Rare melding of strategies may add more fuel to gains for energy and bank stocks

Article content
The strength of the recent rally in cheap stocks could trigger a rare shift in equity market dynamics that some investors expect will fuel the gains of financial and energy companies.
For much of the past decade, so-called momentum stocks have been on fire, layering gains upon gains. Meanwhile, unloved “value” stocks have limped behind, frustrating a generation of fund managers who made their reputation eking out equity market bargains.

Alarm bells are starting to ring across emerging markets as countries brace for a new era of rising interest rates.
After an unprecedented period of rate cuts to prop up economies shattered by Covid-19, Brazil is expected to raise rates this week and Nigeria and South Africa could follow soon, according to Bloomberg Economics. Russia already stopped easing earlier than expected and Indonesia may do the same.

GameStop mania didn't happen in a vacuum. It's just the most glaring example of the bubble-like behavior running rampant in the financial markets.
Long before an army of Reddit traders sent GameStop, AMC and other stocks "to the moon," evidence of extreme market speculation had been mounting.
None of this is normal. Rock-bottom interest rates are forcing investors to take extraordinary risks -- and for some, this will end badly.

LONDON, Jan 28 — Short-sellers are sitting on estimated losses of US$70.87 billion (RM287 billion) from their short positions in US companies so far this year, data from financial data analytics firm Ortex showed today.
The hefty losses come as shares of highly-shorted GameStop jumped more than 1,000 per cent in the past week without a clear business reason, forcing short-sellers to buy back into the stock to cover potential losses — defined as a short-squeeze — while retail investors then piled in to benefit from the surge.
