Grace Church School defends 'Inclusive Language Guide'

A prominent Episcopal school in New York City is standing by its decision to publish an “Inclusive Language Guide” after the document received criticism for, among other things, encouraging students to refrain from using terms such as “Mom” and “Dad.”
The Grace Church School, a private Manhattan Episcopal school serving 770 students in “Junior Kindergarten-Grade 12,” published an “Inclusive Language Guide” to “address ways we can remove harmful assumptions from the way we interact with each other.”
The 12-page guide suggests students and teachers use alternatives to gender-specific words and phrases as well as other terms it sees as problematic.

WASHINGTON - H Street downtown was nearly deserted and few people noticed Monday morning when workers at St. John's Church took down dozens of sections of black steel mesh fencing, a barrier that had gone up during the tumultuous summer of 2020 when the church wound up at the center of national debates about race, religion and security.
Across a small park from the White House, St. John's had been known for decades as the "president's church" for its elite congregation, but in June made news worldwide. As protests against police brutality and racism boiled across the country, someone threw a flammable substance through a basement window at the church, igniting a small fire. Then, after federal law enforcement officers used gas and horses to clear protesters, President Donald Trump walked to the front of the church to pose for cameras, holding a Bible aloft. Soon local Episcopal leaders slammed Trump for the use of force and the Bible as, in their view, a prop.

A congregation in New York has installed a “blessing box” on their church property to provide food and clothing for those in need during the COVID-19 lockdowns.
St. James Episcopal Church of Batavia installed the box on Tuesday and filled it with various items, including food, toiletries, hats, gloves, socks, and face masks on Wednesday.
The box was the product of a collaboration between St. James Episcopal and three other nearby churches: Batavia First Presbyterian Church, First Baptist Church of Batavia, and Resurrection Roman Catholic Church.
