joining me now to discuss is phil, robert deputy national editor of the washington post and national editor and coauthor of very stable genius and i, alone, can fix. it filled, thinks for being with us. trump has had a pretty standard response to all of these charges. attacking prosecutors, claiming that it's all political, do you think charges on election interference specifically both from the doj and in georgia will illicit the same kind of response? or will there be something different here? when >> you know, i fully expect that any potential charges to come either federally on the january 6th investigation, or in georgia, in that investigation into the efforts to overturn the 2020 election, that they would just illicit the same kind of response from former president, trump. this is a very familiar playbook that he has had over the years. he has faced criminal liability, including in more recent indictments where he just uses its charge against, him every

let's start with even before the indictment. this investigation was conducted in washington, d.c. but then prosecutors brought the actual case down in florida. what was your reaction to that? >> yeah, i was quite surprised by that decision. you know, obviously a venue consideration is important. venue means that the prosecutors will look to bring the case in the geographic area where the conduct principally occurred. and so here the unlawful retention has been charged obviously occurred in florida. so there was certainly grounds to bring the venue there. but the whole grand jury investigation was conduct friday d.c. certainly there were justifiable reasons to bring the indictment in d.c. and everything looked like it was going to be in d.c. and frankly, as a line prosecutor myself, i would be inclined to continue to pursue the indictment in d.c. even if on the face of it looked like

>> you're in the cnn newsroom. the new charges former president trump faces in the classified documents investigation don't seem to be changing his campaign strategy. trump took the stage at a major republican gathering in iowa last night as a clea runner for his party's nomination. this was the closest he ncame t referencing his legal jeopardy. >> they have weaponized the fbi. if i weren't running, i would have nobodiment coing after me. or if i was losing by a lot, i would have nobody coming after me. >> the documents case is not the only hurdle ahead for trump. barricades are up in atlanta. police are boefing up security ahead of a possible indictment in the 2020 election interference investigation. and in washington, law enforcement agencies are working on a coordinated response should trump be indicted in the january 6th investigation. let's bring in national security reporter zachary cohen. explain the superseding

iran military plan and it was a classified document that prosecutors say he now faces another criminal charge over. >> and additionally now, multiple sources are telling cnn that law enforcement officials believe an indictment in the special counsel's january 6th investigation could come down at any time, perhaps next week. what more do you know? >> reporter: fred, law enforcement officials have been waiting for official record from the justice department and from the special counsel's office on a potential indictment announcement related to this investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 election and the events around january 6th. there has not been an official word of any sort of timing or timeline for an indictment announcement, but law enforcement is preparing accordingly and believe that an indictment could come any time in the next week. so law enforcement officials clearly expecting and planning for this to happen sometime in the near term. >> zachary cohen, thank you so much.

matters close to an election because it could impact an election. that doesn't mean an investigation has to stop. here it's already overt. the cat's out of the bag. >> a trial feels pretty overt. >> it is overt. the case itself is already overt. >> you think they would pull the guy off the campaign trail. >> i don't think so. that's probably not the case. if the trial has started, i don't think they're going to stop the trial. the judge would have something to say about that. so i think it's -- again, we're in uncharted waters here. >> so unchartsed. you're all i've got. i don't know -- >> it is fun to think about. and i think that they're going to be some interesting motions that we haven't seen. not just venue motions and things of that nature, but you know, the impact on whether he can get a fair jury pool when we're talking about maybe a presidential candidate against another presidential candidate, the department of justice. that's never been done before. >> ed, thank you so much for joining us. and thank you to the control room for indulging all my

to do this episode. you have done so much reporting on this. you've been following this more closely than anyone. what should people be looking for this weekend? >> well, thank you for that. i think what we did in this documentary is really dove into not just the obvious parts -- everyone knows about donald trump calling brad raffensperger, pressuring him to find the votes. a lot of people also know about rudy giuliani showing up, talking to georgia state lawmakers and spreading a number of conspiracy theories. but people have heard less i think about this voting machine breach in coffey county, georgia. we dive into that. we dive into wild moments where people are just showing up to try to pressure election workers to confess that they participated in fraud, they didn't participate in -- people you would not expect like kanye west's former publicist. it gives an indication of how sprawling this investigation is and just how wild the events were that were unfolding in georgia around the 2020 election. >> wild indeed. and former president trump just weighing in on his social media account saying that he expects to be indicted in both the

have had similar meetings with the justice department to try to prevent it from going forward with an eventual charge. >> then because of what you just said, if there is a release of indictments in the coming weeks, would it be everyone, all of those involved at once? >> it's very hard to say. so, again, as we've seen -- which is a very different investigation. i just can't emphasize enough how different the classified documents case is from the january 6th case, because that one really just involved so many different moving parts in terms of pressure that was placed on election officials, state legislators, the involvement of the former president's lawyers. so there just is so much more involved in the complexity of that january 6th investigation. i don't know that we would see all of the charges all at once,
