India's COVID-19 crisis: Flat-footed communication strategy, risk-averse bureaucracy add to distress
A flat-footed communication strategy and debilitating red-tapism that focuses on risk-aversion and indecision at the cost of efficiency is adding to the distress of India’s already severe Covid crisis. It is also spilling over onto the strategic space. The pandemic has already challenged India’s ‘regional power’ status. New Delhi has been forced to overturn a 17-year-old policy to accept foreign aid. As the virulent second wave continues to pummel India, the strategic consequences of the pandemic coupled with a ham-handed crisis mitigation approach may further constrain India’s foreign policy choices.

India must prioritise adapting eight highly vulnerable eastern cities for climate change, says report
Eight Indian states — Jharkhand, Mizoram, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh and West Bengal — are highly vulnerable to climate change, according to a national climate vulnerability assessment report. These states, mostly in the eastern part of the country, require prioritisation of adaptation interventions, the report pointed out. Among all states, Assam, Bihar and Jharkhand have over 60 percent districts in the category of highly vulnerable districts. Lack of forest area per 100 rural population was found to be one of the major drivers of vulnerability for Assam despite the fact that the state has a forest cover of 42 percent, followed by low road density, the report said.

India’s dietary patterns found to have smallest carbon footprint of several countries
A new study conducted by researchers at Tulane University, Louisiana, USA, shows that the carbon footprint of people following the dietary guidelines of different countries varies drastically. The study compared the dietary guidelines of seven countries namely the United States, the Netherlands, Oman, Germany, India, Uruguay and Thailand. Main food groups like fruits, vegetables, protein foods, oils/fats, dairy and grains were studied to see the consumption pattern of people belonging to these countries. These dietary guidelines are not uncommon as they are issued by many countries around the world, for their citizens to follow.
