people are traveling for the thanksgiving holiday. we have a team of correspondents and meteorologists covering this for us today. gloria palomino is at laguardia in new york, nadia romero is in atlanta. let's begin with tom sater in the cnn weather center. okay, tom, walk us through these weather trouble spots today. >> paula, in the last hour the delays are really starting to pile up now. we had the one hour delays at newark for the winds, a widespread weather went for the east coast. laguardia, 30 to 45 minutes for the winds. now we can add boston into this because of rainfall. they are 30 to 45-minute delays. a grand stoppage at reagan international in d.c. because of the low ceiling and we could put delays in orlando because of volume. we have to punch here, everyone trying to travel in the afternoon and evening period, you throw the worst weather of the week into the largest cities. -- in -- it's nice, detroit get ready. you have heavy weather moving
>> i think it is better and we hope to not have a lot of cancellations because we -- make it home. the color of mexico tomorrow. >> there are a couple of delays, i believe mostly weather related, i'm not sure. there were a couple of delays. it wasn't going to get too bad, thank goodness, it has been pretty smooth so far. >> all, right so, paula wherever you go you will have a line. whether this is the aging assist, line special priority, -- i don't want to person say i am priority, i should have to wait in line. everyone is waiting in line today. we spoke with one woman who is a nurse and she says she's just happy to be back traveling since the pandemic. she says that the mood is just better everywhere she has went. paula? >> well, way to look on the upside. all right nadia, gloria, and tom thank you so much for the reports. still ahead, new reporting from inside russia. a group of mothers is demanding that putin withdraw troops from ukrainian to bring their
airports here in the area, laguardia, jfk, and newark asking passengers to come to the airport earlier than they would normally do so. they are also recommending that people reserve a parking spot, if they need one, so you can have a little bit more time. you can have less stress, you are not having to look for that parking spot as you are trying to make your way to the airport and rain has just started to fall here in laguardia airport. you may see more and more delays as the day wears on, is that the weather i started to roll into the area here, paula? >> gloria, thanks so much. all right, let's check in with nadia vermeer in atlanta. the busiest airport in the world. how are they holding up down there right now? >> yeah, paul, at the airport officials told us they would be prepared for thanksgiving holiday and it seems to be that way. steady, busy, heavy sometimes here at hartsfield, jackson.
events. tornadoes could be a level three, possible, five we could see a level four. -- i would wait a couple extra days. you might deal with this, it looks like, for the first part of the week in the deep south. >> yikes. thank you so much, tom. now is go to laguardia airport in new york. gloria, i know you've been talking to passengers there. one of the been telling you? >> well, paula, i would say it is a bit of a controlled travel chaos here, if you will. there has been a steady stream of travelers all day. i have been here since early morning and the majority of people i've spoken with have told me that they came here prepared and expecting that there might be delays. not only because there are bad weather on the horizon, but because it is the busiest travel day of the year. so, 54.6 million people expecting to travel. that is the number that traveled at least 50 miles from their home and they are making
indicative of what wind speeds we are expecting in jacksonville, savannah, charleston, bloomington. 50, 60, 70 miles per hour across these areas, bringing power lines down, trees down, rain falls across the streets, exceeding 6 to 8 inches. the storm, certainly, far from over. orlando, the reason why disney world has shut down. hurricane-force gusts, across that region, right now. it was what they've noticed, the sun coming up, that there will be felt across areas of charleston, and savannah, over the next couple of days. >> he, and posing so many dangers, and the worst is yet to come. pedram javaheri, we thank you for your forecast. let's bring in cnn's gloria palomino, live in tampa for us. thank you for joining at this hour. we know in his release these conditions overnight. what kind of damage have been seeing there? >> certainly, the rain, and the wind, has slowed down
those crews may have a hard time reaching them. not just because of dangerous conditions, but, because they, also, have been affected by the floodwaters. >> waiting for daybreak, to get that full damage assessment. gloria palomino, we thank you, indeed, for your reporting. take care, stay well. let's head back to cnn's world weather center, to our meteorologist, pedram javaheri. pedram, hurricane ian, so destructive. it is a superlative storm, in size, and strength. why is it so intense? >> the intensity here, really, ramping up in the span of 12 hours. when we saw these ocean temperatures, among the highest oceanic heat content in the atlantic ocean, advance of the storm system. the florida shelf, a shallow area, where they allow the storm system to flourish, and create monstrous storm surges that were forecast, and observed, across the area. they came ashore with 150 mile per hour winds, to give you a sense of scale of the dozens, and dozens of hurricanes,
happening. let's go to gloria palomino, live in, tampa were 100 year long -- hundred year long streak continues. but officials are warning the worst is yet to come. >> that's right, john. but people here in tampa talk about the air being somewhat lucky, because it has yet to be directly impacted by our hurricane. days ago, we thought the hurricane was going to hit hard right here in tampa. now, tampa seems to have miss the eye of the hurricane. the worst has been missed by the area here as that storm clawed its way towards the west. and here in tampa, we are seeing several thousands of people reporting power outages. more than 450,000 people remain without power at this hour. hurricane in continues to move across the entire state, causing massive destruction and flooding in the area. >> >> hurricane ian slamming
>> governor ron desantis submitted a request for a major disaster declaration for all 67 counties. which allows the federal government to send funds for cleanup. and we're nowhere near beginning the cleanup effort here in tampa, even as the hurricane was downgraded to a category 1. that still carrying 90 mile per hours winds. we've been feeling the effect of the winds here all night. in fact, we moved up here to higher ground just to get out of the way. tampa police warning people about being out on the street. we saw a couple of traffic lights crashing down onto the street. so, still very much a dangerous situation out there. and public officials asking people to stay put as hurricane ian continues its destructive path across the state, john? >> gloria, thank you. gloria pazmino live for us in tampa. you talked about those powerful
