Asian American lawmakers say State's 'assignment restrictions' discriminate

The lack of hard data is a point of confusion for lawmakers and advocates.
An official with the American Foreign Service Association said that the organization sought data in June 2020 from the State Department broken down by gender, ethnicity and other criteria to evaluate whether certain groups were suffering disproportionately, but only received some general information.
CNN reported that it had obtained a sensitive-but-unclassified 2018 letter to House lawmakers that said restrictions had affected 166 employees in 2015, 168 in 2016 and 307 in 2017.
Lieu, during a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing in March, pressed Blinken to provide data, including a breakdown of those restricted by race and ethnicity, but has yet to receive any response.

House votes to condemn Chinese government over Hong Kong

The House passed a resolution on Monday to formally condemn the Chinese government and the Hong Kong regional government for actions that "violate the rights and freedoms" of the region's citizens.
Lawmakers adopted the resolution by a 418-1 vote that calls on the Chinese government and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to release pro-democracy activists and politicians arrested under the national security law enacted last year that reduces the city's autonomy and imposes harsh punishments for protesters.
"By passing this resolution, the House sends a strong bipartisan message demanding that the Chinese and Hong Kong governments respect the will of the people of Hong Kong. We will continue to push for democracy and respect for human rights in Hong Kong. We will continue to demonstrate that we stand in solidarity with the pro-democracy figures and activists who have made tremendous sacrifices for their city and for their core human rights," said House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Gregory Meeks

EU politician calls for U.S. to sanction Russian gas pipeline

“I made the point that if the U.S. imposes sanctions they should be effective,” Sikorski said in an interview with The Hill.
U.S. sanctions on Nord Stream 2 were noticeably absent from a raft of economic actions targeting Russia that were announced by President Biden
Biden addressed his decision to hold off sanctioning the pipeline in remarks to reporters at the White House, saying it is a complicated issue affecting allies in Europe.
“I've been opposed to Nord Stream 2 for a long time, from the beginning … when I was out of office and even before office, when we — before I left office as vice president. But that still is an issue that is in play," he said.

Lawmakers to roll out legislation reorganizing State cyber office

A group of bipartisan lawmakers led by House Foreign Affairs Committee ranking member Michael McCaul
The Cyber Diplomacy Act, first introduced in 2017, would require the State Department to open a Bureau of International Cyberspace Policy. The head of the new office would be appointed by the president and given the rank of ambassador. The position would report directly to either the Secretary of State or a deputy.
The bureau would be tasked with leading the agency’s cybersecurity efforts, including through creating an international strategy to guide efforts by the United States to engage with other nations on cybersecurity issues and set norms on responsible behavior in cyberspace.
