VOA Executive Fired For Misconduct Quietly Rehired During Biden Era

February 25, 2021
Officials at the congressionally funded international broadcaster Voice of America quietly rehired an executive this week who had recently been put on administrative leave for misconduct and slated for firing over multiple whistleblower allegations of misconduct, fraud, and false education credentials, as well as a damning Office of Personnel and Management report.
John Lippman, acting VOA director of programming, announced that former Persian Division Director Setareh Derakhshesh Sieg would return as special assistant to the director of programming and director of program review.
Sieg’s return to the VOA comes shortly after she was placed on administrative leave at the beginning of January by former Deputy Director Elizabeth Robbins while under investigation for “multiple forms of misconduct.” The misconduct allegedly included allowing certain staff to “charge excessive overtime,” engaging in “potentially fraudulent expenditures,” abusing government funds, and falsified education credentials.

The new president of the federally funded Radio Free Asia network most recently ran a consulting company from Boise, Idaho that has represented foreign governments and interests. Among them is Taiwan.
That connection has startled veterans of the international broadcaster.
"Are you serious?" said Libby Liu, who led Radio Free Asia for 14 years. "I don't think it's appropriate for a registered lobbyist for a foreign government to be leading a free-press organization, even democracies we support and admire."

Voice of America journalists demand director's resignation over Pompeo event

By Joseph Choi - 01/14/21 03:38 PM EST

A group of journalists from Voice of America (VOA) are demanding that VOA Director Robert Reilly and Deputy Director Elizabeth Robbins resign, alleging they had used the news network “to stage a propaganda event” for Secretary of State Mike Pompeo
In the letter obtained by NBC News, the journalists also cited the “sudden and unexplained reassignments of White House Correspondent Patsy Widakuswara and Central News Director Yolanda Lopez” as reasons for the news agency’s leadership to resign.
Pompeo gave his first address on Monday since an angry mob attacked the Capitol, endangering lawmakers, staff, Capitol police and journalists in the building.
