a constant with republicans it seems. why is it always feeling like we are on the defensive and we have fractures in our caucus? democrats are always united sitting back eating popcorn, republicans are battling with each other. this isn't how it's supposed to be. joining me now is victor davis hns senior fellow and char live hurt washington times editor and fox news contributor. victor i always love hearing your take, it does often feel like we're to defensive but i don't think this moment will define an election, i think we'll get through this just fine but what are your thoughts. >> well, i mean, republicans, they're going over the cliff and they're arguing but how did we speed toward the cliff? i mean, the republican party, we've lost 7 out of the last 8 popular votes. and we haven't won 51% of a presidential election since 1988. and this is at a time when we've won 1400 seats, local and state, under the obama administration.
and then to get furious and go crazy because we have the democrats carry that legacy. and the bush administration, the obama administration, the trump administration and now biden is outdoing them all, but republicans have to, at some point, say we are going to be fiscally responsible when we have all control of government and i hope we will do that in 2024. >> i certainly hope so. i mean the future of our country depends on it charlie. >> it does. >> i do wonder, you know, and you mentioned this actually earlier about the culture wars, they call them the culture wars but i feel like this debt limit debate distracts from some of the bigger things going on in our country charlie, transitioning kids at a young age, pornography in kindergarten classrooms the school shootings we see across the country, these are things republicans should be talking about not fighting battles we can't win if we don't have united government, we just can't win them. >> yeah. well, of course, there's no

control, one half of one-third of government. and yet here we are with the largest ever spending reduction in american history. kayleigh, i have to say this you and i have seen plenty of debt ceiling deals in the past. did republicans ever get anything for those? even when we had unified control over the white house, the senate and the house, did we ever get a deal this good? cutting deals like this are not easy. we've managed to do it. and, i get it, the white house is going to put a happy face on it, but you are going to see the vast majority of republicans vote for this deal tomorrow. i'm going to vote for $2 trillion in cuts, i don't know what byron and championship are going to vote for. >> okay, but you do also, i want to point out the progressive caucus, jayapal was on a press call and said she had a very good conversation about this deal, makes some changes you can see as positive. they won't be upset if a majority of democrats support this. so how can this be conservative
