Letters to the editor address the push to change the names of Savannah squares named after slave holders

Compiled by Adam Van Brimmer
Squares names: Learn from history, don't erase it
A news story published Feb. 7 and headlined “Name changes sought for two city squares” caught my eye. As a tour guide, my job is to present the facts.
It is well documented that many early Savannah citizens were active in the slave trade — the Telfairs and James Habersham among them. My question is this: What guidelines will the city use to determine which squares should be renamed? How about streets or even counties named after slave traders? Where do we draw the line?
The article mentions “Jubilee Freedom Day” and William T. Sherman. Even Sherman was not an ardent opponent of slavery. Under the command of his officers, the tragic deaths of hundreds of innocent men, women and children took place at Ebenezer Creek in what is now Effingham County. None of the officers were reprimanded. Many were promoted or went on to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives or the Senate.
