interests? did the trump lawyer who allegedly tried to influence cassidy hutchinson's testimony ever face any consequences for that? what can special counsel jack smith investigators learned potentially from the january 6th investigation in congress, when they went up against this kind of potential witness tampering before. luckily, we have just the person to ask about that. joining us now is tim haiti, he's the former lead investigator for the congressional investigation into january 6th. mr. hayfield, thanks for being with us. >> thanks for the invitation, rachel. >> i just wanted to ask you about this hanging thread from the january 6th investigation which does feel like it's got some residents with what's going on right now. i know the investigation made criminal referrals for trump, also for john eastman that encouraged associations to look further in some of the lawyers involved in this case, including the lawyer representing cassidy hutchinson. i know he sued the committee for suggesting that he tried to wrongly influence his climb. can you just tell us, sort of,
into court and file that one again. trump also just had his laugh out loud defamation suit against cnn thrown out of court. and just today in georgia a fulton county judge almost literally laughed off trump's attempt to have the election flrtference investigation there derailed before he's even indicted. the judge's order referenced rumple stiltskin. millions of dollars in legal fees well spent. the other question is what it means for the various investigations surrounding it, that he's paying the legal bills of his codefendants and some witnesses and potential codefendants and witnesses in some of these cases. i say this is an issue because we've seen him do it before to troubling effect. one of the things sort of left hanging from the january 6th investigation in congress is a potential witness tampering incident that the investigation
indictment watch kicks into full gear. fulton county's district attorney likely a week or two away from presenting her case to a grand jury and announcing whether trump will be charged for trying to overturn the 2020 election results in that state. ramped up security measures are already in place around the local courthouse and a county judge just rejected efforts by trump's legal team to toss evidence in that criminal investigation and to disqualify the district attorney. >> some people may not be happy with the decisions that i am making. sometimes when people are unhappy, they act in a way that could create harm. the work is accomplished. we have been working for two and a half years. >> reporter: double trump's legal bills are mounting so much so that sources told our kristen holmes that his team is now creating a legal defense fund to help offset some of the costs. up to this point, it's been trump's political action committee save america that has been fronting those costs. already spending more than $40 million just this year to pay for the legal fees for trump and
charge to the table to plead. >> yeah. now, i want to switch to there's a lot of jurisdictions here, but i want to switch to a state investigation in georgia tied . fulton county judge rejected challenge from trump's legal team to stop the investigation. writing in part, i want to read this here, while being the subject or target of highly publicized criminal investigation is likely unwelcome and unpleasant experience, no court ever has held that status alone provides a basis for the courts to interfere with or halt the investigation. what do you make of the judge's reaction there? really didn't seem to leave any daylight for interpretation. >> yeah. i think the judge was trying to let the world know that we live in a world, at least in the united states for the time being, where the rule of law trumps the individual personality of an individual who happened to have been the former president of the united states when he was alleged to have committed crimes. and we're going to move forward
letter, there are signs all along that yucil taveras having received that target letter and seen the initial indictment against trump and walt nauta decided he had what to provide to prosecutors. we do know he's an extremely valuable witness without whom the details then superseding indictment would not have been known. >> and nauta continues to follow the former president around the country for his campaign. but, lisa, you know, there's a lot of speculation that today could be the day for the indictment of donald trump in what has been short-handed as the january 6th investigation, which of course includes all his actions after the 2020 election, and we should note we don't know for sure it's today or it would come this week, but as soon as that target letter was sent, the clock started ticking. walk us through what today would look like for this grand jury in
exposed. the committee's star witness, cassidy hutchinson, you may remember she got a phone call ahead of her deposition with the january 6th investigation, and in that phone call she was told trump's chief of staff knew she was loyal and that she would do the right thing. investigators later released testimony from her in which she described how her trump funded lawyer had attempted to shape her testimony and limit what she was willing to tell the january 6th investigation. cassidy hutchinson says that trump funded lawyer told her, quote, the less you remember, the better. eventually cassidy hutchinson got herself a new lawyer who wasn't on trump's payroll or on the payroll of his campaign, but that allegation about a trump funded lawyer trying to influence the testimony of his purported client now seems quite relevant again. there are now two trump employees charged along with their boss in the classified documents case, the federal criminal case in florida. lawyers for both those men are
the fees. if i were in that situation, i would want to ensure that my lawyer was looking out for me, was acting in my best interest, was not sharing information or giving me advice motivated by anything other than what is in my best advice. so, anyone who needs legal advice, legal assistance of any kind needs to be clear that the duty of loyalty is given to them and those individuals who are accepting the generosity of the legal fees ought to be asking, hey, is this lawyer really they're looking out for me and only me? or is there some other agenda? >> very clarifying. tim heaphy, former lead investigation for the investigation into january 6th. heaphy, it is something that can sound technical and distance, but when you zero in on it, it's clear, and a little alarming. thanks for your time tonight, sir. >> thanks, rachel. >> we'll be right back. stay with us.

paula, what are you hearing? >> reporter: so, we know that the grand jury that has been hearing evidence in the special counsel's investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 election, they have been seen leaving the building, but one important person stayed behind and that is the grand juror foreperson. that is significant, because that is the only member of the grand jury that is needed to return an indictment. now, at this point it's unclear if they have voted to indict the former president, or anyone else in this investigation, but one of the reasons we're watching their movement so closely today is because of what we've seen over the past two weeks. we know the former president has received a target letter informing him he is a target in this investigation. he received an invitation to appear before the grand jury which he declined and, brianna, that is usually something that comes at the end of an investigation. and also another sign that an indictment was imminent, his defense attorneys met with jack smith and his team last week, sources tell cnn they did not think they would be able to
