Beth Shriever claims BMX gold on mixed day for Britain

Scott, who claimed gold in the 4x200m freestyle relay and silver in the individual version earlier this week, powered home after turning in fifth place heading into the final freestyle leg but finished just 0.28 seconds behind China’s Wang Shun.
Agonisingly, it was Scott’s fourth Olympic silver medal, following two claimed in relays in Rio in 2016, and the frustration appeared to show on the 24-year-old Scot as he turned away from the scoreboard after learning his fate.
Earlier, Luke Greenbank took bronze in the 200m backstroke behind the Russian Olympic Committee’s Evgeny Rylov and Ryan Murphy of the US, adding to Britain’s Friday medal haul alongside Kye White, who took silver in men’s BMX racing.

Niek Kimmann kicked off his second Olympics by colliding with a race steward who had wandered onto the track during training.
The Dutch rider spent the next three days doing everything he could to rehabilitate a knee injured in the crash, not knowing if he could be able to make it to the starting gate.
Kimmann was eventually cleared to ride and not even a sore knee could slow him down.
Kimmann shook off the freak accident to give the Netherlands its first gold medal in BMX racing, edging Kye Whyte of Britain at the finish line Friday at the Tokyo Olympics.

Beth Shriever claims BMX gold after long and bumpy ride

A long and arduous journey on and off the track ended in jubilation as Beth Shriever won Britain’s first BMX gold medal at the Olympic Games on Friday.
A succession of injuries, the withdrawal of UK Sport funding, a cancelled “holiday of a lifetime” for her family and the trials of training in lockdown were all erased as the 22-year-old, from Leytonstone, east London, won her race in Tokyo.
After even more tension during a 45-minute rain delay before the semi-final, Shriever held off defending champion Mariana Pajon, of Colombia, in a desperate finish in the final to take the gold.
