are you prepared right now? what conditions are you preparing to experience? >> we're looking at the highest tide surge that we're looking for could be upwards of 15 agl. we convert everything to msl here. we have mean sea level storm tide poles out there so residents can get a visual on what that's actually going to look like. so basically it's not an exact science for us but we take and basically add two foot to those agl numbers the media puts out there. so that 15 agl converts to 17 as a high tide surge for us. i mean, same level and all that but at least it gives them some visual to go out and look at. but for mean when it came through in 2016 affected cedar key just to put that in perspective for people, that came in at a little over -- i think it was around 9.6 msl. and we're looking at 17 msl. and hermine tore that island up pretty good and the community of

message to them? >> well, my message to them is you know, if they stayed during hermine they didn't really have that super wind field that we're potentially seeing here. we're looking at wind speeds of potentially 115 to 125. so we're looking at upper-level cat 3. hermine when it went by was a very strong tropical storm minimal category 1 hurricane. so that's the difference that we're trying to tell these people, that you know, when you incorporate a lot more wind with it that increases those numbers. so it's real. it's happening. you know, we can deny it, we can do that. we always tell everybody to run from the surge and hide from the wind. they don't have to go far. you know, just get far enough out of that surge zone, pretty much anything on the east side of u.s. 19, moving in like that would be a safe enough to get out of the surge. >> if they don't get out of the

landfall in florida in the next few hours. nasa is releasing these images showing the sheer magnitude of the hurricane from space. idalia set to be one of the most powerful storms ever to hit that area of florida's western coast. some cities are already starting to see the early effects of the hurricane with flooding reported in pinellas county. but one of the storm's most dangerous effects won't be fully seen for hours after it makes landfall. forecasters are predicting deadly storm surges, as high as 15 feet in some areas. here is what one official told me earlier about the potential impact of idalia's storm surge. >> the closest we've ever came to a storm surge like that on our coastal communities was back with hermine. we got maybe 4, 5 foot. and we're low laying in some of our communities on the post as suwannee and horseshoe. it was devastating. we had a lot of major damage to residence and structures.

speed that came through or the water that's coming now? >> the storm surge, that's pretty -- those people out there, no wind friction loss out there. they've been seeing winds around 55, 68, you know, gusts of that nature and all that. we got a break on the hurricane-force winds. we still have stuff coming in with banding throughout the day and even as far as 6:00 p.m. when the system is all the way out in the atlantic ocean by then. the surge has always been our biggest concern with that because the topography, we're just a little south of there, cedar key, yankee town areas is like a catcher's mitt. it has no place to go other than -- these storms coming in those particular paths like hermine pretty much all worst case

soon to their homes today? >> well, that's one of the things we will evaluate looking for. obviously if homes are damaged and roads not clear we want to make sure our citizen stay in. we'll make the assessments and getting the information to the citizens in terms of what roads and power lines are down and what's available to them to move back into their homes. hopefully again we think we've dodged a bullet here in leon county. hopefully get our folks back up and running if not in the next day or so but certainly by this weekend we should be back up and running. >> dana: how does this compare to maybe the last hurricane that you all dealt with? >> well, hermine was perhaps one of the storms we dealt with most recently that came through. this one has been much like that one. we had one back in 1985, kate. that one was not a hurricane but it did a lot of damage in our

they adhered to it. we had those that were adamant they didn't want to leave in each coastal community. we do have search and rescue strike teams waiting for the recall to get done and the ability to get in there. we haven't got reports back yet of just how bad or devastating it is down there. >> and you talk about the folks in your community that decided to ride it out. nerve florida is prepared for a hurricane on some level, but your community hasn't dealt with a direct hit like this in more than 125 years. do you think your residents fully anticipated how bad it could be? >> you're right. we have not seen anything close to this magnitude in a while. the closest thing we came to any possible storm surge was back in 2016, with hermine, and that storm surge was maybe four or five foot. and so when we started prepping for this last week, and

coast of florida right now that are under hurricane warnings and at least 22 florida counties that have issued some level of evacuation orders ahead of hurricane idalia. >> joining us live to discuss is the public information officer with dixie county emergency services. so dixie county is located in the northwest part of the state in the big bend region and has issued a a mandatory evacuation. mandy, we appreciate the time. good morning. we heard from governor desantis about 30 minutes ago and he talked about big bend specifically, he said that that area hasn't really had a hurricane strike in this area in a long time. these coastal areas are not been through this before. what are you most concerned about? >> yeah, absolutely. our last incident was back in 2016 with hermine where we had seen some storm surge but nothing of this magnitude. and back then, we had some major destruction to not only homes but, you know, commercial

the message to folks who are stubborn for preparing for this storm surge. >> well, you know, here in tampa bay area, we have had a lot of near misses in terms of the storms, and this is also not forecast to be a direct hit, but what we are trying to tell people is, you know, these storms hit in different ways, and particularly with the last couple of major storms coming close, hermine and irma, and we saw the storms drain out of tampa bay and people might be used to the idea that we won't see a lot of the storm surging, but what we are trying to emphasize to people is that this storm is not like that, and the forecast has been clear if you are in those areas, you will be seeing the water rising up, and depending upon how high your house is above the ground, you will get water coming into the house at the height of the storm surge. >> josh, it is a complicated decision for people, people who
