council members. according to the mayor s office, baltimore has the highest municipal property tax rates in the state. the mayor wants to reduce it by 20 cents per $100 of value by 2020. she believes that will help her meet her goal of attracting 10,000 new families to the city in 10 years. the mayor says the city cannot afford to offer a more drastic property tax cut without slashing core services like public safety and education funding. but some question whether scaling back the property tax is enough to reverse years of population decline, fueled by factors including crime and the state of city schools. the city unfortunately has acquired a reputation, and while 20 cents off of property tax is certainly a good start, it may not be enough to overcome some of the the images that down. santorum says an illinois win would change the election. polls show an uphill battle. an american research group poll put romney 14 points ahead of rick santorum, while newt gingrich and ron paul largely sit out the state. and romney has more money to spend on ads like this one, highlighting santorum s endorsement of him in 2008. if you want a conservative as the nominee of this party, the city s high property-tax. it is hope the savings will bring more families back to baltimore. kim dacey is live with more details. the city council president introduced the bill last night. it seems it is getting a lot of support among other city council members. according to the mayor s office, baltimore has the highest municipal property tax rate in the state. the mayor wants to reduce it by 20 cents per $100 of value by 2020. she believes that will help meet her goal of attracting 10,000 new families to the city in 10 years. this is the beginning and not the end. and every penny that we go down makes us a little bit more competitive, and i am going to work to continue that downward trend. city council president jack young introduced the measure at monday night s meeting. he is confident the city can make up for the lost revenue by relying chiefly on slots income. when you go to atlantic city, you go to all these different places outside of the state of maryland, all you see is maryland tags. we want to keep those tags right here in baltimore. you think it s a safe bet? i think it is a safe bet. i think it s a safe bet, yeah. the savings for homeowners would be small at first. someone who owns a $250,000 home would save an average of $50 in 2013. in 2014, the tax bill would drop to $244. and by 2020, the homeowner would save 500 bucks. but some question whether scaling back the property tax is enough to reverse years of population decline fueled by factors including crime and the state of city schools. the city unfortunately has acquired a reputation, and while 20 cents off of property tax is certainly a good start, it may not be enough to overcome some of the the images that the city has sort of gathered over the last decade and a half. the mayor says the city cannot afford to offer a more drastic property tax cut without slashing core services like public safety and education funding. this bill will not come for a vote until later this spring. kim
