Anthem: Hymn to Christ the Light (2018) by Zebulon M. Highben - Christ, whose glory fills the skies Christ, the true, the only Light, Sun of Righteousness, arise, triumph o’er the shades of night; dayspring from on high, be near ,daystar, in my heart appear. Dark and cheerless is the morn unaccompanied by Thee; joyless is the day’s return, till Thy mercy’s beams I see, till Thou inward light impart, glad my eyes, and warm my heart. Visit then this soul of mine, pierce the gloom of sin and grief; fill me, radiancy divine, scatter all my unbelief ; more and more Thyself display, shining to the perfect day. (Charles Wesley (1707-1788))
Reading: Philippians 4:10-13 - I rejoice in the Lord greatly that now at last you have revived your concern for me; indeed, you were concerned for me, but had no opportunity to show it. Not that I am referring to being in need; for I have learned to be content with whatever I have. I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
Sermon: “Who told you…..?” by Dr. John Mack

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
Choral Response: Light of the World, Come Down by Shawn Kirchner (b. 1970) Light of the World, into our darkness come. Let Heaven’s will on earth be done.

Voluntary: Toccata on “Great Day” by Adolphus Hailstork (b. 1941)

Black History Month Music Series: In February, the Chapel Choir features music by Black composers in various genres. Our goal is to venture off the well-worn path of choral arrangements of traditional spirituals into a more complex musical world. We recognize that Black history is far more expansive and vibrant than the centuries of slavery and oppression in the United States. Black history is rich and varied, spans the globe over millennia, and has stories to tell of joy and liberation, not just struggle. This month we will share some of these stories, and we recommit to our goal of including historically marginalized composers throughout the year.
About today’s featured composers and arrangers: “Ukholo l’wami/iSabata” is a medley based on popular hymns from the Zulu and Sotho tribes of South Africa. Arrangers Michael Barrett and Mpumelelo Manyathi work closely with each other at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, where Barrett is Director of Choral Activities and Manyathi is a student. Barrett writes: “Towards the end of 2018, Mpumelelo approached me with his desire to arrange traditional South African music, and we decided to work on two medleys together. Working with Mpumelelo was such a wonderful experience for me, and I am convinced a new voice for traditional South African music arrangements has been born. I am thankful to Mpumelelo for his knowledge and passion of our craft.” In 2019, Barrett appointed Manyathi as Cultural Advisor and Composer-in-Residence of the university’s internationally-renowned ensemble, the Tuks Camerata.
