orleans guest: new orleans? what makes it special? host: what makes it, well, unique was the word i was going to use and a little bit different. it s one of the few unique places left. guest: i always say it s an ethnicity to come from new orleans. we have our own food, our own music and a real sense of place. it is not, it isn t like any other place in the country. it s much more mediterranean. it, in fact, in capital dames elizabeth playly, who s here in washington, is very much for the union, but as various times, as you know, i have trouble thinking of the south as our enemy. they re all our relatives in kentucky and in virginia and tennessee, and she says now new orleans, that s different. they re a bunch of french people in quadroons. so that was a sense that it was just a foreign place. now, it was a foreign place with a very important port, and that was true throughout the history of this country. but it was always welcoming and remains welcoming to al ....
