was the sitting president. we understand for all the political reasons why he couldn't. i'm happy to see that tone now even if it is when he is out of office. nikki haley is almost irrelevant. here i feel deeply insulted by her comments. but i think it is far more important to talk about the issue of tim scott here. tim scott as a friend of mine, full disclosure. and he and i agree on nothing politically. but i think he is deeply representative of a very serious and thoughtful and intentional conservative elements of african americans. mostly located in the deep south. south carolina and -- like tim scott. is it is a real sentiment, conservativism is a real thing in the african american community. for those who think he is anomalous for being conservative just did not spend that much time around black folks. what he is anomalous for as being a card carrying or publican. most consider black folks are smart enough to look around and

has been re-elected as the mayor of miami, and the son of the first cuban american mayor of miami, and he is making the rounds of the u.s. conference of mayors and traveling across the country with the optimistic message and time for the republicans to turn the page to fiscal conservativism, and one with optimism as well. we asked him what are the moments for the republican party, and his words are constructive. listen to this. >> there is no doubt that relitigating the 2020 election is no recipe for the republican party, and having a vision understanding that it is a generational moment, and people passing the baton from one to the next creates many tons for

other ways as well. a 2011 study found that women are twice as likely to be on antidepressants as men. and between 2000 and 2016 suicide rates found that suicides increased among women by 50% but only by 20% among men. these are not coincidences. these are a direct result of us rejecting the traditional values that conservativism still values. rachel: those same studies say that conservative women are the happiest among if all the groups. and it's precisely for what you said. so liberal women are complaining that men aren't masculine enough, don't want to take care of them, and yet feminism has told men that masculinity is toxic, and so now we have a generation of basement boys when back in the '80s it was raining men, good men, and now what's happened? >> absolutely. and both sexes have suffered as a result -- rachel: yes. >> men also have suffered as a direct result of feminism. but women need to keep in mind that we are naturally geared

>> i'm aishah hasnie. and they'll feast on a big banquet of barbecue. the main hall where the candidates will be speaking later today, but the g.o.p. presidential front runner donald trump not expected. rich edson joining us on the ground in des moines with a special guest. hi, rich. >> hey, good afternoon, aishah. the barbecue is coming a little later today. we've got some speeches coming up and that includes senator tim scott who recently declared he would be running for president. senator, thank you for joining us this afternoon. it's a crowded stage, a crowded field. how do you break through? >> easily, the optimistic positive message when i take it on the road, people are starving for optimism as long as it's anchored in conservativism and you have backbone. and i have both and that's good news for the american people and the campaign trail. >> you've talked about the positive message and explicit

about it. what do you think of the tone from some of the other candidates so far and generally in political discourse, do you think we've reached a point in this country where we're getting down in the mud too much? >> there's no doubt i believe that conservativism anchored in optimism is the way that we start winning elections. seven out of the late eight popular votes for president we have lost. the g.o.p., the great opportunity party has to give americans reasons to be optimistic and to look forward as well as defending the values that we love the most that we know leads to human flourishing. if we do both at the same time, give american a vision for the future and defend and conserve our foundation, we become the dominant party for the next generation of americans. >> we've got some more republicans entering the race, former governor chris christie, former vice-president mike pence, and how does that change the dynamics, do you risk in a crowded field getting lost in that. >> i don't. the good news i get to stand

i think when you are looking for conservativism and common sense, look in the right direction. i would love to get the whole piece of cake but we can't get the whole cake. joe biden controls the white house and democrats control the senate. about the best agreement you can get when you control half of one-third of government. >> john: and the way mccarthy put it this morning on "fox and friends." >> there's no new taxes, no new government programs. what i wanted to cut more, yes, but i was only to work at less than 15% of the budget. so i'm not quite sure what else they want to go. i think we have to look at where the victories are. >> john: he believes it's a big victory for him. i don't remember any debt ceiling bills with there many things attached to it. mccarthy said the democrats are getting nothing except a rise in the debt ceiling. however, members of the freedom caucus are adamant they are not going to vote for this, which means you've got to get democrats to come on board in the house.

charles: what do you guys make of tim scott whose announcement was completely different? [laughter] it was the really, i mean, energetic, in your face, on television and not other traditional media. he's polling low, but some say if there is so far some candidate that could be sort of, every year there's, every election cycle there's one that comes out of nowhere with, he might be the early choice for that. >> yeah, i think so, charles. he's often said tim scott is running on biography. he's going to the appeal in iowa to christian evangelicals. that's going to be a very important vote in there that mike pence is probably going to compete for with him. but beyond that, tim scott is making an argument about conservative principles, and he is not simply stating them, he is saying we have to convince people that our conservativism is right. he's doing an excellent job of describing how conservativism works for minorities, for schools, for religion, for the culture. and i think that persuasiveness is something a that really does appeal to a lot of people. charles: real quick, you wrote

republican primary polling that we don't see. that shows that he's got to be, number one, a cultural conservative or he's -- if he's going to start to take votes away from donald trump. but trump didn't really get to to where he was on cultural conservativism, he really got there on big issues like immigration and trade and unfair practices by china. and i think the ron desantis has taken cultural is a big issue, i think he's got to make his campaign about more than that if he's going to really be successful and also if he's going on the successful with the idea that he's winnable. if he's more winnable than donald trump, then he's got to do better with swing voters, and that means being able to be acceptable to more of the moderates of the country. he's not showing that so far. charles: there have been so many negative polls on president biden since he's been in office that, you know, you almost start to ignore them. i mean, particularly after the midterms, right? the 'em do accurates fare -- the
