has unleashed another horrific attack and has claimed victory in mariupol. jeremy diamond is in south korea. jeremy, biden's first trip to asia is huge. but much of the world is still focused on ukraine and there was an urgent delivery for the president that sums things up. what are you hearing from the president today? >> reporter: that's right, jim. much of the world has been focused on the war in ukraine and so has the president's attention over the last several months. that's why on this trip president biden has sought to show allies in the region he is just as committed to this region, just as complmitted to completing the pivot to asia with foreign policy. we've heard president biden outline his approach to north korean denuclearization. talking about these alliances with south korea, japan.

to restart the military drills? >> reporter: well, both president biden and president yun of south korea agreeing to begin discussions to expand these military drills between the united states and south korea. now this marks a dramatic shift from president biden's predecessor former president trump who not only scaled back but moved to scrap the exercisesal together, calling them too costly and provocative as he pursued this grand bargain diplomacy with kim jong-un. president trump met three times with the north korean leader. but ultimately was not able to make any progress, any meaningful substantive progress toward the ultimate u.s. goal of denuclearization of north korea. now, president biden is really re-setting u.s. foreign policy as it relates to north korea during this five-day trip to south korea and japan. what we're seeing from president biden is a move toward a much more traditional u.s. foreign

south korea and the us acknowledge that the possibility for diplomacy on that issue is somewhat bleak when it comes to denuclearization. so we'll we'll watch this press conference to see exactly how both sides discuss the threat from north korea and exactly what kind of commitments they're going to be making in the future because so much of the conversation has in the past revolved around diplomacy when it comes to the new indo-pacific framework and what the presidents are trying to do to deepen economic ties that really focuses on trade and supply chains and on trade regulations. let's listen and hear what they're saying right now and numerous other new challenges confront our alliance. these challenges can be tackled only when countries sharing a universal values of liberal democracy and human rights come together. the u.s. alliance that's an exemplary model of such solidarity.
