chicago over the week. never night in new york city one dead and multiple shot in queens. las vegas a saturday night shooting left at least one dead and several shot. with the toll mounting, the clock is ticking in washington. democrats and republicans are scrambling to reach a deal on gun safety legislation. so will the talks fizzle out like they have so many times before? i will go to daniella for the state of play. >> reporter: pamela, there continues to be two major sticking points in these discussions with the bipartisan group that first came out with a framework over a week ago on gun safety legislation but now they're trying to finalize those details. one of the sticking points being the so-called boyfriend loophole. there is currently a disagreement between democrats and republicans over people who are prohibited from owning or purchasing guns because of a domestic violence conviction. currently the ban does not apply to dating partners.
when they come back on tuesday they could have some tex but these sticking points remain. sources tell us over the weekend that these negotiations are heading in a positive direction so we'll see what happens when they come back to washington, d.c. pamela? >> we will see. thank you. later this hour i will tell you more about the boyfriend loophole that's holding things up in the senate as daniella was talking about. on the surface most mass shooters seem to act alone with their own motivations for the carnage they create, but are there common threads that tie these shooters together? i want to bring in the co-author of the violence project, how to stop a mass shooting epidemic. he is also a criminal justice professor at metro state university. james, you've done so much research on this. you have talked to mass shooters. you have talked to people who would have been would be shooters, right? when we look at them we see a
expressing anger and frustration. share with us some of the conversations that you had here in the community? >> i've heard from a lot of people, folks who live here and folks who have travelled from far, sitting on this lawn, they are upset and they want accountability and action. i spoke with two teachers yesterday, who say they are frustrated when people bring up the idea that educators should take weapons inside of the classroom, they say they didn't sign up for that, and that's not what they want. i also spoke with a grandmother, and her granddaughter, and she was moved to tears as she talked about the 911 timeline, and something that happened at her daughter's school recently. listen in. >> i'm here with my granddaughter, daniella. she is a seventh grader.
