But we're so in the reason of saying those were so independent as a family every. Day and we were really into our cause Yeah so it's not environmentally friendly but I think that's just stuck with me and my dad was essentially a trust traveling salesman as well so I think maybe that's in me as well I think right you know I'm earning my my bucks by yeah driving around the U.K. There's something nice about hitting the road when you hit the road then if you're listening to music or you just get Yeah yeah quite often and I'm doing work stuff so I've just I've got a musical drama that I've been working on and we've just done a radio play version of it kind of for ourselves. To test it out so I had to listen to that so that was great. And then I could call my friend to another friend and he's in America so you know the kind of and then I do listen to music but I think that you shouldn't radio you can be calling a friend in the States it's the future no it's what he knows whenever I call him I'm always in my car I just can't I still can't get over Bluetooth Yeah that blows my mind and Face Time just I I always almost want to faint with excitement with Face Time this is like it's like Jane. BOND It is although I'm less and a friend of mine son has just left to go to spend 6 months travelling around the world and within 24 hours there were Face Time in the family's face time I thought years ago when I went travelling that I didn't even send a postcard for 3 pence didn't know any I was there was hitchhiking doing all sorts of terrible things yeah I think that's important Yeah I did the same I think that's important I don't want to get you can oh you know I my phone broke last week it wasn't a good. Technology you know for me and my phone broke and it was just wonderful oh my god it was great I didn't miss it yeah no I'm sure I'm sure so tell us so much has been going on and continue to to go on because you were busy during the summer getting here and then you got this big. Yes I mean you sound very camera obviously a huge title but just. Because you've been up there left to drive but how do you how do you sort of maintain and they quit Librium with all of us who are I love it so that really helps if I didn't love it and I think I find it quite stressful. I've been looking forward to this tour because I was writing the album it was in the meant to be an album ready for for the talk. So I love the people I work with and it's more excitement pulls me through the things that get me nervous normally one off cakes one of the light. The Jubilee or the Diana memorial concert or. You know Live Aid those things are terrifying because there's just one child Yeah and I'm not around my team and there's also people on the bill and I don't want to be bad those are terrifying but the tour they're my family now we're all a family. And it is just going to be brilliant you know I'm very excited about that there's some really cool creative stuff that I'm doing which I think will be quite fun stage of yeah on stage and I'll always like doing stuff that's kind of slightly tongue in cheek you know it's not doing a disservice to the you know because the music has to be taken seriously but you know there's got to be a bit of a laugh there as well so I think I quite like the opening is something I've wanted to do for a while ha yeah it's almost an illusion of right here you know we're not David Copperfield territory are we no I don't think so anyway. It was so great to get out and see all these different places you know I don't know if I would have I mean I was always come to Scotland but I don't know if I would have gone to see some of these places if it wasn't for music here and you get a snapshot and I would always make a point of trying to get out and do something you know and it's like find a yoga class or go to a cafe or yeah I'm going to do some teaching one of them to kind of teaching I do songwriting and sort of in this sort of a master class kind of thing. For veterans and you know and and I like it I really enjoy it and then they come and see this show that's great because one imagines how easy it would be to be in a bubble and you'd always do you are right now you're referring to your team and the Seems to me to be a link from as you say that's of democracy of the vote with Pop Idol and full credit into your music evidently where earlier on almost being the record company so imagine having that support networks almost sounds like an extended family it's like an extended family and I really do like I love the teaching because that reminds me of what I do you know because when you learn something on the job. I can you can one can forget everything you know you know and it really helps me like teaching is a 2 way process and it really helps me. And I had like friends of mine that started doing water polo and things like that and also there's a lot of grey L G B T sports teams like rugby and I thought about playing rugby again but it's just difficult to get the time out and if I have course it is and we don't want it messing up you face this rugby either well anything else again yeah injuries and think of Algy bt thing I mean you've been a prominent campaigner and tell us about the podcast Well I was I finished it now unfortunately because it just got so busy but my friend Chris so I was thinking of my friends or Sweeney he's continuing it which is great because I think it's got this brilliant space and we've got a wonderful audience. And we just started I mean Chris I dared to say you know I think let's try to try and you like Israel G.B.T. Women's Hour I thought fantastic was a kind of remit and then we started and it just got very very successful and popular and. And and we've interviewed some great people and it's really it's really been a big. Part of my life and I still really interested in kind of interviewing people and talking to people and it's led me to write this book called How to be a gay man you know in I don't know it's given me a lot of opportunities that I never expected and I didn't even know what polka's was honestly I used to call and I polled Yeah Chris said you have to stop calling it now we're going into a sponsorship me to a site OK Just just don't let me talk but I will just smile and nod and the people are looking for president can still find a homo sapiens Yeah there was a pair I think I think I think there will be I mean Chris is so busy I think he's just finished directing something else is a filmmaker he's a filmmaker to write as I don't know how he finds the time. Came to live in admin from Russia 5 years ago and fell in love with the community and the people of Leith Walk that is all is a vibrant collection of Leith Walk pictures and we're told the afternoon show is Katrina rose high also began I moved to Edinburgh from St Petersburg as I'm originally from Russia I was leaving. This a dissenter but then and to be honest with you Leith was a bit of a grey area for me but I want to move to leave and I started to exploring that area I begin to appreciate its beauty and diversity its bursting with energy and Lee Thorpe is probably my favorite attribute now and the whole of the K. I like people that to walk up and down the street I'm just amazed by the light by the textures of the buildings but I think people is him most important thing that drove me to this project so what was the response from the people you wanted to photograph I was absolutely overwhelmed by the willingness of people to be photographed by the Friends of nice of people and how open they are surprisingly very few people say no and to which is quite surprising because I would probably say no if someone approached me on the street with a scary camera does having that camera make it easier for you to approach the people to talk to them yeah we like the quote by Dan our boss a famous photographer she said that camera gives you some sort of a license a permission let's put it this way Imagine if I approached someone without a camera people might think you're crazy why would they tell anything about their lives whereas if you had a camera magically it gives you something some sort of permission and people are willing to chat with you and tell about themselves. So is this quite a spontaneous thing that you do you or do you plan. I don't really plan I'm a person of improvisation let's say whenever I see someone interesting and instant character when I walk up and down the street I just approach a person and I ask of the would be king to participate in this project. However I try to achieve a certain consistency across my set of photographs I like when a subject maintains an eye contact with me and also when they placed right in the middle of a shot I think it really helps to achieve consistency across the serious of the walk I'm actually from Leith myself so I loved looking at your 4th was because for me well thank you so much is looking our home and it is a case of you see someone yeah you want to take their photo or you see the location right OK how do you piece it together so how do you say it's not planned you see it but yeah and he's so how does that come to be a truly hard to describe I guess it depends on the context it depends on the particular situation it could be a vibrant Koloff of the people where it could be of the light could be hard people who walk if you pardon the pun could be how people just having a cigarette having a break you know a lot of business owners work on the Leith Walk straight that it's hard to describe but just some something in there I guess. So photography isn't your job it's your whole being a passion of yours so how did you 1st get interested in photography Yeah I'm not really interested in photography I mean that photography is just a medium or just a way of telling a visual story I'm not interested in cameras and technical stuff like aperture or shutter it's very boring I mean just the people in the 1st place and photography just a way of communicating with people if I wasn't a photographer I would be a painter or a writer for The if is just a just a medium but you actually you shoot on film which despite being a bit more expensive has such a lovely end result so what do you like about using film. I like that when the shoot on the film I don't know what I'm going to get it's a surprise sort of thing to me and this allows me to concentrate more on the process and on the my subject because I don't see the daughter to way and when I get the show developed and scant it's always a surprise as kind of Christmas for me and like not having Christmas every month a bit she you know film is actually a bit of a dying art So what are the advantages over digital I'm not sure if it's dying to bring it with you because we are on the radio right and television didn't kill the radio right it was still on the radio and people should film still shoot a film and people still listening to vinyl music I think that actually film photography experiencing a new way for a pill or to you just now more and more people start to become cameras from their grand fathers and mothers and start to shoot which is amazing but I think of course there are cases when a film is not very suitable a commercial photographer or a news photographer when you need to get stuff out of very very quickly and you don't have that freedom but I think for fine art film photography is perfectly suitable and what I like about film is that the subjects appear to be more authentic. And pictures of film they have more depth within them and that's what I like but for you digital has provided this wonderful platform for you to share your work and that's actually where we can see your work right now is online on social media would you love to bring that to an exhibition space perhaps somewhere in Leith absolutely if someone is listening and would like to make a proposal you can follow me on Instagram as Celia ill for you've created this wonderful collection of people and places on Leith Walk that you obviously have grown quite attached to do you have any plans to create another collection of photographs from a different or in time yeah I recently discovered that there is a leaf Wark street in Baltimore Maryland in the US So probably I should make a project about Leith Walk in every corner of the world But jokes aside I'm really interested in to commenting Britain and Scotland and the U.K. As a whole and a number of. People leave I don't know what's my next project going to be but it's going to be shot in the U.K. You said earlier photography kind of like a hobby for you but more just the image taking rather than all the little details that come from those who are really interested in photography but there are good photographers that you you know whose work that you admire Absolutely I probably mention Martin bar which is my favorite photographer as well as Neal my German a contemporary Scottish photographer amazing portraits Margaret Mitchell That's going to photographer and Laura panick English photographer very very nice when it comes to Russian photography highlight all of an hour and on the ground ski. I should primarily landscapes moving here and meeting people through this medium what hospital Crito you about moving here to another country I would have charted with so many people if I hadn't the camera with me so your photography has probably allowed me to connect with a lot of people living in Edinburgh and in Leith and really thankful for this opportunity because of course people they're missing they're very friendly and very open Have you tried this kind of project in many other places. Of questions because there are so many unanswered questions and The Handmaid's Tale but even more so in the series which after the farce series the 2 mercies which are way off beyond the normal although it would have proved an op and. So this to me was a way of our. Almost write a script for a series in the sense that is full of all the things that the 1st one doesn't can sound self-worth it's about as good as you know was buying thrill rate is very plot driven rather than college to drive and some of the dialogue as cheesy and Kana it's always a go Hollywood action movie some of the really standard stuff that dialogue command and that are cliffhanger some plot to as it's an all of these things is quite exciting but I agree that rating is labas can daily kit and it's more about feeling accountable to readers and to T.V. Viewers and feel everyone asked to have an answer cos that's so interesting US isn't it the influence of television as both of you are emphasizing that those make it tells a little bit I mean we're not wanting spoilers as you both say it's absent questions from from from viewers to set in stone and leaders so it tells a little bit about the structure of the main characters here sure well basically it's called the testaments and it's written in the form of the testaments of 3 individuals the most important being on Lydia who is a big character in The Handmaid's Tale a very severe frightening individual and she's actually writing probably on pain of death if it ever gets far and about what she's doing to undermine Gilliatt basically to bring down the regime and the 2 other narrators are young women and one of them is The Handmaid's own daughter the original handmaids daughter Nicole although she's called these even the 1st meter and doesn't know anything about her own background she's born in the free country of Canada and the other character is a young woman from within Gilliatt who refuses to get married in there for trains to become another aunt and has been brainwashed in the process and these are 2 very young women's voices who simply do not match on Lydia's voice who for if I dare say it is much more like writing as herself you know very current for witty acerbic delights and. The shoes which I were to herself doesn't do but that's a trademark of on Lydia and she just loves and I think that can be sort of trite but actually underneath she is a very powerful and very clever individual and this is the other aspects of things Jane because as well as the television series creating its own sort of you know and hype around the and the sequel The fact is you know when Trump came to power 16 this was it became even more of a phenomenon then because it's almost like you know we were entering into this some would see it as a real dystopia Well absolutely and Margaret Atwood has said that very clearly that she felt the influence of charm and she felt also at a different way the employments of me to one obviously Boyd are very much but focused very under very similar themes as she had which is about who has ownership of the female body why is motherly sure so cruel to women and compared to men in so many different ways all the way through life these things come up time to time again the idea even just of that all phrase is the name of somebody who is or all the.
