happens in next five to six weeks. we're not worried about this making a u.s. impact. it's going to make things rough around the coast. but then yesterday a new storm formed, tropical storm dorian, 40-mile-per-hour storm at this point. take a look at this. at least the official forecast from the national hurricane center brings this up to hurricane status sometimes around wednesday being close to puerto rico. puerto rico still recovering from a hurricane a year and a half ago and now we have a storm potentially around that area. most of the models are not break this into a major storm at this point but something nonetheless we're going to watch. the lower 48, showers across parts of florida and heavier moisture across the areas of louisiana today. take a look at this big line of storms across the central prains. another big storm there. some severe weather with that.
been a steady melting of arctic sea ice at a rate of 13% per decade. as the ice melts and the footprint of the polar icecap shrinks, more of the ocean's surface is exposed and thus more heat escapes into the atmosphere. studies show that the arctic is warming faster than any other part of the globe. the authors of a new study have koor lated the increase of ice melt over time with more frequent polar vortex disruption. that dam way up north bursts and thrusts cold air down south to us. one of the study's author told us he believes this will continue and even become more frequent in the future. and one more bit of bad news. as this cold, arctic air hits the lower 48, did displaces air north warmer than normal temperatures have been recorded in alaska where the permafrost

across the west, california, colorado, utah better said, not getting any snow at all. the pattern very dry out across the west. we have more snow as you just saw mike in the chicago area. this is going to eventually bring more snow about erie, the great lakes once the storm moves through. the winds will kickback in the direction for more lake-effect snow. another 8-10 inches by the weekend in erie, pennsylvania. it's cold. maybe a bit better than yesterday. we're just going to continue to watch these bouts of this cold air that you see here, the dark color. the arctic air that will continue to infiltrate the lower 48 the next number of days. almost probably the better part of two weeks. so here's what it feels like across the country right now. feels great in florida. great in arizona and southern california, new mexico. here we are now. the pink color, the very cold air mass. generally you like to see it across parts of the north pole.

launch of a ballistic missile out of north korea. i want to go right to our pentagon correspondent, hans nichols. what do we know about this launch? >> we know that it was an intercontinental ballistic missile. we knew how long it flew. it flew for about 45 minutes. and how far it traveled. about 1,000 kilometers. the scary part about all of this, when you tease that out, because basically they shot this missile straight up into the air, then it landed. when you tease it out and you give it a theoretical range, we'll see just how far and what it could potentially reach. potentially, the lower 48. now, i say that, because the last missile launch that we had from north korea, the july 4th one, flew for 37 minutes. it flew also a distance of about 930 kilometers. when you do all of the telemetry, you do all of the analysis, you get a much greater distance. the longer these missiles stay aloft, the more likely it is they can reach the continental united states. just a quick background on this. u.s. intelligence assessment is now that north korea can marry a
